NEWARK, NEW JERSEY — Police have arrested a 51-year-old man in connection with a hit-and-run that left a 9-year-old girl critically injured in Newark earlier this week, city officials announced Wednesday.

Key Points:

  • Sawab O. Williams, 51, was arrested for allegedly hitting a 9-year-old girl and fleeing the scene.
  • The incident occurred April 1 at Irvine Turner Boulevard and Spruce Street in Newark.
  • The victim remains in stable but critical condition at University Hospital.

Sawab O. Williams of Newark was taken into custody after being identified as the suspect in an April 1 collision at the intersection of Irvine Turner Boulevard and Spruce Street, according to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr.

Officers responded to the scene around 7:36 a.m., where the child had been struck by a vehicle. The driver fled without stopping. The girl was rushed to University Hospital and remains in stable but critical condition.

Detectives obtained a warrant for Williams’ arrest following their investigation. He is now facing charges of assault by auto and endangering an injured victim.
