TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey is under heightened fire risk as dry weather and strong winds have led to Stage 3 Fire Restrictions across the state. State officials are urging residents to take precautions to prevent wildfires, which can spread rapidly in the current conditions.

Under the restrictions, all outdoor fires are prohibited unless contained in an elevated stove using propane, natural gas, or electricity. Bonfires, residential fire pits, and any fires using wood or charcoal are strictly banned. Fireworks displays and the use of kerosene or gas torches are also prohibited during this restriction level.

“These precautions are necessary to prevent potential wildfires,” officials stated, urging residents to exercise caution. The restrictions apply to both public lands and private properties in all municipalities across New Jersey.

Authorities are advising residents to take additional steps to minimize fire risks:

Dispose of smoking materials responsibly: Avoid discarding cigarettes, matches, or other smoking materials on the ground, as these can easily ignite dry grass and leaves.
Use indoor fireplaces carefully: Indoor wood stoves and fireplaces should be managed cautiously, as embers can spark fires. Ensure ashes are fully extinguished with water before disposal.
Avoid dragging trailer chains: If you’re towing a trailer, make sure no chains are dragging on the ground. Sparks from dragging metal can ignite vegetation along the roadside.
Be mindful of vehicle exhaust: Avoid parking or driving over dry grass, as hot exhaust systems can start fires if they come into contact with dry vegetation.
Exercise caution with yard equipment: Lawn mowers, chainsaws, and other power tools can emit sparks. When using them, make sure they are kept away from dry grass or leaves.

Residents are also encouraged to educate children about fire safety and to keep matches and lighters out of reach.

With the fire risk expected to remain elevated, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection urges all residents to remain vigilant and follow the restrictions.
