Wrong ticket turns into $100K win for Ohio woman on Friday the 13th
SHEFFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio — What started as a simple mistake turned into a $100,000 payday for an Ohio woman who accidentally bought the wrong lottery ticket.
The Sheffield Village resident intended to purchase a Powerball ticket on March 11 but realized after getting home that she had selected a Mega Millions ticket instead.
Frustrated at first, she kept the ticket anyway — not expecting it to amount to anything.
Two days later, after powerful winds knocked out her internet, she had to wait until the following night to check her numbers from the Friday the 13th drawing.
When she finally did, she was stunned.
The ticket matched four white balls and the Mega Ball, which typically pays $10,000. However, the prize was boosted to $100,000 thanks to a 10x multiplier.
Lottery officials said the odds of that win are about 1 in 893,761.
The woman said she repeatedly checked the numbers, barely sleeping as she tried to process the unexpected win.
During her visit to claim the prize, the excitement nearly caused another mishap when she briefly forgot to put her car in park before getting out, catching herself just in time.
After taxes, she will take home approximately $73,250.
The winning ticket was sold at Cap & Corks, located at 16708 Detroit Avenue in Lakewood.
She plans to use the money to help her grandchildren, pay off her car and save the rest.
