Judge orders release of Ecuadorian woman held in New Jersey immigration detention

by Shore News Network September 30, 2025
By Shore News Network

Newark, NJ – A federal judge has ordered the immediate release of Diana M. Rivera Zumba, a 44-year-old Ecuadorian woman who has lived in the United States for more than two decades, ruling that her detention violated federal immigration law and the Constitution.

In a decision issued Friday, U.S. District Judge Katharine S. Hayden found that Rivera Zumba’s confinement under Section 235 of the Immigration and Nationality Act was unlawful. The court held that the statute, which mandates detention for certain noncitizens during removal proceedings, did not apply to her case.

Rivera Zumba entered the country without inspection in 2002 and has remained in New Jersey ever since. She and her late husband were placed in removal proceedings in 2017, but after an initial denial of her application for cancellation of removal, her case was sent back to the immigration court in 2023 for further proceedings. She has been waiting nearly two years for a new hearing date.

Despite that procedural posture, immigration officials detained Rivera Zumba at the Delaney Hall facility in Newark. In her ruling, Judge Hayden said the detention violated both the INA and the Fifth Amendment’s Due Process Clause.

The court granted Rivera Zumba’s habeas petition, ordered her release within 24 hours, and temporarily barred immigration authorities from re-arresting her under a separate detention statute for 14 days to allow her to return home.

The ruling marks a significant victory for Rivera Zumba, whose legal battle has stretched on for more than six years.

GOP lawmakers demand Mikie Sherrill release Naval Academy records as cheating scandal continues

by Shore News Network September 30, 2025
By Shore News Network

Trenton, NJ – Dozens of Republican legislators from both the New Jersey State Senate and Assembly are calling on Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill to authorize the release of records tied to her alleged involvement in a 1994 U.S. Naval Academy cheating scandal.

In a joint statement issued Tuesday, the lawmakers said they were “stunned” by recent revelations that Sherrill, now a Democratic member of Congress and declared candidate for governor, was barred from walking in her graduation due to the scandal.

“While we respect her service, we are deeply disappointed that she denied her involvement during her first campaign for Congress and has maintained that lie ever since,” the statement read. “New Jerseyans deserve to know whether Congresswoman Sherrill upheld that standard.”

The group of Republicans argued that Sherrill has an obligation to disclose the full details of her case, including any statements she made to Naval investigators, the specific violations she committed, and the extent of her punishment.

“The only way to accomplish that level of disclosure is for the Congresswoman to personally authorize the immediate and full release of all records limited specifically to her involvement in the 1994 cheating scandal at the Naval Academy,” the statement continued.

The call for transparency was backed by more than 40 GOP legislators across the state, including State Senators Mike Testa, Declan O’Scanlon, Doug Steinhardt, and Kristin Corrado, along with Assembly members Robert Auth, Vicky Flynn, Erik Peterson, and Dawn Fantasia.

Sherrill, who has served in Congress since 2019 and previously flew helicopters in the U.S. Navy, has not yet issued a public response to the lawmakers’ demand.

Cops lose bid for immunity in New Jersey wrongful arrest case

by Shore News Network September 30, 2025
By Shore News Network

Trenton, NJ – A federal judge has rejected attempts by two law enforcement officers to escape liability in a long-running civil rights lawsuit tied to the 2015 arrest of Ronald Saintil.

U.S. District Judge Zahid Quraishi on Monday denied summary judgment motions filed by Scott Crocco, a Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office sergeant, and Thomas O’Connor, a Carteret police detective. Both men had argued they were shielded by qualified immunity, a legal doctrine that protects government officials from liability unless they violated clearly established rights.

The case, first filed in 2017, stems from an operation in which Crocco, O’Connor, and other officers descended on Saintil’s Hamilton, New Jersey apartment while investigating a homicide. What occurred during the encounter remains sharply disputed. Saintil claims his rights were violated during his arrest and the search of his property, while the officers maintain their actions were lawful.

The district court had previously sided with the defendants, granting summary judgment in their favor, but the Third Circuit Court of Appeals reversed in part last year. The appellate judges instructed the lower court to revisit whether Crocco and O’Connor were entitled to immunity.

With Monday’s ruling, the case will now move forward toward trial, leaving the two officers still facing civil rights claims nearly a decade after the events in question.

Stafford man arrested after stealing car to go on ‘crack’ run

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA – Deputies say a 36-year-old Stafford man is behind bars after stealing a woman’s vehicle from a hotel parking lot and attempting to use it for a drug run.

The incident began on September 28, when deputies were called to the Sleep Inn on Warrenton Road for a report of unauthorized use of a vehicle. The victim told deputies she had been sharing a room with Trent Robinson when he asked her to drive him to buy crack cocaine. She refused and fell asleep, only to wake up and discover her vehicle was gone.

Authorities determined Robinson, who has a suspended license and an outstanding felony capias warrant from Spotsylvania, had taken the car. Deputies quickly entered the vehicle into the stolen database.

Just after 7:30 p.m., the stolen vehicle was spotted traveling on Warrenton Road near America’s Best Value Inn—ironically right next door to where the crime began. Robinson was stopped by First Sergeants B.U. Demirci and M.R. Flick and taken into custody without incident.

He was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle and driving while suspended, in addition to being served with the outstanding warrant. Robinson is being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.

Grand jury clears New Jersey police sergeant in AG investigation into deadly crash

by Shore News Network September 30, 2025
By Shore News Network

TRENTON, NJ – A state grand jury has declined to bring criminal charges against a Franklin Borough police sergeant in connection with a crash that killed 19-year-old Deanna D’Arco of Vernon last year.

The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) announced Monday that jurors reviewed extensive evidence — including police dashcam video, 911 recordings, crash reports, surveillance footage, toxicology results and autopsy findings — before voting “no bill” on September 29. The decision means no charges will be filed against Sergeant William Grissom, the officer involved in the May 27, 2024 collision.

Investigators said Grissom was driving southbound on Route 23 at about 38 to 40 mph in a marked patrol car when a black Honda Prelude exited a ShopRite parking lot, crossed the double yellow line and entered the southbound lane. The police vehicle struck the Honda’s passenger side, where D’Arco was seated.

Grissom immediately radioed dispatch, helped remove the car door to reach D’Arco and remained at the scene until backup arrived. D’Arco was rushed to Newton Medical Center and later transferred to Morristown Medical Center, where she died two days after the crash. The Honda’s driver and Grissom sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash evidence, including dashcam and surveillance footage, has been made publicly available as part of OPIA’s transparency guidelines.

Lancaster killer gets up to 70 years for random street shooting of deaf man

by Shore News Network September 30, 2025
By Shore News Network

LANCASTER, PA – A Manheim Township man will spend decades behind bars after pleading guilty to fatally shooting a deaf and mute man on a Lancaster city street in what prosecutors called a “deliberate and unprovoked attack.”

Judge Jeffery Wright sentenced 25-year-old Edwin Ulysses Concepcion to 35 to 70 years in state prison Monday after he admitted to gunning down 68-year-old Israel Lugo on May 1, 2023. Concepcion entered guilty pleas to criminal homicide, illegal firearm possession, carrying without a license, altering a firearm’s manufacturer number and making false written statements.

Prosecutors said Concepcion followed Lugo on West New Street before pulling a handgun and firing four shots. Surveillance footage captured the killing and later tracked Concepcion leaving the area in a rideshare vehicle he had ordered. Detectives recovered a handgun with an obliterated serial number, clothing and a debit card linking him to the crime. His fingerprints matched those found on the weapon.

Lugo and Concepcion were strangers. In court, Lugo’s brother, speaking through a translator, demanded answers that Concepcion did not provide. The defendant only told the courtroom that he “appreciated” those present and hoped to learn something from the experience.

Concepcion, who was barred from possessing firearms due to a prior burglary conviction, was also accused of lying on an application to buy a pistol from a Manheim Township gun shop in April 2023. He will be required to pay more than $1,400 in funeral expenses as part of his sentence.

Queens couple and accomplice indicted in sex trafficking scheme tied to Flushing brothel

by Shore News Network September 30, 2025
By Shore News Network

QUEENS, N.Y. – A married couple from Elmhurst and an alleged accomplice have been indicted on sex trafficking charges for coercing a Colombian woman into prostitution inside a Flushing apartment while holding her children’s passports and dangling the promise of reuniting her family, prosecutors said Tuesday.

District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Kwai Ling Chan, 47, Bobby Chen, 38, and Tashi Chimchu, 34, face multiple counts of sex trafficking and promoting prostitution after an NYPD undercover operation shut down the alleged brothel at 43-17 Union Street earlier this month.

According to the indictment, Chan arranged a $14,000 “fee” to bring the victim’s 10-year-old daughter to New York from Colombia. Prosecutors say the victim was told she could repay the debt by working as a masseuse but was later threatened and forced into sex with clients against her will.

Chan allegedly took the passports of the victim and her 6-year-old daughter already in the U.S., withholding them as leverage. When the victim initially refused a client’s demand for sex, Chan warned her that her older daughter would never be allowed into the country and made threats involving her younger child.

Between July 6 and September 4, the woman was forced into prostitution several days a week, with money turned over to Chan or Chen, prosecutors said. Chimchu allegedly joined in late August, arranging appointments, negotiating payments, and collecting proceeds for the couple. Officers who arrested him on September 4 also recovered a pepper spray ball gun.

Chen was taken into custody the following morning when he arrived at the precinct to check on his wife, authorities said.

Chan and Chen were arraigned on six counts of sex trafficking and multiple promoting prostitution charges. Chimchu was indicted on three counts of sex trafficking and additional charges including unlawful possession of noxious material.

Supreme Court Justice Peter Vallone ordered Chan and Chen back in court on November 12. If convicted of the top count, all three face up to 25 years in prison.

New Jersey man gets 4 years for buying torture videos of monkeys

by Shore News Network September 30, 2025
By Shore News Network

COLUMBUS, OH – A New Jersey man has been sentenced to four years in federal prison for conspiring to purchase and distribute violent videos depicting the torture and mutilation of monkeys, prosecutors announced Tuesday.

Giancarlo Morelli, of Wharton, admitted to paying for the creation of animal crush videos through online groups dedicated to sharing extreme abuse. Prosecutors said he bought 19 such videos from Nicholas T. Dryden, who ran forums where buyers commissioned and traded clips of animals being tortured.

According to court records, Dryden paid a minor in Indonesia to produce the videos, which showed baby and adolescent monkeys suffering severe abuse, including mutilation. Morelli not only purchased the videos but also provided feedback and suggestions for future productions, prosecutors said.

“Those making or sharing animal crush videos have reason to fear capture and swift justice in the form of sentences like today’s,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Adam Gustafson. He stressed that federal law prohibits such conduct and warned that all participants will be prosecuted.

U.S. Attorney Dominick S. Gerace II of the Southern District of Ohio added that paying others to torture animals carries the same weight as committing the abuse directly.

The case was investigated by the FBI and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Prosecutors said the investigation dismantled online groups dedicated to the trade of animal torture content.

Morelli was sentenced to 48 months in prison, marking another conviction in a widening federal crackdown on the underground trade of animal cruelty videos.

He killed a dog, then set fire to its body on a Queens street. Now he’s facing multiple charges

by Shore News Network September 30, 2025
By Shore News Network

QUEENS, N.Y. – A Queens man has been indicted on multiple charges after prosecutors say he killed a pit bull belonging to a relative before setting the animal’s body on fire in South Ozone Park.

Isaiah Gurley, 29, of Jamaica, faces counts of aggravated animal cruelty, arson, criminal mischief and other crimes for the July 24 incident that left the burned remains of a service animal in the middle of a residential street.

According to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, Gurley was entrusted to care for the dog, named Square K, but instead inflicted “unfathomable cruelty” before attempting to destroy the evidence in flames. Katz vowed to pursue the case aggressively and renewed calls for stronger penalties under New York’s animal cruelty statutes.

Surveillance footage cited in court shows Gurley entering First Class Deli on Rockaway Boulevard around 4:40 a.m., where he allegedly stole a bottle of oil. Minutes later, prosecutors say he was seen dragging an unconscious dog by a leash along 116th Avenue before dousing the body and setting it ablaze near parked cars.

At about 9 a.m. the same morning, an NYPD lieutenant on an unrelated call discovered the charred dog remains. The NYPD Animal Cruelty Investigation Squad launched an investigation, aided by surveillance video.

Police released Gurley’s image to the public, and on July 28 a 911 caller reported spotting him at a Foot Locker inside the Queens Center mall. He was taken into custody by the 110th Precinct.

A forensic exam conducted by the ASPCA confirmed the dog died from blunt force trauma prior to being burned.

Gurley was arraigned on a seven-count indictment before Supreme Court Justice Michael Yavinsky, who ordered him back to court on November 18. If convicted, he faces up to seven years in prison.

Mikie Sherrill backers flaunt ‘Punch more Nazis’ signs in Toms River

Toms River, NJ – Supporters of Rep. Mikie Sherrill stirred attention in Ocean County when they hoisted bright yellow “86-47” signs at a campaign gathering, some of which carried the additional phrase “Punch More Nazis.”

Protesters called for violence against President Trump and “Nazis”, essentially anyone who doesn’t agree with Mikie Sherrill’s far-left agenda.

The numbers referenced on the signs are shorthand frequently used by progressive groups, with “86” commonly meaning to reject or get rid of something, and “47” seen as a reference to former President Donald Trump, the 45th president, running for office again. The added slogan drew sharp responses from residents who said the message crossed a line.

The display came during a political event aimed at boosting voter turnout in a district where Sherrill, a Democrat, has been actively campaigning. Witnesses reported that a small group of attendees held the signs high as they joined chants supporting Sherrill’s campaign for governor of New Jersey.

Sherrill’s campaign did not issue an immediate statement regarding the wording on the signs.

By Shore News Network

BURLINGTON COUNTY, NJ – Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst was placed on lockdown Tuesday morning following reports of a potential threat, officials said.

UPDATE: At 12:05 pm, the lockdown was ended without incident

An alert was issued around 11 a.m. through the base’s social media channels, instructing all personnel outdoors to take cover. The cause of the lockdown was not immediately confirmed, and officials have not provided a timeline for when restrictions may be lifted.

“THERE IS A LOCKDOWN AT JBMDL. ALL PERSONNEL ARE TO LOCKDOWN UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. ALL PERSONNEL OUTDOORS SHOULD TAKE COVER,” the base posted on its Facebook page.

The base has experienced similar alerts in the past. In 2023, a lockdown was declared after reports of an active shooter in an Army Reserve division, though an investigation later determined no shooter was present and operations resumed within an hour.

As of Tuesday, military and law enforcement officials continue to assess the situation.
