ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Nine hunters are facing fines of up to $1,500 each for illegally baiting bears during Maryland’s annual black bear hunt, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Natural Resources Police officers cited the hunters for using banned attractants, including bacon grease, icing, corn, and other substances, to lure bears during the regulated hunting season.
Maryland law prohibits the use of bait to attract bears, as it gives hunters an unfair advantage and disrupts wildlife management efforts. DNR officials emphasized the importance of following hunting regulations to ensure fair chase practices and the sustainability of the state’s black bear population.
The violations were discovered during routine patrols by officers monitoring compliance with state hunting laws. DNR has not disclosed whether the illegal baiting affected the outcome of the hunt.
The annual black bear hunt is a tightly controlled event, and DNR officials warn that violating the rules can result in significant fines and possible legal consequences.
