GREENVILLE, N.Y. – The New York State Police have expanded their search for an armed homicide suspect, urging residents to immediately report any sightings and review home security camera footage that could help investigators track his movements.
In an updated statement Friday, investigators said the search for Thomas Ryan now involves an extensive, multi-agency effort that includes neighboring police departments, crime analysis centers, transportation partners, and aviation resources.
“The New York State Police, Troop F BCI, in partnership with our local, county, and federal law enforcement partners, continue to actively investigate this homicide and are pursuing every available lead to locate Thomas Ryan,” the agency said. “We are asking the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any sightings of Ryan or the victim’s gray 2016 Toyota Prius.”
Investigators seek overnight surveillance footage
State police are now asking residents throughout the Greenville area to examine any available home surveillance video recorded beginning around 6 p.m. Thursday through the overnight hours.
“The New York State Police Troop F Bureau of Criminal Investigation is asking residents of the Greenville community to review any available home surveillance footage recorded from approximately 6:00 p.m. on August 6, 2026, through the overnight hours,” the agency said.
Authorities emphasized that even seemingly insignificant information could prove critical.
“Anyone who observes suspicious activity is urged to contact the New York State Police immediately. Even information that may seem insignificant could prove valuable to the investigation.”
Investigators have not released additional details about the homicide or the circumstances surrounding the fatal house fire as the investigation continues.
Suspect considered armed and dangerous
Police said Ryan is believed to be operating the victim’s gray 2016 Toyota Prius bearing New York registration HNH-7671.
Investigators continue to warn that Ryan should be considered armed and dangerous.
“Anyone with information regarding Ryan’s whereabouts is urged not to approach him and to immediately contact the New York State Police Troop F Communications (845-344-5300) or call 911,” the agency said.
“The assistance of the community is critical, and even the smallest piece of information could prove invaluable in bringing this investigation to a safe resolution.”
The search is drawing attention across the region because Orange County borders northern New Jersey, with major travel corridors including Interstate 84, Interstate 87, Route 17, and the New York State Thruway connecting the Hudson Valley to New Jersey. While investigators have not indicated Ryan is believed to be in New Jersey, authorities are encouraging anyone who sees him or the vehicle to contact law enforcement immediately rather than attempting to intervene.
