Seaside Heights Shops Closed Out of Fear of Safety, What’s Next for the Jersey Shore?

by Conservative Times May 29, 2024
By Conservative Times

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NJ – Seaside Heights Mayor Anthony Vaz and the Seaside Heights Police Department dealt with large crowds, unruly teens, and pandemonium after a false report of a gunshot this past Memorial Day weekend.

According to police, nearly 100 people, including teens and adults, were arrested over the weekend. Police reported that 18 juveniles and 72 adults were arrested.

A report of gunfire sent people running in panic as police, armed with assault rifles charged up the boardwalk, ready for an active shooter response. Luckily. it was a false alarm.

That action prompted the borough to enforce its 10 pm juvenile curfew strictly. But it was too late.

According to an interview with Mayor Anthony Vaz, some local boardwalk shopkeepers were on edge and closed for the night. According to Vaz, they were concerned about their safety and about shoplifting.

Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy commended his department and supporting agencies for responding to the incident.

“There were reports of shots fired on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights,” Mastronardy said. “This was a false report and did not happen Thanks to our partners for assisting in assuring the safety of all was carried out during a very busy evening. Social media at times can spread information which is not true- However we have a responsibility to make sure the public is safe.”

Now Vaz and other mayors along the Jersey Shore have a very difficult task ahead of them. They need to balance the new juvenile criminal justice reforms mandated by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and balance the need for public order and safety. At the same time, they have to figure out a way to ensure vacationing families that their hard-earned once-a-summer trip to the Jersey Shore won’t be spoiled by out-of-control teens who know the local police departments have been handcuffed by the governor’s office to enforce the laws of their community and to maintain peace and order.

Wildwood Mayor Says Civil Unrest Threat Prompted Shutdown of Famous Boardwalk

by Shore News Network May 29, 2024
By Shore News Network

WILDWOOD, NJ—In response to an overwhelming number of service calls during the Memorial Day weekend, the City of Wildwood Police Department, along with city officials, managed a significant uptick in disturbances primarily caused by large groups of young adults and juveniles.

Mayor Ernie Troiano, Jr., Commissioner of Public Safety Steve Mikulski, and Commissioner Krista McConnell detailed the sequence of events starting from Saturday evening, May 25, stating that things were starting to get out of hand in the city.

On Saturday, the police department began receiving numerous calls, leading to the issuance of mutual aid requests across Cape May County.

At certain points, the incidents were so high that the police could not respond to some calls. By Sunday, May 26, local authorities, advised by Chief Joseph Murphy and the Emergency Management Coordinator, declared emergent conditions that threatened public health and safety. A local disaster emergency was subsequently declared early Monday, May 27, as conditions worsened despite efforts to control the situation.

Mayor Ernie Troiano, Jr. stated, “Wildwood will not tolerate unruly, undisciplined, unparented children nor will we stand by while the laws of the state tie the hands of the police. We wholeheartedly support the City of Wildwood Police Department in protecting this community from these nuisance crowds on our boardwalk and in the city.”

The declaration included a temporary closure of the city’s boardwalk and was aimed at quelling the unrest and maintaining safety. This state of emergency was effective in handling the incidents and was lifted once the situation was under control. City officials expressed their gratitude for the cooperation from the public and the assistance from various law enforcement agencies.

Mayor Troiano emphasized the city’s zero-tolerance policy towards disruptive behavior, particularly from young individuals without proper supervision. Commissioner Mikulski noted that preparations had been made in anticipation of Sunday night’s events, which facilitated timely and decisive action.

Commissioner of Public Safety Steve Mikulski continued, “We had measures in place ahead of the Sunday night crowds so that the police department could take these preemptive actions should the need arise. Unfortunately, the crowds necessitated the state of emergency to which our police department and other responding departments worked together to maintain order in the city.”

Commissioner McConnell acknowledged the ongoing support for the police force in managing such disturbances and mentioned collaboration with state officials, including Senator Testa, to address these issues comprehensively.

Ocean City Mayor Says Juvenile Delinquency on Boardwalk Will Not Be Tolerated

by Government News May 29, 2024
By Government News

OCEAN CITY, NJ – After a wild weekend at the Jersey Shore, one local mayor affected by the mayhem has had enough.

Ocean City Mayor Jay Jillian is dealing with recovering his shore town after a weekend full of fights, disorderly conduct, arrests, shoplifting, and the stabbing of a teen on his boardwalk.

“As in recent years and in other shore towns, Ocean City experienced a number of issues related to large crowds of teens on the Boardwalk, fights, shoplifting, and disorderly conduct during the start of Memorial Day Weekend,” Jillian said. “I understand the impact that this behavior has on all of our residents, guests and business owners, and I want to assure everybody that Ocean City will not tolerate it.”

Scenes of teens running, fighting with police, fighting with each other, and causing a disturbance flooded social media this week, leaving many families second-guessing their Jersey Shore vacations.

Jillian says he and city officials are working closely with the police and will not tolerate future disturbances.

“Our officers made multiple arrests last night and were able to quickly restore order to the Boardwalk once the teens involved in these incidents were removed. We have a highly qualified team of officers on the boardwalk and throughout town, and they will enforce all laws to the fullest,” he added. “Ocean City will always be welcoming to all guests, but I want to send a clear message to parents and to teens: “If you don’t want to behave, don’t come.”

Phil Murphy Says Jersey Shore Did Not Have Chaotic Memorial Day Weekend

by Shore News Network May 29, 2024
By Shore News Network

TOMS RIVER, NJ – Large crowds of unruly teens, 90 arrested in Seaside Heights, fights along the boardwalks, the smell of marijuana drenching the air, a stabbing in Ocean City, and a disaster declaration in Wildwood.

According to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, there’s nothing to see here.

Murphy, who spent his weekend at his governor’s mansion in Island Beach State Park said this weekend was a huge success for the state.

Despite the imagery on news broadcasts across the country showing teens running scared, cops running down the boardwalk with ‘assault rifles’, fights, arrests, and yes, a teen stabbing, things were good.

“The Shore did not have a chaotic weekend,” he said. “There were three very serious incidents. But this was overwhelmingly a huge Memorial Day. [We] take all of those incidents very, very seriously, as I know the communities do.” He noted he personally spoke with the mayors of all three towns.”

Seaside Heights Mayor Anthony Vaz today said many shopkeepers along the boardwalk voluntarily shut their doors because of the threat of violence.

“The weekend was overwhelmingly successful, including overwhelmingly in those towns,” he said. “I was on a couple hours ago with the Wildwood mayor, and he said, ‘We had a fantastic weekend. We happened to have this overrunning of a bunch of teenagers.’”

Murphy predicted this summer is going to be the “biggest summer ever.”

Columbian Sentenced to 25-50 Years for Deadly Nightclub Shooting

by Shore News Network May 29, 2024
By Shore News Network

LANCASTER, PA – Tyler Wilson, 30, from Columbia, has been sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison for the fatal shooting of 25-year-old Jatavis Scott. The sentencing occurred Tuesday by Lancaster County Judge Thomas Sponaugle, following Wilson’s conviction of third-degree murder and other charges.

The incident, which led to Scott’s death, unfolded in the parking lot of the former Club Twenty3 in Manheim Township on March 19, 2022, around 1:23 AM. The confrontation began with a verbal altercation inside the club, escalating to a physical fight outside, captured on witness phone videos and club surveillance that showed Wilson shooting Scott at close range.

Prosecutors, including Assistant District Attorney Mark Fetterman, argued for a minimum 33-year sentence, emphasizing the loss experienced by Scott’s family, who traveled from Mississippi for the trial. Defense arguments citing Wilson’s potential for rehabilitation and strong family support influenced the request for a lighter sentence starting at 17 ½ years.

Judge Sponaugle remarked on the senselessness of the violence, noting that the evidence showed a situation that should have ended without escalation. The verdict reflects the gravity of an act that not only ended Scott’s life but significantly altered Wilson’s future.

Virginia Tech Firm Says “Whites Only” Job Posting Done by Angry Employee

by Shore News Network May 29, 2024
By Shore News Network

RICHMOND, VA – Arthur Grand Technologies Inc., a Virginia-based IT services firm, has reached a settlement with the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Justice Department over a controversial job advertisement. The ad specified that applicants must be “only US Born Citizens [white],” sparking significant backlash and allegations of violating the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, religion, and other attributes.

The settlement, disclosed last week, does not include an admission or denial of wrongdoing by Arthur Grand Technologies. However, the Justice Department maintains that the advertisement breached federal law. The CEO, Sheik Rahmathullah, attributed the post to a “rogue employee” and claimed it was meant to embarrass the company.

Under the settlement terms, Arthur Grand Technologies agreed to compensate 31 affected individuals with $31,000 each and will pay a fine of $7,500. The firm must also implement training for its staff on the INA, revise its hiring policies, and undergo departmental monitoring.

Further obligations set by a separate agreement with the Labor Department include allowing inspections and providing access to employment documents, along with a prohibition on retaliatory actions against individuals involved in the investigation or complaint process.

Woman Discovers Her Presumed-Euthanized Puppy is Alive and Up for Adoption

by Local News Report May 29, 2024
By Local News Report

BALTIMORE, MD – Kristie Pereira was shocked to find her once desperately ill puppy, believed to have been euthanized, alive and up for adoption nearly a year after she relinquished him to a Maryland shelter.

In late 2022, Pereira adopted a 2-month-old hound mix named Beau from the Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation in Maryland for $450. The puppy quickly became a cherished companion, staying by her side as she worked from home. However, Beau soon exhibited health issues that a veterinarian attributed to a probable neurological condition, although liver problems were also suspected.

Despite treatment efforts, Beau’s condition deteriorated, leading Pereira to make the heart-wrenching decision to surrender him for euthanasia due to what seemed to be an untreatable condition.

Imagine her astonishment when she discovered that Beau was not only alive but also available for adoption from the very organization from which he was initially adopted. Pereira, now residing in San Antonio, is seeking to reclaim her beloved pet, stating, “I have a lot of questions, but first and foremost, I want him back with me.”

Woman Discovers Her Presumed-Euthanized Puppy is Alive and Up for Adoption

The rescue’s veterinarians discovered no neurological issues with the dog. Following diagnostic tests that identified a liver condition, the dog underwent a $7,000 surgery funded by a GoFundMe campaign and was subsequently declared healthy.

Pereira contacted the rescue to get her puppy back, and expressed her willingness to reimburse the surgery costs to reclaim her dog, but faced significant resistance. The interactions with the rescue’s staff were fraught with accusations of abandonment and negligence, which Pereira found deeply upsetting.

A spokesperson for the rescue, defended their decision not to return Beau to Pereira, citing policy against rehoming animals to previous owners who surrendered them. The rescue maintains that their priority is to save dogs from euthanasia and ensure they are safe for community adoption.

The matter has left Pereira without recourse, as the rescue refuses to reconsider their stance, and Montgomery County Animal Services, which originally accepted Beau’s surrender, states they are contractually obligated to follow the rescue’s policies.

As of now, Beau remains available for adoption, while Pereira contends with the emotional and legal complexities of trying to regain custody of her former companion.

Ohio Man Who Killed Young Woman Before Her Wedding Promises Alibi

by Shore News Network May 29, 2024
By Shore News Network

HAMILTON, OH – John Carter, a 35-year-old man charged with the murder of his fiancee, Katelyn Markham, 12 years ago, will present an alibi defense at his trial next month, according to recent court filings in the Butler County Common Pleas Court. The documents state that Carter intends to prove he was not at the crime scene when Markham was allegedly murdered.

The notice, submitted on Friday, indicates that Carter was at an undisclosed location in Fairfield, Ohio, from the late evening of August 13, 2011, to the early morning of August 14, 2011—the timeframe during which Markham was killed. The specifics of the address remain redacted.

The case regained attention when Carter, who had reported Markham missing on August 14, 2011, was later accused of her murder.

He had called 911 to report her disappearance, claiming he last saw her before midnight the previous evening. Despite her keys and purse being found at her home, her cell phone was missing. The local prosecutor, Michael Gmoser, commented on the alibi, noting that defendants commonly claim presence elsewhere during the crime.

However, Fischetta resisted, becoming physically violent when restraint was attempted. Additional officers, including Officer Woodbridge and Officer Armeli, as well as units from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department, Hackensack City Police, and Wood-Ridge Police, arrived to assist in the arrest.
