WESTPORT, N.Y. – A stretch of Interstate 87 southbound between Exits 31 and 30 was closed Monday afternoon after a tractor-trailer overturned on the highway, New York State Police said.

Troopers responded to the crash scene in the town of Westport, where a red cab and attached white trailer came to rest on their sides along the shoulder and adjacent embankment. Snow-covered conditions were visible in the area as emergency crews worked to secure the scene.

Authorities said no timeline has been set for reopening the affected section of I-87. A detour has been established, directing southbound motorists to use State Route 9 and State Route 73 until the wreckage can be cleared.

State Police and local fire and rescue units remained on site to assist with traffic control and recovery operations. The cause of the crash has not yet been released.

An overturned tractor-trailer forced the closure of I-87 southbound near Westport as crews worked to clear the highway and redirect traffic.
