Newark, NJ – A gunman on an electric bike opened fire at a man on an e-bike in a Newark street confrontation Tuesday evening, and investigators are now asking for the public’s help to track him down.

The shooting unfolded at about 5:11 p.m. near Ludlow Street and Van Vechten Street, when Elizabeth Police Department officers working in the area saw a suspect discharge a firearm while riding past on an electric bike, according to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr. The intended victim, also riding an electric bike, managed to flee without being struck by gunfire.

Detectives recovered surveillance footage of the suspect and released an image in hopes of securing an identification. The man is described as Black, wearing a red hat, a hunter green hooded sweatshirt, and riding a black electric bike.

Miranda urged anyone with knowledge of the man’s identity to call Newark Police at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). Tipsters may remain anonymous and could receive a reward for information leading to an arrest.

The street shooting has sparked a citywide search for the rider in the red hat.
