NEWARK, N.J. — Newark authorities are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect involved in an attempted burglary and vehicle theft early Wednesday, May 14, according to Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr.
The incident occurred around 1:40 a.m. near Eastern Parkway and Woodbine Avenue. Police responded after a resident reported a burglary in progress. The victim saw two individuals wearing ski masks and dressed in black attempting to steal one of the vehicles parked in the driveway.
When the victim yelled at the suspects, they fled the scene. However, before fleeing, the suspects gained access to the first vehicle, where they located a key ring containing keys to a second vehicle and the house. They then entered the second vehicle and attempted to use the keys to enter the residence.
No entry to the home was gained, and no injuries were reported. Surveillance footage from the victim’s home captured the suspects arriving in a blue SUV, which they parked at a nearby intersection.
Suspect description released
Detectives have released a description of one of the suspects based on surveillance footage. He is described as an African-American male wearing a black zip-up hooded sweater with a Polo logo, black sweatpants, and black sneakers with white shoelaces.
Investigators are reviewing footage and canvassing the area as part of the ongoing investigation. Police have not yet identified either suspect or the SUV used in the attempted burglary.
