Two Marines Suspected in Murder of 19-Year-Old Camp Lejeune Marine

CAMP LEJEUNE, NC — Officials identified Austin B. Schwenk, a 19-year-old lance corporal from Onslow County, North Carolina, as the Marine killed in a Wednesday shooting at Camp Lejeune.

The incident occurred in a barracks room on the base, according to a statement from the base. Schwenk enlisted in 2022 and was part of the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment.

According to the Marine Corps, on October 18, at approximately 10:15 p.m., base law enforcement authorities apprehended a Marine suspected of involvement in the death of another Marine. The incident occurred in an on-base barracks room. One suspect was immediately taken into custody.

On Friday, a second Marine was detained on suspicion of involvement in the fatal shooting. Authorities are treating the death as a homicide and have identified the detained Marine as a suspect.
