Criminals Will Soon Be Identified as Justice-Impacted Individuals Under Social Justice Reforms

by Shore News Network May 30, 2024
By Shore News Network

TRENTON, NJ – Criminal justice reform in New Jersey has not only been dangerous, but damaging to the real victims of violent crimes throughout the state. Now, a bill in Illinois could set the trend nationwide to reclassify criminals and offenders as “justice-impacted individuals”.

Knowing the New Jersey legislature and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, it won’t be long until New Jersey follows suit on the mad dash toward criminal justice reform idiocracy.

Democratic legislators are set to introduce House Bill 4409, which aims to amend the Illinois Crime Reduction Act of 2009. The proposed amendment involves a significant change in terminology: renaming “offenders” as “justice-impacted individuals.” This change reflects a broader trend towards language that focuses on the rehabilitative rather than punitive aspects of the criminal justice system.

The rationale behind this linguistic shift is to reframe how individuals involved in the criminal justice system are perceived. Rather than labeling them strictly as offenders or criminals, which carries a heavily stigmatized connotation, the term “justice-impacted individuals” suggests that these people are affected by their interactions with the justice system. This could imply that they are not only perpetrators but also potentially victims of systemic issues within the justice framework.

Critics might argue that this is merely a semantic change that does not address the root causes of crime or lead to tangible improvements in public safety or rehabilitation. However, supporters believe that changing the language can help reduce the stigma associated with criminal records, which often hinders reintegration into society and the job market.

This legislative move is part of a larger discussion on criminal justice reform, focusing on how societal and systemic factors influence criminal behavior and how the system addresses or perpetuates these issues. The debate is likely to continue as the bill moves through the legislative process.

Biden Says Food Prices Down 0.2% in Past Year, Touting Success After 25% Increase

by Shore News Network May 30, 2024
By Shore News Network

Amid ongoing debates over inflation and rising living costs, Jared Bernstein, Chair of the U.S. Council of Economic Advisers, defended the administration’s economic strategies during a recent discussion on gas and food prices. Bernstein pointed out that, according to data from the travel organization AAA, the current average gas price of $3.58 per gallon remains unchanged from the same period last year.

From 2020 to 2024, food prices have increased an average of 26%, according to figures released by the USDA.

Bernstein acknowledged the economic pressures families continue to face but emphasized the administration’s commitment to those most affected by high living costs.

He noted a modest decrease in grocery prices, which have fallen by 0.2% in the last month, suggesting some relief for consumers. This data is part of a broader argument by the administration that, despite high prices, there is evidence of stability and slight improvement in certain sectors.

The administration’s approach focuses on maintaining steady progress and managing the economic challenges, reinforcing its dedication to supporting American families during fluctuating economic times.

New Jersey Loses $175 Million in Failed Murphy Offshore Wind Energy Project Settlement

by Shore News Network May 30, 2024
By Shore News Network

TRENTON, NJ—New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced that the state has secured a $125 million settlement from Danish energy company Ørsted. This agreement comes after Ørsted decided to halt development on the Ocean Wind 1 and Ocean Wind 2 projects.

Originally, Murphy promised New Jersey was to receive $300 million to support its offshore wind sector, highlighting a significant shortfall in the settlement amount.

Governor Murphy expressed disappointment in Ørsted’s decision to abandon the projects, which he described last year as “outrageous” and damaging to the company’s credibility. The settlement funds are earmarked to further New Jersey’s clean energy initiatives as outlined in the state’s Energy Master Plan.

In addition to the settlement, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) announced a pause in moving forward with the Second State Agreement Approach for offshore wind transmission.

On Halloween day last year, Murphy said, ““Today’s decision by Orsted to abandon its commitments to New Jersey is outrageous and calls into question the company’s credibility and competence. As recently as several weeks ago, the company made public statements regarding the viability and progress of the Ocean Wind 1 project. In recognition of the challenges inherent in large and complex projects, my Administration in partnership with legislative leadership insisted upon important protections that ensure New Jersey will receive $300 million to support the offshore wind sector should Orsted’s New Jersey projects fail to proceed. I have directed my Administration to review all legal rights and remedies and to take all necessary steps to ensure that Orsted fully and immediately honors its obligations.”

New Jersey Loses $175 Million in Failed Murphy Offshore Wind Energy Project Settlement

This pause allows the NJBPU to evaluate the implications of the new Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s Order 1920 and to engage in the ongoing reforms by regional grid operator PJM Interconnection, aimed at optimizing long-term transmission planning and cost-efficiency.

This settlement concludes the legal disputes between New Jersey and Ørsted concerning the Ocean Wind Projects, with both parties agreeing to release claims related to the development stoppage. The decision underscores the complexities of advancing large-scale energy projects and the importance of safeguarding state interests in renewable energy ventures.

Ocean County’s First-Time Homebuyers Program Boosts Home Ownership Dreams

by Lifestyle and Family May 30, 2024
By Lifestyle and Family

OCEAN COUNTY, NJ—The First-Time Homebuyers Program in Ocean County has successfully assisted 585 families in achieving their home ownership dreams, according to the Ocean County Board of Commissioners. This initiative, celebrated especially during National Homeownership Month in June, has been a cornerstone in helping low- and moderate-income residents secure a place they can call home.

The program, funded annually by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), offers essential financial support through a $15,000 deferred loan for down payments and closing costs, which is forgivable after six years. Barbara “Bobbi” Jo Crea, Director of the Ocean County Board of Commissioners, emphasized the significance of the program’s timing and its crucial role in supporting community members.

Eligibility for the program requires applicants to meet HUD income standards, demonstrate steady employment, and possess adequate income and credit scores. Participants are also required to contribute at least 3 percent towards the down payment and attend HUD-Certified Homeownership Education workshops.

Since its inception, the program has facilitated the purchase of $82.4 million worth of property with $5.4 million in HUD funds. Looking ahead, the program anticipates serving up to 25 new applicants over the next year. With the average home price in Ocean County rising from around $190,000 in 2020 to the current HUD maximum purchase price of $438,000 for a single-family home, the program’s $15,000 subsidy has become increasingly significant.

O.C.E.A.N., Inc. has administered the program since 1997, providing services including client intake, eligibility screening, and coordination with real estate agents, lenders, and attorneys. For more information, interested individuals can visit the Ocean County Planning Department website or contact O.C.E.A.N., Inc. directly at 732-244-5333.

Metal Slug, a title synonymous with the golden era of arcade gaming, continues to evoke nostalgia and excitement among fans, decades after its initial release. Created by SNK in 1996, this run-and-gun platformer captured the hearts of gamers with its frenetic pace, charming pixel art, and thrilling gameplay.

Why Metal Slug Became an Arcade Legend

Metal Slug stood out for several reasons. Its richly detailed, hand-drawn graphics were a visual feast, distinguishing itself from the more common polygonal styles of the mid-90s. Each frame of animation brimmed with character, making even enemies lovable in their quirky demise. The game’s setting, blending historical, contemporary, and fantastical elements, offered a playful yet chaotic backdrop perfect for its fast-paced action.

It was also popular on the elusive and expensive Neo Geo console.

The cooperative gameplay aspect of Metal Slug was a major draw. The game allowed two players to team up, fostering a shared gaming experience that was both competitive and cooperative. This camaraderie, paired with the game’s notorious difficulty, made every playthrough a thrilling challenge that tested friendships and skills alike.

Metal Slug’s Lasting Appeal and Modern-Day Legacy

Despite the decline of traditional arcades, Metal Slug lives on through emulators like MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator). MAME allows enthusiasts to relive their cherished arcade experiences on modern computers, preserving the authentic feel of the original gameplay. This accessibility has introduced Metal Slug to new generations and maintained its popularity among long-time fans.

Today, Metal Slug’s legacy is celebrated not just for its nostalgia but also for its timeless playability. The game is often praised for its simple yet deep mechanics. Players must navigate through varied levels, using a mix of weapons, from simple pistols to the ludicrously overpowered Heavy Machine Gun and the whimsical Rocket Launcher. The “power-up” system, coupled with vehicles like tanks and camels equipped with heavy artillery, adds layers of strategic depth and replay value.

The Joy of Playing Metal Slug

What made Metal Slug genuinely fun to play was its perfect balance of challenge and reward. The game demanded precision and quick reflexes, rewarding players with satisfying explosions and humorous animations. The constant barrage of enemies and the epic boss fights kept adrenaline levels high from start to finish.

Metal Slug’s sound design also contributed significantly to its atmosphere. The soundtrack’s catchy tunes and the memorable sound effects of weapons and explosions enriched the immersive experience.

In an era dominated by high-definition graphics and complex narratives, Metal Slug remains a testament to the enduring appeal of simple, well-crafted gameplay. Its continued relevance in the gaming community, powered by nostalgia and the capabilities of modern emulators, ensures that Metal Slug’s legacy will endure, entertaining gamers for years to come.

Whether it’s a trip down memory lane or a new discovery, Metal Slug continues to be a joyful, chaotic adventure that captures the true spirit of arcade gaming.

BROOKLYN, NY—Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, in collaboration with New York City Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban, announced today the indictment of 18 alleged gang members involved in a series of violent crimes, including two murders and multiple shootings that injured ten people, eight of whom were innocent bystanders. The individuals charged are purported members of the H-Block/Billy’s Gang and Gates Fam street gangs.

These indictments detail a conspiracy to commit murder, weapon possession, and other related charges across three separate legal actions. This crackdown is part of a broader strategy to address youth violence and gang involvement, particularly as the city approaches the summer months—a period often marked by a spike in violent incidents.

District Attorney Gonzalez emphasized the significance of the operation as a measure to combat the disturbing trend of youth involvement in violent activities and reiterated his office’s commitment to pursuing justice for the affected communities. “Shooting guns in our streets cannot and will not be tolerated,” stated Gonzalez. He highlighted the comprehensive approach of holding perpetrators accountable while also engaging youth in programs to deter them from gang affiliations.

Police Commissioner Caban acknowledged the focused efforts of the NYPD and their law enforcement partners in identifying and dismantling gang activities that contribute to citywide violence. He praised the dedication of NYPD investigators and the cooperation with the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office in addressing these complex challenges.

Echoing the sentiments of his colleagues, New York City Mayor Eric Adams underscored the city’s resolve against violence and chaos, stressing the administration’s commitment to public safety and law enforcement. “New York City will not tolerate the reckless endangerment of those who choose a path of violence and chaos,” Mayor Adams declared, commending the collaborative law enforcement efforts that led to these indictments.

This operation sends a clear message to those involved in gang violence that their actions will face severe consequences, ensuring that New York City remains a safe environment for all residents.

Manhattan Man Indicted for Manufacturing 3D-Printed Ghost Guns

by Shore News Network May 30, 2024
By Shore News Network

NEW YORK, NY—Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., and New York City Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban have announced the indictment of 29-year-old Roberto Guerrero for the illegal manufacture and possession of ghost guns, including two fully operable 3D-printed assault weapons, in his Harlem apartment. Guerrero is also accused of test-firing these weapons in Central Park.

Guerrero faces multiple charges, including Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second and Third Degrees and Manufacture, Transport, Disposition and Defacement of Weapons. The indictment, issued by the New York State Supreme Court, comes after a long-term investigation under the Office’s Ghost Gun Initiatives, involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

During a court-authorized search on March 20, 2024, at approximately 6:10 a.m., police recovered a 3D-printed pistol loaded with ammunition, an assault weapon-style pistol, multiple pistol lower receivers, and a large capacity ammunition feeding device, along with a 3D printer and other manufacturing supplies. These items were found unsecured in Guerrero’s residence, where his children and wife, the latter also charged with assisting in the operation, were present.

The indictment highlights the growing concern over 3D-printed weapons, which are becoming increasingly sophisticated and difficult to trace. District Attorney Bragg emphasized the commitment of his office to addressing gun violence, noting the importance of continued vigilance against the proliferation of ghost guns. Commissioner Caban praised the efforts of the NYPD and their partners in preventing potential violence from these untraceable weapons.

Guerrero’s activities included purchasing and selling gun parts online under various aliases and advertising his designs through self-produced videos, which included recordings of him firing the weapons in Central Park.

This case underscores the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces with the advancement of technology and the ease of accessing materials to produce untraceable firearms. The authorities continue their efforts to tackle this issue head-on to ensure public safety.

Warren Township Man Charged with Insurance Fraud

by Shore News Network May 30, 2024
By Shore News Network

WARREN TWP., NJ—Somerset County authorities have arrested 36-year-old Rajinder S. Randhawa of Raspberry Trail, Warren Township, on charges of insurance fraud. Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald, Chief of County Detectives Francisco Roman, Jr., and Warren Township Police Chief Robert Ferreiro announced the arrest, which took place on Thursday, May 9, 2024.

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor, initially alerted the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Special Investigations Unit to potential fraudulent activities by a fuel delivery trucking company owned by Randhawa. The company allegedly misrepresented the garaging location of its eight trucks on a commercial auto policy application.

An insurance company investigator, conducting a preliminary audit, discovered discrepancies in the July 2023 application, where the trucks were listed as being garaged in Bridgewater. However, the investigation revealed that the trucks were actually located in Linden, New Jersey. By falsely claiming Bridgewater as the location, Randhawa significantly reduced the premium owed, with the difference amounting to approximately $231,431 over six months.

As a result of the investigation, Randhawa was charged with 3rd Degree Insurance Fraud and was released pending a court appearance. The case continues to underscore the ongoing efforts by local and state authorities to combat insurance fraud in the region.

Massachusetts Fugitive “The Bad Breath Rapist” Captured in California

by Shore News Network May 30, 2024
By Shore News Network

BOSTON, MA —Tuen Lee, infamously dubbed “The Bad Breath Rapist” due to his identifiable halitosis, has been apprehended in Diablo, California, nearly two decades after his initial crime. Lee was convicted in absentia for a 2005 rape and home invasion in Quincy, Massachusetts, but fled before the verdict.

The breakthrough in this long-stalled case came in early 2024 when investigators received a crucial tip leading them to a multi-million dollar home owned by a female flower shop owner in Diablo. Surveillance images and social media activity suggested Lee was living under an assumed identity at this location.

On May 28, 2024, a joint operation involving the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section (VFAS) Metro Team, the U.S. Marshals Service Boston, Quincy Police Department, and the Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force of Northern California was conducted.

Lee and a woman were observed leaving the residence and were subsequently stopped by Danville Police. Lee initially gave a false name but confessed his true identity under further questioning. His identity was confirmed through fingerprint analysis.

Lee’s companion, who had been with him for 15 years, was reportedly unaware of his criminal past.

Lee has been booked at Danville PD and is awaiting extradition to Massachusetts to face justice for his crimes.

By Shore News Network

DOVER, DE—Delaware State Police have arrested Paul Brand, a 42-year-old resident of Smyrna, Delaware, following a disturbance at a Royal Farms store in Dover. The incident, which included drug offenses and resisting arrest, occurred on the evening of Monday, May 28, 2024.

Responding to a call at around 7:15 PM at the Royal Farms located at 5456 North Dupont Highway, a trooper found Brand causing a commotion in the men’s restroom. He had reportedly been yelling and screaming for over an hour.

Upon making contact, the trooper searched Brand and discovered a clear plastic sandwich bag containing numerous small plastic orange capsules filled with a white powdery substance.

The situation escalated when Brand resisted arrest, failing to comply with verbal commands and striking the trooper. During the confrontation, Brand attempted to dispose of the evidence by flushing the capsules down the toilet. He was subsequently subdued with the use of a taser and taken into custody.

Brand was charged with tampering with physical evidence, resisting arrest—both felonies—possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, disorderly conduct, and criminal trespass. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 7 and released on his own recognizance.
