Cory Booker Hosted a Party After Mikie Sherrill’s Two Daughters Accepted to U.S. Naval Academy This Year

by Shore News Network September 29, 2025
By Shore News Network

Newark, NJ – Two daughters of U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill were among only three New Jersey students admitted to the U.S. Naval Academy this year, joining 13 other Garden State service academy appointees honored at a June 13 send-off reception hosted by Senator Cory Booker.

The sisters, Lincoln and Margaret Hedberg, graduated from Montclair Kimberley Academy. They entered Annapolis in July as members of the class of 2029.

Sherrill’s congressional office even issued a press release on the Naval Academy appointments, but did not note that two of the appointees were her own children.

Key Points

  • Lincoln and Margaret Hedberg, daughters of Rep. Mikie Sherrill, accepted appointments to the Naval Academy.
  • They were two of only three New Jersey students admitted in 2025.
  • Senator Cory Booker hosted a statewide send-off reception for 13 appointees and their families.
Cory Booker Hosted a Party After Mikie Sherrill's Two Daughters Accepted to U.S. Naval Academy This Year

Booker’s service academy reception

At the Newark event, Booker praised the appointees for “academic excellence, athletic endeavor, leadership, community service, and…profound belief in the wellbeing of our nation.”

The list of honorees included appointees to the U.S. Military Academy, Air Force Academy, Merchant Marine Academy, and the Naval Academy. The Hedberg sisters were recognized alongside fellow New Jersey Naval Academy selectee Brandon Park of Northern Valley Regional High School.

Academy admissions rules

The Department of Defense has emphasized that service academy admissions do not provide preferential treatment to children of members of Congress or military families. Graduates of the military academies also do not rate preferential treatment for their children or family members.

While preference is given to family members of veterans killed and wounded in action, all other candidates are chosen by merit.

Candidates must qualify through academic scores, fitness standards, leadership evaluations, and a limited nomination system.

With the appointments now official, Sherrill’s daughters will begin the path of midshipmen training that could lead to commissions as Navy officers.

For this New Jersey political family, service has become a family tradition. Sherrill’s husband Jason Hedberg is also a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy.

This week, the New York Post alleged Mr. Hedberg was also involved in the ongoing Naval Academy cheating scandal, but was not charged or disciplined. Sherrill was benched on graduation day for her role in the cheating scandal.

She maintains that her only infraction was not turning in her cheating classmates, but has so far refused to make her disciplinary record publicly available to fact check.

Sherrill’s two daughters raise the question of privilege for the congresswoman, leaving many to question which New Jersey students, perhaps even minority students, could have been pushed off the line for Sherrill’s two children.

DOJ sues over violent protest at New Jersey synagogue under federal worship law

by Shore News Network September 29, 2025
By Shore News Network

West Orange, NJ – The Department of Justice filed a civil lawsuit Monday alleging protesters used threats and violence against congregants at Congregation Ohr Torah during a November protest that disrupted a memorial service.

The complaint, lodged in the District of New Jersey, says defendants intended to interfere with the synagogue community’s right to worship under the FACE Act.

Key Points

  • Lawsuit alleges threats, intimidation and violence at a West Orange synagogue protest.
  • DoJ seeks an injunction blocking future FACE Act violations statewide.
  • Officials say allegations are civil; defendants are presumed not liable unless proven.

Civil suit targets alleged threats and intimidation

Attorney General Pamela Bondi said, “No American should be harassed, targeted, or discriminated against for peacefully practicing their religion,” underscoring the filing in a statement Monday.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon added that the Civil Rights Division will “vigorously enforce” the right to worship without fear.

Injunction sought to protect worshipers

The suit seeks court-ordered relief preventing the defendants from using force, threats of force, or obstruction at synagogues across New Jersey.

The FACE Act, enacted in 1994, prohibits conduct that intentionally injures, intimidates, or interferes with people seeking or providing services or worship at houses of faith.

DoJ said the case is being handled by the Civil Rights Division and remains a civil action at this stage.

A federal judge will now decide whether the protest crossed the legal line from speech to intimidation.

DNA links 75-year-old convicted rapist to 1981 Baltimore home invasion killing

by Shore News Network September 29, 2025
By Shore News Network

Baltimore, MD – A man already serving five life sentences in Delaware has been identified as the suspect in a 44-year-old Baltimore County homicide, authorities announced Thursday.

Detectives say Alan Bass, 75, was linked by DNA to the fatal shooting of Samuel Allen, 59, inside his Liberty Road home in 1981. Allen’s wife and daughter witnessed the killing after an armed intruder wearing surgical gloves stormed the house demanding money.

Key Points

  • Samuel Allen was shot and killed during a 1981 home invasion in Baltimore County.
  • DNA from evidence tested in 2023 matched convicted rapist Alan Bass.
  • Bass, 75, remains in Delaware prison and will not face trial in Maryland due to health issues.

Investigators said the suspect fired two shots when Allen entered the kitchen, striking him once in the upper body before robbing him and forcing his daughter outside. The gunman fled after realizing he had left a cloth bag at the scene.

DNA breakthrough

That bag, along with a shirt, was collected as evidence in 1981. After decades with no leads, Baltimore County’s Cold Case Squad re-examined the materials in 2023. Forensic analysts at DNA Laboratories International developed a profile from the bag and entered it into CODIS in late 2024.

By December, a hit identified Bass, who has been incarcerated in Delaware on rape convictions. A warrant was issued, and further testing confirmed the DNA match in January.

Prosecution on hold

Bass is not being transferred to Maryland because of what officials described as “significant health conditions.” However, the Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Office said it is prepared to move forward with prosecution if his status in Delaware changes.

Allen’s murder remained unsolved for more than four decades before the cold case team uncovered the link.

The gunman’s forgotten bag eventually brought him down.

NJ prosecutor suspended over Facebook post mocking Charlie Kirk assassination

by Shore News Network September 29, 2025
By Shore News Network

Elizabeth, NJ – A Union County assistant prosecutor has been suspended after posting a mocking remark on Facebook about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

“Charlie Kirk was shot. Hmmm… thoughts and prayers. Now, what’s for dinner.”

The prosecutor, identified as Colleen Ruppert, leads the office’s Domestic Violence Unit. She used the alias “Colly Ru” to write on Sept. 26: “Charlie Kirk was shot. Hmmm… thoughts and prayers. Now, what’s for dinner.”

Key Points

  • Colleen Ruppert, assistant prosecutor in Union County, suspended after Facebook post.
  • Post mocked assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
  • Internal investigation launched; two other employees also under review.

The Union County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed her suspension and described the matter as a personnel issue. Officials also said two other employees who “liked” the post are under review.

Post defended, investigation ongoing

Ruppert later defended the remark, citing her political beliefs and saying she did not feel sympathy for Kirk because of what she described as his impact on democracy. She also called the message an attempt at humor.

As of Monday, she has not resigned. The investigation is ongoing, according to the prosecutor’s office.

National wave of backlash

Ruppert’s suspension comes amid a wider pattern across the U.S. of public employees and private workers facing disciplinary action after making similar statements about Kirk’s killing. Cases of suspensions, firings and resignations have been reported in multiple states.

Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was assassinated earlier this month, triggering widespread reaction online and sharp divisions in public response.

The prosecutor’s office has not set a timeline for resolving Ruppert’s case.

Why are some Republicans Calling Mikie Sherrill Becky or Rebecca?

by Shore News Network September 29, 2025
By Shore News Network

Trenton, N.J. – In the middle of New Jersey’s contentious governor’s race, Republican and conservatives on social media have latched onto a new line of mocking Democratic candidate Rep. Mikie Sherrill: calling her “Becky.”

First they called her “Vanilla Harris” and “East Coast Kamala”, now she’s just Becky and Rebecca online to many on the right.

The nickname, drawn from her legal name Rebecca Michelle Sherrill ( Hedberg), has taken hold on social media, where critics use it to paint her as inauthentic or privileged. The label comes as Sherrill faces heightened scrutiny over her military record and congressional voting history.

Key Points

  • Conservatives online have branded Mikie Sherrill as “Becky,” mocking her legal name.
  • The attacks coincide with controversy over leaked military records from her Naval Academy days.
  • Sherrill’s campaign calls the moves political “dirty tricks.”

Her chosen nickname “Mikie,” adopted during her time at the Naval Academy, has become a focal point of conservative criticism.

Online nickname war

Posts from right-leaning users have urged others to “call her Becky,” mocking her branding as “Mikie” and tying it to accusations of fraudulence.

The term also carries cultural baggage: in popular slang, “Becky” has been used as a derogatory label for a privileged or out-of-touch white woman. Conservatives appear to be repurposing the term against Sherrill, pairing it with attacks on her immigration and gender policy stances.

The online campaign escalated alongside revelations that the National Archives released unredacted files from Sherrill’s time at the Naval Academy.

Those records referenced a 1993 cheating investigation in which she was named. Critics, including Republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli, have pointed to the case as evidence of dishonesty.

Records leak and campaign clash

Sherrill has said she was cleared in the cheating case and left the Navy with an honorable discharge after a decade of service. Her campaign condemned the leak as politically motivated and demanded an inquiry, linking it to Ciattarelli allies and former Trump administration officials.

Still, she has not released any proof of her innocence in light of the scandal.

Republican groups have broadened the attack, accusing her of backing President Biden’s agenda “100%” and labeling her an “abortion extremism” supporter. Viral posts have mixed these charges with the “Becky” nickname, branding her both personally and politically untrustworthy.

Four indicted after violent home invasion and car theft in Fair Lawn

By Local News Report

Indictment handed down in brazen NJ home invasion auto theft

Trenton, NJ – Four men have been indicted on a slate of charges connected to a violent home invasion and car theft in Fair Lawn that left a homeowner injured and two luxury vehicles stolen, state officials announced Monday.

Daniel Chipelo, 21, of Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania; Kasib Higgs, 20, of Old Bridge; John Duncan, 20, of Kearny; and Jason Cathcart, 22, of Kearny, were indicted by a state grand jury on September 17. The charges include conspiracy, first-degree home invasion burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, theft of property, aggravated assault, and the use of a juvenile to commit a crime.

Prosecutors said the crime took place at about 4:28 a.m. on March 1, when the homeowners were asleep and awoke to the sound of their front door being forced open. The suspects allegedly stole a black 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a black 2023 BMW X5, together valued at more than $75,000, while also taking items from inside the home and vehicles.

One homeowner attempted to block the suspects’ escape and was nearly struck by the stolen vehicles. He dove out of the way but suffered cuts to his knees and legs.

Investigators from the New Jersey State Police Auto Theft Task Force linked the defendants to the crime through surveillance, clothing, and cellphone data. Authorities also allege that all four employed a juvenile in carrying out the theft, with Cathcart accused of driving one of the stolen cars.

Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin, the Division of Criminal Justice, and the Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor emphasized that the case highlights the dangers of escalating auto theft crimes. Officials said the stolen vehicles could have been used for additional crimes or fraudulent insurance claims.

The defendants face decades in prison if convicted. First-degree charges carry 10 to 20 years, second-degree five to 10 years, and third-degree up to five years.

The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Attorney General Jana Robinson under the supervision of the Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor.

—

Key Points

  • Four men indicted in Fair Lawn home invasion and theft of two luxury vehicles worth $75,000
  • A homeowner was injured while trying to stop the suspects from fleeing

Teen with six warrants busted on I-24 with gun and drugs

by Shore News Network September 29, 2025
By Shore News Network

Nashville, TN – An 18-year-old with a history of violent domestic cases is being held on $13,000 bond after a traffic stop Wednesday night on I-24 East near Briley Parkway led to his arrest.

Brandon Grigsby was riding in a BMW when detectives found marijuana and a pistol inside the car. He had six outstanding warrants, including indictments tied to domestic violence assaults earlier this year.

Teen with six warrants busted on I-24 with gun and drugs

Key Points

  • Brandon Grigsby, 18, jailed after BMW stop on I-24 East Wednesday night.
  • He faced four prior indictments for domestic violence assaults, later dismissed.
  • Detectives seized a handgun and 40 grams of marijuana during the arrest.

History of violence

Court records show Grigsby was indicted for an aggravated assault in May after his pregnant girlfriend reported he choked, kicked, and tried to stab her. She told investigators he fired shots in the air and threatened to return with more gunfire once forced from the home. He was arrested the next day, but charges were dismissed because the witness was unavailable.

In June, Grigsby allegedly threw bleach into a family member’s eyes during an argument, leading to two more indictments. That case was also dismissed for the same reason.

Arrest at family home

On Wednesday night, Metro’s TITANS Unit located Grigsby at his mother’s house on Holland Lane. He got into the passenger seat of a BMW driven by a 16-year-old. When detectives attempted a stop, the driver fled.

The car was disabled and both were taken into custody. Officers found 40 grams of marijuana and an ID in a backpack in the backseat, along with a handgun on the floorboard.

Grigsby now faces charges for aggravated assault, domestic assault, harassment, theft, felony gun possession, and drug possession. The 16-year-old driver was charged in Juvenile Court with felony evading arrest.

The BMW ride ended with both behind bars.

The $84,565 win comes from a $1 per draw ticket. Lottery officials said the progressive feature continues to grow with every game until it is hit.

The New Jersey Lottery encourages players to check their tickets carefully to see if they are winners.

Man arrested after dog found inside vacant Columbus apartment

by Shore News Network September 29, 2025
By Shore News Network

Columbus, OH – A routine call about a stray dog led Columbus police to a far stranger discovery last week: a man secretly living inside a vacant apartment.

Around 6:41 p.m. on Sept. 23, officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Kingsford Road after a maintenance worker reported finding a dog inside what was supposed to be an empty unit. When police arrived, they secured the animal and quickly realized the apartment’s first-floor windows had been left open.

Key Points

  • Officers responded to a call about a dog found inside a vacant apartment.
  • Witnesses said a man had been secretly living there for weeks.
  • James Watts was arrested and charged with burglary.

Dog leads officers to trespasser

As officers investigated, they were approached by James Watts, who claimed the dog was his and said he had been searching for it. But witnesses at the scene told police a different story — that Watts had been staying in the vacant residence for several weeks.

Burglary charge filed

Watts was taken into custody and booked at the Franklin County Jail on a single count of burglary. The dog was removed from the apartment and placed in safe custody.

A simple welfare check for a dog ended with an unexpected arrest and a vacant property exposed as an improvised home.

New Jersey Congressmen Demand Answers in Wake of Mikie Sherrill’s Naval Academy Cheating Scandal

Sherrill pressed to release Navy scandal records after Jersey reps demand answers

Trenton, NJ – Three New Jersey Republicans are calling on Rep. Mikie Sherrill to release long-sealed documents tied to her admitted role in the 1994 United States Naval Academy cheating scandal, saying voters deserve full transparency after new revelations surfaced last week.

In a joint statement issued Monday, Reps. Chris Smith, Jeff Van Drew, and Tom Kean Jr. urged Sherrill to authorize the immediate release of her academic, disciplinary, and investigatory records. The demand follows a New Jersey Globe report detailing her past denials and later acknowledgment of punishment in the case.

Key Points

  • Reps. Smith, Van Drew, and Kean Jr. are pressing Sherrill for full disclosure of Naval Academy records.
  • Sherrill admitted she was disciplined in the 1994 cheating scandal after initially denying involvement.
  • Republicans say voters need clarity on the scope of her violations and punishment.

The trio posed several pointed questions, including what Sherrill told investigators, what violations she committed, and what penalties she faced.

GOP calls for transparency

According to the lawmakers, only Sherrill can authorize the release of her sealed records, and they argued that doing so would “put this matter to rest.” They said the lack of disclosure raises concerns about whether her account matches the official record.

“If those sealed disciplinary records match Representative Sherrill’s current explanation, we are unsure why she would refuse to release the records,” the statement read.

Scandal resurfaces decades later

Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot, first addressed the matter publicly in 2018 when reports linked her to the cheating scandal. At the time, she admitted to being disciplined after previously denying any involvement. The issue has resurfaced in recent days as Republicans intensify scrutiny ahead of her reelection campaign.

Sherrill’s office has not yet responded to the latest demands.

Democrat Dover mayor backs Jack Ciattarelli in shunning Mikie Sherrill

by Shore News Network September 29, 2025
By Shore News Network

Dover, NJ – In a surprise political shift, Dover Mayor James P. Dodd, a Democrat, has formally endorsed Republican Jack Ciattarelli for governor — a move that delivers a symbolic blow to Rep. Mikie Sherrill in her own congressional district.

Dodd, who leads the Morris County town carried by Vice President Kamala Harris by 14 points in 2020, joined a small circle of Democratic local leaders willing to publicly back Ciattarelli. The endorsement underscores Ciattarelli’s efforts to court bipartisan support in a state where Democrats hold a voter registration advantage.

Key Points

  • Dover Mayor James P. Dodd, a Democrat, endorsed Republican Jack Ciattarelli for governor.
  • Dover sits inside Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s district, highlighting local political fallout.
  • Dodd has a history of crossing party lines, previously backing Republican Chris Christie.

History of breaking ranks

Dodd’s decision is not unprecedented. In 2013, he and Garfield Deputy Mayor Tana Raymond — another Democrat — endorsed Republican Gov. Chris Christie’s re-election campaign. Raymond had also backed Christie over Democrat Jon Corzine in 2009. Their moves highlighted frustration with statewide Democratic leadership at the time.

Still, Dodd’s endorsement of Ciattarelli is likely to draw sharper attention given its timing and location. Dover’s vote share has leaned reliably Democratic in statewide contests, making the public support of its mayor a political prize for Ciattarelli.

Impact on Sherrill’s backyard

The endorsement lands in Sherrill’s own congressional district, where she is already navigating scrutiny over her Naval Academy past and facing Republican efforts to erode her standing among moderates. Ciattarelli, who nearly defeated Gov. Phil Murphy in 2021, has framed his campaign around attracting crossover Democrats and independents.

The move gives him a headline-making win in Morris County — and a reminder that party loyalty in New Jersey politics is far from absolute.
