TOMS RIVER, NJ – At any given time, thanks to New Jersey’s catch and release programs for criminals under the state’s bail reform law, there are at max, 50-100 inmates lodged inside the Ocean County Jail at any given time. Most of those inmates will spend less than 72 hours incarcerated before released by a judge under the state’s no bail, criminal justice reforms.
On Wednesday, the Ocean County Board of Commissioners approved a $625,000 project to resurface the jail’s rooftop recreation yard and showers.
The board also went on a spending spree during the meeting.
The board approved the release of $625,000 from the county Capital Improvement Fund.
In other expenditures by the county on Wednesday, the county commissioners approved $23 million construction project for a new road facility on Chestnut Street in Toms River.
The county also approved a $1.4 million upgrade to wireless fire alarms through various county buildings.

$475,000 was allocated to renovations at various branches of the Ocean County Library system. The county also approved $1.5 million in upgrades to several county parks.
