NUTLEY, NJ – Police Director Alphonse Petracco and Chief Thomas Strumolo have issued a warning to residents about a potential scam in the area. Earlier, authorities responded to Spruce St. where a group of men were soliciting home improvement services, demanding substantial deposits for future jobs, including driveway sealcoating, power washing, and various repairs.
While no criminal activities were identified at the scene, such scenarios are frequent fraud cases. Scammers often pose as discount contractors, take deposits, and subsequently deliver subpar services.
Chief Strumolo recommends that residents always ask to speak with satisfied former clients of such services. Additionally, before signing any contracts or handing over a deposit, residents should ask for proof of insurance, appropriate licensing, and valid identification.
Director Petracco emphasized that any individual or group soliciting in the township must have a Township Issued Identification Card. He advises residents to refrain from entering contracts, sharing personal details, or giving money without consulting a trusted individual, be it a friend, family member, code official, or the police. The department remains committed to protecting and assisting the community.
