Crowds Rush Off Boardwalk After Reports of ‘Gunfire’ in Seaside Heights

by Shore News Network May 25, 2024
By Shore News Network

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NJ – Crowds of people ran off the Seaside Heights boardwalk Saturday night after loud ‘bangs’ were heard. At first, police responded to the scene in force with reported gunshot claims.

Later, police determined there was no gunfire and were not able to find any evidence, according to initial reports. Police did not find evidence of a shooting as had been shared on social media earlier tonight.

Earlier in the evening, crowds of unruly teens were reported on the boardwalk, blocking traffic on nearby roads. Police have announced a 10 p.m. curfew for juveniles.

Police responded to the area but, at this time, reported no gunfire, contradicting reports circulating on social media apps. The scene at the boardwalk has since returned to normal, and large crowds continue to enjoy the first summer weekend at the Jersey Shore.

President Says Economy is Doing Great, But New Jersey Families Aren’t Seeing It

by Conservative Times May 25, 2024
By Conservative Times

TRENTON, NJ – New Jerseyans are being grinding between a ‘booming economy’ and ‘booming inflation’, but U.S. President Joe Biden continues to tell Americans, they’re doing better now than they were during President Donald Trump’s term in office.

While the American economy might be doing well on paper, that’s because companies are raking in record profits and the stock market just passed 40,000.

That reassuring news means little to most people in the middle and lower classes.

As inflation continues affecting key areas like food, energy, and housing, American sentiment on the economy is taking a hit. Despite positive Gross Domestic Product (GDP) indicators suggesting otherwise, a significant portion of the public perceives that the economy is in a downturn. Recent polling reflects this sentiment, with 56% of Americans believing that the U.S. is currently in an economic recession.

Inflation Drives Consumer Discontent

The ongoing price hikes have left consumers frustrated, a sentiment that is increasingly evident in public opinion polls. The sustained high rates of inflation are prompting some experts to suggest that interest rates may need to rise to cool off these “red hot” price pressures.

Political Repercussions

This economic discontent has political ramifications as well, with some of the public blame shifting towards presidential policies. The disconnect between statistical economic health and public perception underscores the complex nature of economic recovery and the tangible impact of inflation on everyday life.

As policymakers grapple with these challenges, the disparity between economic data and public sentiment is likely to influence upcoming political and economic strategies.

New Jersey Braces for Most Expensive Memorial Day BBQ Ever

by Shore News Network May 25, 2024
By Shore News Network

TRENTON, NJ – As barbecue season heats up, so do the prices of key ingredients, with consumers feeling the pinch in their pockets. According to recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the cost of popular barbecue staples like ground beef and steak has risen compared to last year, affecting plans for casual backyard gatherings and larger festive occasions alike.

Price Hikes in Meat

The national average price for a pound of uncooked ground beef is now $5.56, which marks a $0.31 increase from last year’s average of $5.25. Similarly, steak prices have surged to $10.75 per pound. For those looking for more budget-friendly options, pork chops and boneless chicken breasts are relatively cheaper, costing around $4.24 and $4.06 per pound, respectively.

Impact on Consumer Choices

These price increases are influencing consumer choices, pushing many towards more affordable alternatives or smaller quantities. Despite the rise in costs, the tradition of hosting barbecues continues, albeit adjusted for economic realities.

Other Costs at the Grill

The spike in meat prices isn’t the only concern for barbecue enthusiasts. The cost of other essentials like beer and other malt beverages has also seen an upward trend, further stretching budgets.

As families and friends plan their summer gatherings, the impact of these price changes is evident in shopping behaviors and menu selections, reflecting a broader trend of inflationary pressures in the food sector.

New York City Congestion Tax Set for New Jersey Commuters in 30 Days

by Shore News Network May 25, 2024
By Shore News Network

In-Depth Analysis: The Impact of New York City’s Congestion Pricing

New York City is set to implement the nation’s first congestion pricing program, starting on June 30, 2024. This initiative will charge vehicles entering the Congestion Relief Zone in Manhattan, encompassing local streets and avenues at or below 60th Street. The goal is to reduce the number of vehicles entering this highly congested area by 100,000 daily, thereby alleviating traffic and enhancing urban mobility.

Congestion pricing is projected to transform New York’s busiest district by dramatically reducing traffic, leading to cleaner air, safer streets, and better transit operations. The program is also expected to generate substantial revenue, estimated at $15 billion, which will be invested back into the city’s public transportation system to modernize subways and buses.

While the program aims to improve overall city dynamics, it could potentially increase travel costs for daily commuters and affect local businesses within the zone, as the added cost could deter customer visits. Additionally, there’s a concern about the potential increase in traffic on alternative routes as drivers may seek ways to avoid the toll zone.

New Jersey has expressed significant concerns regarding the congestion pricing plan, arguing that it disproportionately affects its residents who commute to Manhattan for work. As a result, the state has initiated legal actions against the program, aiming to challenge its fairness and seek modifications or exemptions for New Jersey commuters.

For commuters from New Jersey, the congestion pricing plan is likely to make commuting more expensive, especially for those who do not benefit from any toll credits or exemptions. Currently, crossing credits are offered for drivers who use certain tunnels to enter Manhattan, but those driving over the George Washington Bridge and heading south of 60th Street will not receive such benefits. This aspect of the plan has been a focal point of contention between New York City and New Jersey.

While New York City’s congestion pricing program has the potential to improve urban congestion and environmental quality significantly, it also poses challenges and concerns, particularly for commuters from neighboring New Jersey.

The ongoing discussions and legal challenges indicate that adjustments and negotiations may continue up until the program’s planned implementation.

Ohio Mother Killed Young Daughter with Diet of Baby Formula and Mountain Dew

by Shore News Network May 25, 2024
By Shore News Network

CLERMONT, OH—Tamara Banks, a 41-year-old Ohio mother, has been sentenced to between nine and 13.5 years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter. The sentencing follows the tragic death of her 4-year-old daughter, Karmity Hoeb, in January 2022, who died from complications related to diabetes and severe dental decay.

Banks was accused of feeding her daughter baby formula mixed with Mountain Dew, a practice which ultimately led to the child’s death and the dissolution of her teeth. The case drew significant attention due to the unusual and hazardous feeding practice. Christopher Hoeb, 53, the child’s father, also pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and awaits sentencing scheduled for June 11.

During the sentencing at Clermont County Common Pleas Court, Judge Victor Haddad criticized the lack of basic parenting skills displayed by the defendants.

“It’s hard to be a good parent but you expect at least mediocre parents, everybody should expect that,” remarked Judge Haddad. The assistant prosecutor, Clay Tharp, highlighted the severe neglect Karmity suffered, citing “baby bottle caries” as evidence of her poor care.

This condition, a type of tooth decay, was exacerbated by the daily consumption of a sugary soda through a bottle.

The details of Karmity’s suffering were further emphasized during the court hearing, with local media and residents following the case closely.
