Newark Police Seeking Auto Theft Suspect

NEWARK, NJ – Newark Police are searching for a suspect in connection with an auto theft that occurred in the 900 block of Frelinghuysen Avenue, last Saturday.

Newark Director of Public Safety Brian O’Hara reported that at approximately 8:10 a.m., a victim, who was repairing his vehicle, left the keys in the ignition and stepped away momentarily. When the victim returned, the vehicle, a black 2020 Honda Civic, was gone.

“Detectives investigating this incident reviewed surveillance footage of the below individual entering the vehicle, backing into a building and causing the front bumper to fall off, before fleeing inside the vehicle, heading north on Frelinghuysen Avenue,” O’Hara said. “The suspect is described as a Black male with a beard and bald head. He was wearing a black leather jacket along with a black and white, striped polo shirt, dark-colored pants and dark-colored shoes. He also was carrying a black bookbag.”
