Newark Police Arrest Juvenile in Rideshare Driver Stabbing Attempted Murder Case

A 17-year-old suspect is facing attempted murder charges after allegedly stabbing a rideshare driver multiple times during a trip early Saturday in Newark.

Newark, DE – Newark police arrested a 17-year-old male following an attempted murder investigation involving a rideshare driver who was stabbed multiple times early Saturday morning.

Officers responded around 12:01 a.m. to a reported stabbing in a business parking lot in the 100 block of Grove Lane.

Driver attacked at end of ride

Investigators determined the victim was working as a rideshare driver and had picked up the suspect with Grove Lane listed as the destination.

Police said that when the vehicle reached the location, the suspect—seated in the rear seat behind the driver—allegedly pulled out a knife and began stabbing the driver in the neck and back of the head without warning.

Victim fights back and escapes

Authorities said the suspect ordered the victim to exit the vehicle and continued attempting to stab him outside the car.

The driver was able to defend himself, prompting the suspect to flee on foot from the area. The victim then drove away and contacted police.

Teen arrested after investigation

The victim suffered stab wounds to the neck, shoulder, back and hand and was transported to a local hospital, where he was admitted in stable condition.

Detectives later identified a suspect and members of the Newark Police Department SWAT team and Criminal Investigations Division served a warrant at a residence within the city.

Charges filed against suspect

Police said the 17-year-old was taken into custody without incident and transported to Newark Police Headquarters.

The juvenile has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, first-degree attempted robbery, and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony. He is awaiting arraignment in Justice of the Peace Court No. 11.
