Brooklyn, NY – A 92-year-old man was tricked into handing over $10,000 in cash to a scammer posing as an Amazon representative during a brazen daylight con in Prospect Heights, police said.
The incident happened on Thursday, September 18, at around 10:52 a.m., near Sterling Place and Butler Place. Investigators say the victim received a series of phone calls from multiple unidentified individuals claiming his Amazon account had been compromised.
The callers instructed him to withdraw the money so it could be “safeguarded.”
Following their directions, the victim placed the cash in a box and later met with a man who collected the funds before fleeing on foot. The suspect remains at large.
The sought individual is described as a male with a light complexion, last seen wearing a black shirt, blue jeans, multicolored sneakers, and a dark-colored baseball cap.
No injuries were reported, but detectives are urging residents to be cautious of similar scams targeting seniors through unsolicited phone calls.
