TOMS RIVER, NJ – It has been empty for quite some time, but that’s about to change. Months after the nearby abandoned Perkins Restaurant was taken over by Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, another ice cream joint is moving in right next door.
That’s right, two ice cream and shake places competing side by side. That’s business, as they say. The location is right across the street from Toms River’s Hamburger Highway. That stretch of Route 37 includes Checkers, White Castle, McDonald’s and Burger King on one side and Burger 25 nearby.
The new ice cream shop is straight out of Brooklyn.
According to the company, “In the 1940s, Angelina D’Esposito made a living selling ice cream on Coney Island, a booming amusement park on the southern tip of Brooklyn.”
It is none other than Coney Waffles, a famous stop on the Coney Island Boardwalk.
“D’Esposito tucked the ice cream into freshly made Coney Waffles, a handheld confection customers could enjoy while they walked. Seven decades later, her grandson has brought this treat to the world,” the company states. “Coney Waffle opened in Belmar, NJ in 2016 followed by locations in Asbury Park, Long Branch, Red Bank, and Brooklyn. Coney Waffle specializes in over-the-top desserts, coney waffles, cups, cones, milkshakes, brownie waffles, as well as original ice cream cakes, fudge, candy, and other complimentary products.”

No information yet about when Coney Waffles is opening, but we can’t wait…and Freddies probably can.
