Jackson Officials Announce Traffic Study to Solve Traffic Issues in Robin Estates

by Phil Stilton May 25, 2024
By Phil Stilton

Jackson Township Mayor Michael Reina, in partnership with the township council, the Jackson Township Police Department, and traffic safety and civil engineers from T&M Associates, has announced a traffic safety study to be conducted for the Robin Estates neighborhood.

Robin Estates is a small community of single-family homes with two major connector roads passing through it, Manhattan Street and Cooks Bridge Road.

Those roads are heavily traveled and shared with the Meridian healthcare building, Holman Elementary School, Johnson Park, West Lake, Winding Ways, Sixty Acres, Johns, and multiple commercial strip malls.

At the last township council meeting, residents voiced concerns about their neighborhood being used as a pass-through and’ shortcut’ to bypass the major roads and lodged multiple complaints regarding speeding drivers and even reckless drivers exceeding the speed limit through the quiet 25-mile-per-hour side streets.

“Residents came out to the meeting and let us know their concerns, and these are not new issues at all,” said Councilman Mordechai Burnstein. These are issues the town has been grappling with for years, and in the past, we’d conduct a speed enforcement operation, but once we leave, the problem comes back. We’re now looking at a permanent solution for these residents.”

Burnstein said the township officials, including himself, Council President Jennifer Kuhn, Director of Public Safety Joseph Candido, and DPW Director Shawn Bolinsky, recently met with traffic safety and civil engineers with T&M Associates.

The engineers told the township that one of the problems with the neighborhood was its design. The neighborhood was built in a 20th-century grid-style layout, which makes it easier for the community to use as a shortcut.

“We don’t design neighborhoods like this anymore,” said the engineers.

The study will examine traffic patterns and identify hot spots and problems within the design.  After data is collected, the engineers seek to deliver a plan to remedy the problems, which could involve many possibilities.

Their winning ticket, purchased from Kenwood Shell in Rosedale, proved lucky when it directed them to claim the large sum at Lottery headquarters.

“Rolling Thunder” and his wife intend to continue playing, hopeful for more wins, as they enjoy the No. 1 selling scratch-off in the Lottery lineup. Their recent gain, described by his wife as second only to their marriage in terms of great life events, will contribute towards paying bills and enhancing their comfort in retirement.

Kenwood Shell, the retailer of the winning ticket, will also receive a $900 bonus from the Maryland Lottery, celebrating the role it played in this happy outcome.

Undercover Agents Vital in Arrest of New York Crack Cocaine Dealer

By Shore News Network

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY—A drug enforcement operation led by the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office Drug Task Force has culminated in the arrest of a local man for allegedly dealing crack cocaine in Poughkeepsie.

Ronald Davis, 47, was arrested on Main Street on May 22 after the task force received multiple complaints about narcotics being sold between Hamilton and Clinton Streets. The complaints, which came from local residents and a City of Poughkeepsie official, prompted undercover agents to conduct purchases of cocaine from Davis on several occasions.

Following his arrest, a search warrant executed at Davis’s residence led to the seizure of a substantial amount of crack cocaine packaged for sale. He faces multiple charges, including Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell in the Third Degree, a Class B felony.

Davis was arraigned at the City of Poughkeepsie Court and has been remanded to the Justice and Transition Center without bail. The investigation received support from the District Attorney’s Violent Crime and Dangerous Drug Bureau.

The Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office also issued a public warning about the dangers of cocaine, which is frequently laced with fentanyl, citing it as a leading cause of overdose deaths in the area. The Drug Task Force continues to address the community’s concerns about drug-related activities.

Officials Warn of Multiple Scams Targeting Residents in New Jersey

by Shore News Network May 24, 2024
By Shore News Network

JACKSON, NJ – Officials across New Jersey have identified several scams that are targeting residents this Memorial Day weekend.

A bail scam is responsible for tens of thousands of dollars in theft statewide. Callers will say that a relative is in jail and needs bail money to get out. They will try to obtain your personal information and will use that information to deplete funds from your account.

Another scam is callers posing as police officers trying to raise money for alleged police charities.

Police also warn of virus scams and photo blackmailing scams. Both scams involve stealing your computer access and account information. In the virus scam, residents receive an email stating that they have a virus and to call tech support. That support representative will ask you to give them control of your PC. Once you do this, they access your private financial files and saved credit card data online.

In the blackmail scam, callers or emails will notify the victim that they ‘have videos and photos of them’ that they will release if they don’t pay. They don’t.

Police also warn of an increase in door-to-door salespeople and petition scams. Petition scams are in-person and online scams in which a person says, “Fill out this petition and email it to me.” The scam will normally ask for personal information such as your home address, phone number, and signature.

Scammers then take those items and try to open accounts in the unsuspecting victims’ names, depleting the accounts or committing other financial fraud.

As a reminder, any political petition distributed in New Jersey requires the petitioner to identify the individual people on the committee clearly, and those signatures need to be notarized by an actual witness. Failure to do so can lead to election law violations and penalties. Make sure you know exactly who you are giving your personal information to, why they need it, and who is responsible for safeguarding your personal information.

Political surveys and petition scams exploit people in the current heated political atmosphere. They are also sometimes phishing scams. If the petition does not have the petitioner’s name on it, don’t sign it, because it will be rejected by the municipal clerk anyway. They’re just collecting your data.
