Woodbridge man arrested after armed drug trafficking stop at Stafford County Wawa

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA – A late-night traffic stop outside a Wawa convenience store ended with a Woodbridge man in custody after deputies say he was caught with a firearm and a large stash of drugs while driving on a suspended license.

Detectives with the Special Investigations Unit had received information on September 27 that 32-year-old Azon Heywood was heading into Stafford County with narcotics despite not having a valid license. Deputies spotted his vehicle, which had no front plate and an expired inspection sticker, exiting I-95 onto Warrenton Road before pulling into the Wawa at 9 South Gateway Drive.

Authorities initiated what they described as a high-risk stop. Heywood initially refused commands to keep his hands visible and was seen reaching around inside the vehicle, sparking a brief standoff before he surrendered and was taken into custody.

A search of the vehicle turned up suspected controlled substances, packaging materials linked to distribution, ammunition, and a firearm with its serial number completely removed.

Heywood now faces a list of charges including transporting narcotics into Virginia, possession with intent to distribute, obstruction of justice, multiple firearm violations, and traffic-related offenses. He is being held without bond at Rappahannock Regional Jail.

NJ Israel Commission demands release of hostages as Gaza war reaches 700 days

by Shore News Network September 30, 2025
By Shore News Network

Trenton, NJ – The New Jersey-Israel Commission earlier this month marked 700 days since the October 7, 2023 terrorist attack in Israel, renewing its call for the immediate release of all hostages still held in Gaza.

The attack, which took place during the Jewish festival of Simhat Torah, left more than 1,200 dead and over 250 kidnapped by Hamas. Victims included women, children, and the elderly. Nearly 50 hostages remain in captivity, including the remains of two murdered Americans. Among those taken was Edan Alexander of Tenafly, who was released in May.

“Hamas has now been holding innocent civilians hostage for nearly two years,” said commission co-chair Karin Elkis. “We insist that every single captive must come home, if we are to realize an end to the suffering endured by Israeli and American families and communities affected by October 7th. Bring them home now.”

Co-chair Mark Levenson echoed the urgency to bring them home, saying the continued captivity “emboldens terrorists and puts innocent lives at risk.”

Released hostages and medical reports from recovered remains describe conditions of captivity that include physical abuse, psychological torture, malnutrition, isolation, and sexual assault. Families have been denied any form of communication with their loved ones.

The New Jersey-Israel Commission, established in 1989 under the Department of State, fosters trade, cultural, and educational ties. New Jersey-Israel trade accounts for an estimated $1.7 billion annually, supporting thousands of jobs in the state.

New Jersey launches traveling exhibit to mark 250 years of American independence

by Shore News Network September 30, 2025
By Shore News Network

Trenton, NJ – RevolutionNJ has unveiled a new traveling exhibition titled Revolutionary Lives: Living the American Experiment Then and Now, bringing the stories of everyday New Jerseyans from the Revolutionary era into communities across the state.

The free exhibit highlights the lives and choices of ordinary people whose contributions shaped both the fight for independence and the ongoing pursuit of civic engagement in modern New Jersey. It will be available to host at libraries, schools, city halls, historic sites, and other public spaces statewide.

“Revolutionary Lives is one of the many ways RevolutionNJ supports communities as local leaders develop their own plans for America’s 250th,” said Lieutenant Governor Tahesha Way, who also serves as Secretary of State. “It offers residents a tangible connection to the values and experiences that defined the Revolution and illustrates how those ideals persist in our communities.”

The exhibit is presented in two adaptable formats: six double-sided stretch-fabric banners for open spaces, or twelve single-sided banners designed for hallways and corridors. Each installation includes an interactive panel that encourages visitors to reflect on their own role in shaping the nation’s future.

Sara Cureton, executive director of the New Jersey Historical Commission, noted that the exhibition explores how Revolutionary ideals of liberty, equality, and justice influenced life 250 years ago while continuing to inspire New Jerseyans today. Educational materials will also be provided to schools and community groups.

Carrie Fellows, executive director of Crossroads of the American Revolution, added that the project helps residents connect with the stories of ordinary people who, through everyday decisions, became part of history.

Grand jury declines charges for New Jersey State Police in 2024 Knowlton custody death

TRENTON, NJ – A state grand jury has declined to bring criminal charges against New Jersey State Police troopers involved in the in-custody death of Armond Anthony Avitable, a 38-year-old man who died following a February 2024 law enforcement encounter in Knowlton.

The announcement came Monday from the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, following a months-long investigation conducted by the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA). The case was presented to a grand jury in accordance with the state’s Independent Prosecutor Directive, which mandates outside review for all deaths involving police custody.

According to the investigation, Avitable matched the description of an active shooter suspect after a 911 call reported gunfire at a Columbia Street residence in Knowlton on February 12, where one female victim was found fatally shot. He was taken into custody by state troopers near Route 46 and Interstate 80 after a physical struggle.

While in custody, Avitable experienced a medical emergency and became unresponsive. Troopers performed lifesaving measures, including the use of a defibrillator, before emergency personnel transported him to Lehigh Valley Hospital — Pocono in Pennsylvania, where he was pronounced dead at 8:57 p.m.

A Pennsylvania medical examiner determined the cause of death to be “drug toxicity complicating hypertensive and arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.” The manner of death was ruled accidental.

The grand jury reviewed medical evidence, video footage, radio transmissions, 911 recordings, and testimony from witnesses before reaching a “no bill” decision, meaning no indictments would be filed. Body-worn camera footage from the incident has previously been released by the Attorney General’s Office.

Per state law, OPIA will now determine whether any administrative review is required by the involved law enforcement agencies.

—

Key Points

  • No charges filed against NJ State Police in death of Armond Anthony Avitable
  • Death ruled accidental due to drug toxicity and pre-existing heart disease
  • Grand jury reviewed video, 911 calls, and witness testimony before declining indictment

Several other games also delivered sizable payouts. A Keno ticket worth $20,038 was sold at Loony’s Pub in Bel Air on Saturday. Meanwhile, the popular Pick 5 game produced five prizes ranging from $25,000 to $50,000 — all unclaimed as of Monday — with winning tickets sold in Deale, Clinton, Windsor Mill, Laurel, and Baltimore.

Prince George’s nurse replays old Racetrax ticket and wins nearly $31K

Berwyn Heights, MD – A Prince George’s County woman turned a previously played Racetrax ticket into a $30,879 jackpot win after replaying it on her way to work last week.

The Berwyn Heights nurse stopped at Parkway Liquors on September 24 to cash in some scratch-offs, including a $100 winner. She used those winnings to purchase a new Racetrax ticket, asking the cashier to simply replay one from her old stack.

The $20 Trifecta ticket, good for 20 races, carried the numbers 10, 12, and 11. Later that day, she spotted the winning sequence on a Racetrax monitor while shopping for groceries.

She said she was speechless when she realized the horses had finished in the exact order, securing her the $30,879 prize. Excited, she called off work and shared the news with her children and her pastor, noting that part of the winnings will go toward church renovations currently underway.

The winner also plans to pay off bills and make improvements around her home. Earlier this year, she had another stroke of luck with a significant Keno prize.

Parkway Liquors, located at 6017 Greenbelt Avenue, will receive a $308.79 bonus for selling the ticket.

Philadelphia man charged after investigators find child abuse materials and disturbing 170-page manual

Harrisburg, PA – A Philadelphia man is facing a series of felony charges after investigators with the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office said they found child sexual abuse materials and a lengthy guide on exploiting children during a raid at his home.

Attorney General Dave Sunday announced Monday that 31-year-old Abdiel Mendoza was arrested following a proactive investigation by the Child Predator Section. Agents tracked the online sharing of lewd material to Mendoza and served a search warrant last week at his Griscom Street residence.

Inside, investigators seized a computer and cellphone containing multiple child sexual abuse files allegedly shared on peer-to-peer platforms. They also recovered a 170-page document titled How to Practice Child Love, which authorities described as a how-to manual for forming sexual relationships with children.

Mendoza was arraigned Friday and released after posting $50,000 bail.

Attorney General Sunday called the evidence deeply disturbing and said the Child Predator Section acted swiftly to secure an arrest. He emphasized that protecting children from sexual exploitation remains a top priority for his office.

The case will be prosecuted by Deputy Attorney General Kimberly Moraski. Officials noted that all charges are accusations, and Mendoza is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Fugitive extradited from India for deadly 2005 Hicksville crash

by Shore News Network September 29, 2025
By Shore News Network

Mineola, NY – A man who fled to India after a fatal car crash in Hicksville two decades ago has been extradited to Nassau County to face charges, prosecutors announced Friday.

Ganesh Shenoy, 54, was arraigned September 26 on an indictment for second-degree manslaughter in the death of 44-year-old Philip Mastropolo. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded, with his next court date set for October 14.

Key Points

  • Ganesh Shenoy fled to India two weeks after a 2005 fatal crash in Hicksville.
  • Shenoy was extradited September 25 and arraigned on manslaughter charges.
  • If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison.

Fatal collision

Prosecutors said on April 11, 2005, Shenoy ran a steady red light at Levittown Parkway and Old Country Road at twice the speed limit. His vehicle struck Mastropolo’s Cadillac, sending it 65 feet into a Freightliner truck stopped at the light.

Mastropolo, a father of two, was pronounced dead at the scene. Shenoy was taken to a hospital but refused treatment and left.

Two weeks later, despite having his driver’s license and passport seized, Shenoy boarded a plane at JFK Airport to Mumbai. He did not return.

International pursuit

An indictment was returned in August 2005, and both a warrant and an Interpol Red Notice were issued. Shenoy was arrested abroad and returned to the U.S. on September 25, marking the first extradition from India to the U.S. since 2017, according to Nassau prosecutors.

District Attorney Anne Donnelly said, “For decades, Philip’s family has lived with the pain of his loss and the knowledge that the man responsible was half a world away. But not anymore.”

The case is being prosecuted by the Vehicular Crimes Bureau under Executive ADA Kevin Higgins.

After 20 years, a fugitive’s flight came to an end at Nassau courthouse.
