E-Bike Safety Campaign Launched Ahead of Jersey Shore Summer Season

by Shore News Network May 25, 2024
By Shore News Network

HOWELL, NJ—With the summer tourism season kicking off at the Jersey Shore and Memorial Day weekend around the corner, local authorities are focusing on a new safety initiative.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, in collaboration with the Monmouth County Police Chiefs Association, has launched a week-long social media campaign to educate the public on the safe use of electric bicycles (e-bikes).

E-bikes, which incorporate an electric motor to assist with pedaling, are categorized into three classes based on their operation modes and speed limits. Class 1 e-bikes assist only while the rider is pedaling and stop assisting at 20 miles per hour. Class 2 models can propel the bike without pedaling, also up to 20 miles per hour. Class 3 e-bikes are similar to Class 1 but include a speedometer and a higher cutoff speed of 28 miles per hour.

The campaign will cover the implications of these classifications for e-bike use, ownership regulations, and how they are enforced by law enforcement. Contributions from the Manasquan Borough Police Department have been pivotal, providing graphics and background information to aid the campaign. This initiative underscores the growing popularity of e-bikes and the need for increased awareness of their legal and safe use during the bustling summer months.

BRIDGEPORT, CT – Jauwan Edwards, known as “Yaya,” a 26-year-old Bridgeport resident, has been sentenced to 78 months in federal prison for his involvement with the violent street gang, Original North End (O.N.E.). The sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge Kari A. Dooley, also includes three years of supervised release following his imprisonment.

The announcement was made by various officials including Vanessa Roberts Avery, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, and leaders from multiple federal and state law enforcement agencies. This case is part of a broader crackdown on gang violence in Bridgeport, involving extensive coordination among federal, state, and local authorities.

According to court documents, Edwards was actively involved in numerous criminal activities linked to the O.N.E. gang, which operates primarily in the Trumbull Gardens area. SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY – Clyves Laurent, a 30-year-old resident of Elmont, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of possessing a defaced firearm and methamphetamine outside a Mount Sinai gas station. The sentencing follows a jury trial in April that resulted in convictions for multiple felony and misdemeanor charges.

District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney highlighted the outcome as a significant victory for public safety, commending the diligent efforts of law enforcement personnel, particularly an off-duty Suffolk County Police Department detective. The detective initially spotted Laurent due to his resemblance to a suspect wanted in connection with a prior robbery.

The events unfolded in the early hours of February 11, 2023, when the detective observed Laurent acting suspiciously at a Sunoco gas station. Laurent, who was wearing a ski mask, entered the convenience store but left abruptly without making a purchase. When approached by the detective, Laurent was combative and attempted to flee as officers arrived to assist.

Upon arrest, a defaced Glock handgun was retrieved from Laurent’s groin area, and further search at the police precinct revealed he was also in possession of methamphetamine. On April 18, 2024, Laurent was convicted of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second and Third Degrees and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree.

This conviction marks a repeat offense for Laurent, who was previously convicted in 2010 for Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree. The sentence handed down on May 23, 2024, includes a subsequent five years of post-release supervision, ensuring extended oversight following the completion of his prison term.

Virginia State Police Urge Safe Driving During Busy Memorial Day Weekend

by Shore News Network May 25, 2024
By Shore News Network

RICHMOND, VA – As Memorial Day weekend coincides with graduation season this year, Virginia State Police (VSP) and AAA Mid-Atlantic are preparing for an influx of travelers. AAA forecasts a 4% increase in travel during the holiday, which could lead to congested roads across Virginia. During last year’s Memorial Day weekend, nine fatal accidents occurred statewide.

Colonel Gary T. Settle, Superintendent of VSP, stressed the importance of cautious driving. “With 294 lives lost to traffic crashes in Virginia so far this year, it is crucial for everyone to drive attentively and responsibly,” he said. Settle emphasized the need for drivers, especially teenagers and young adults, to observe speed limits, wear seat belts, avoid distractions, and never drive under the influence.

The 2024 Memorial Day weekend will also see VSP participating in Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort (C.A.R.E), a national initiative aimed at reducing traffic incidents caused by speeding, impaired driving, and non-compliance with seat belt laws. The enforcement period starts at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, May 24, and continues through midnight on Monday, May 27. Virginia troopers will be vigilant, ensuring that travelers are adhering to road safety rules.

Last year, troopers issued 771 seatbelt citations and 136 child restraint citations during the Memorial Day weekend. Additionally, nearly 5,000 speeding citations and over 1,900 citations for reckless driving were handed out. Officers also arrested 89 impaired drivers, made 169 felony arrests, and assisted 1,447 disabled motorists.

Furthermore, recent changes to Virginia’s “Move Over” law require drivers to shift over a lane or slow down when approaching any vehicle on the roadside using emergency signals or markers. This law aims to protect emergency responders and civilians alike.

Funds from issued summonses contribute directly to court fees and Virginia’s Literary Fund, which supports public school construction, technology upgrades, and teacher retirement benefits.
