CHARLESTON, S.C. — Kareem Kashif Jefferson, 34, of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison following his conviction for being a felon in possession of firearms and for possession with intent to distribute marijuana, eutylone, and crack cocaine.
On February 14, 2020, a Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office deputy, while on patrol around 11 p.m., stopped to assist Jefferson, who appeared stranded beside the road with a vehicle sporting two flat tires. The deputy detected alcohol and marijuana odors and observed signs of impairment in Jefferson, such as slurred speech and difficulties with operating a vehicle jack. An open container of alcohol was also seen inside the vehicle. Jefferson, instructed by the deputy not to drive, attempted to leave and was seen manipulating a handgun in his pocket. He then discarded a 9mm pistol.
Upon his arrest, deputies retrieved the discarded gun and found additional firearms in the vehicle, along with 223 grams of marijuana and a small amount of crack cocaine. Jefferson’s prior felony convictions prohibit him from carrying a gun.
United States District Judge Richard M. Gergel sentenced Jefferson to 168 months of imprisonment, followed by six years of court-ordered supervision. The federal system does not allow for parole.
