North Carolina police officer killed in line of duty; suspect in custody

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Officer Michael Horan of the Greensboro Police Department was shot and killed on Monday while responding to a call at Food Lion on Lawndale Drive involving a man with a firearm, the department confirmed.

Officer Horan, a seven-year veteran of the force and a former United States Coast Guard service member, tragically lost his life in the line of duty. He is survived by his wife and children.

“Our hearts are broken as we mourn the loss of Officer Horan, a dedicated officer, veteran, husband, and father,” the department said in a statement. “We ask the community to keep his family and colleagues in their thoughts and prayers.”

The suspect involved in the shooting is in custody, authorities said. Details about the circumstances of the incident have not yet been released as the investigation is ongoing.
