One gunned down and killed, one hurt in Benning Road shooting

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A shooting in Southeast late Sunday night left one man dead and another injured after gunfire broke out near the 4600 block of Benning Road, police confirmed.

The incident occurred just before 9:50 p.m. on May 18. Officers from the Sixth District responded to reports of gunshots and discovered a man unresponsive and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite emergency efforts by DC Fire and EMS, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was later identified as 36-year-old Ryan Matthews of Southeast, D.C. No arrests have been announced.

A second man, also an adult, arrived at a local hospital shortly after the shooting with gunshot wounds believed to be sustained during the same incident. He is currently being treated for injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Homicide investigation underway, reward offered

The Metropolitan Police Department is actively investigating the case and is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
