New Jersey Rite Aid Pharmacists Can Now Prescribe Hormonal Contraceptives

TRENTON, N.J. — Rite Aid pharmacists in New Jersey now have the authority to prescribe hormonal contraceptives, expanding access to reproductive healthcare in line with state regulations, the company announced.

Customers can receive prescribed contraceptives after a private in-person consultation with a trained pharmacist. New Jersey joins nine other states—California, Idaho, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New York, Oregon, Virginia, and Vermont—where Rite Aid pharmacists can provide this service.

“Empowering pharmacists to provide safe, convenient, and timely contraceptive care is a crucial step in expanding access to essential healthcare services,” said Summer Williams Kerley, Rite Aid’s Group Vice President of Pharmacy Growth and Clinical Programs.

Pharmacists must complete an internal Board of Pharmacy-approved and ACPE-accredited training program to qualify for prescribing authority. The program includes screening, counseling, dispensing, and documentation requirements.

Customers aged 18 and older can schedule consultations online or in-store, with walk-ins also accepted.
