OCEAN COUNTY, N.J. — Satellite images released by NASA reveal the devastating impact of the Jones Road Fire in New Jersey, where more than 15,000 acres of forest have been scorched, leaving a charred scar visible from outer space.
The wildfire, which ignited earlier this week in Ocean and Lacey Townships, has burned 15,300 acres and was reported at 65% containment as of Friday morning, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.
Damage assessment underway
Officials confirmed that one commercial building was destroyed along with multiple outbuildings and vehicles. A full damage assessment is currently underway to determine the extent of property losses.
The New Jersey Forest Fire Service continues to patrol the area to prevent flare-ups as containment efforts proceed. Authorities said four structures are still threatened by the fire’s perimeter.
Wildfire season challenges
The Jones Road Fire highlights the challenges New Jersey faces during peak wildfire season, as a combination of dry weather, winds, and flammable vegetation create hazardous conditions.
Officials are urging residents to remain alert and to avoid areas near the fire perimeter while firefighting operations continue.
