New Jersey Man Receives 15-Year Sentence for Double Vehicular Homicide in New Jersey

Prison

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, NJ – Amitoj Oberoi was sentenced to 15 years in state prison on Wednesday for two counts of first degree vehicular homicide following a deadly crash last year.

Oberoi is required to serve at least 85% of his sentence under the No Early Release Act, making him ineligible for parole during that time.

The sentencing by Judge Jonathan W. Romankow also included a penalty for a motor vehicle offense of driving while intoxicated. This decision follows a crash on August 27, 2023, which occurred at approximately 6:22 AM on Route 27 in Franklin Township.

The crash resulted in the deaths of Carlos Perez-Gaytan and Victor Cabrera-Francisco, who were passengers in Oberoi’s vehicle. The legal proceedings were handled by Assistant Prosecutor John R. Ascione.

Investigations into the crash were conducted by multiple agencies, including the Franklin Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office’s Major Crimes and Collision Analysis Reconstruction Teams.

This comprehensive investigation played a key role in the subsequent prosecution and conviction of Oberoi.
