OAKLAND, NJ — A 36-year-old woman from Oakland has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child and simple assault following an investigation by local authorities and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

Cecilia Murillo Viera was taken into custody Sunday after police alleged she physically abused a juvenile under the age of 16. The Oakland Police Department first referred the matter to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, prompting a joint investigation.

According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, the investigation revealed evidence of physical abuse, leading to Murillo Viera’s arrest. She now faces charges of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child and simple assault, a disorderly persons offense.

Murillo Viera was remanded to the Bergen County Jail and is awaiting a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.

Authorities have not released further details regarding the incident or the condition of the child.
