TRENTON, N.J. — The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission on Monday announced the launch of an emergency REAL ID issuance program aimed at helping travelers with urgent needs obtain compliant identification before federal enforcement begins May 7.
The expedited service will assist a limited number of qualified customers who must fly domestically within 14 days due to life-or-death circumstances or other critical travel needs and lack an acceptable form of identification to clear TSA checkpoints.
“For years, the NJMVC has been issuing REAL IDs and preparing for the start of federal REAL ID enforcement,” said Acting Chief Administrator Latrecia Littles-Floyd. “Anticipating the recent increase in demand…we have made many additional accommodations…including with this new emergency program.”
Appointments under the program will be available exclusively at the NJMVC’s Trenton Regional Center and cannot be scheduled through the standard system. Customers must first complete a screening process and meet strict eligibility requirements, including documentation of their personal emergency and possession of the necessary documents for REAL ID issuance.
There is no charge for the appointment itself, but customers must pay an $80 shipping fee for expedited delivery of their REAL ID, which will be printed and mailed from a secure facility.
Eligibility, requirements outlined for limited access program
Customers who already possess a valid U.S. passport or other federally accepted identification will not be eligible. All applicants must confirm they meet REAL ID documentation requirements — including proof of Social Security number, two residential address verifications, and identity documents totaling six points under the REAL ID system.
The program goes into effect Thursday and will operate alongside the NJMVC’s existing REAL ID services offered through Licensing Centers and Mobile Units.
Over the last several months, the Commission has scaled up operations to address increased demand. Steps included the addition of hundreds of thousands of new appointments, the launch of “REAL ID Thursdays,” and expanding Mobile Unit service to Saturdays.
