FAIRVIEW, IL – Kevin Weaver of Fairview is still in disbelief after winning the top prize of $1 million on a scratch-off lottery ticket. The winning ticket was purchased at County Market, located at 1090 East Fort St. in Farmington, a small town about 20 miles west of Peoria.

Virginia Construction Worker Wins $1 Million in Powerball

by Shore News Network May 26, 2024
By Shore News Network

BURKE, VA – Nicholas Perez from Burke didn’t hit the $1 billion jackpot in the April 1 Powerball drawing, but he still walked away a millionaire. Perez won the second-tier prize of $1 million by matching the first five winning numbers of the Powerball.

He bought the lucky ticket at Safeway on 8646 Richmond Highway in Alexandria. His winning ticket was one of only six across the country to match the first five numbers and the only one in Virginia. The winning numbers for the draw were 19-24-40-42-56, with a Powerball number of 23. Perez used the Easy Pick option, allowing the computer to select his numbers randomly.

Retailers receive a bonus for selling high-tier winning tickets, and the Safeway that sold Perez’s ticket earned a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery. Mr. Perez, who is employed in the construction industry, has not yet planned how he will use his winnings.

Powerball draws occur at 10:59 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million, while the overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 25.

Proceeds from the Virginia Lottery go toward funding K-12 education in the state. Last fiscal year, Fairfax County, where Mr. Perez resides, benefited from over $48.5 million in Lottery funds. In Fiscal Year 2023, the Virginia Lottery contributed more than $867 million to K-12 education, accounting for about 10 percent of the state’s total K-12 school budget. For more information on Lottery contributions to education or to play games online, visit the Virginia Lottery’s website or download their app.

Alligator Escapes Petting Zoo at Missouri Middle School

by Entertainment News May 26, 2024
By Entertainment News

KANSAS CITY, MO – Authorities in Missouri are on the lookout for a small alligator that managed to escape from a petting zoo at Lakeview Middle School in Kansas City. The alligator, measuring 14 inches long, was last spotted around 11 a.m. Thursday during an event organized to celebrate the school year’s end.

The KC Pet Project reported that the alligator escaped while under the care of a third-party company hired to manage the petting zoo. Despite extensive searches of the school and surrounding areas, the alligator remains missing. Concerns are growing for the reptile’s welfare, especially since it was last seen with its mouth taped shut, rendering it unable to fend for itself.

Tori Fugate, Chief Communications Officer for the KC Pet Project, emphasized the vulnerability of the escaped alligator, noting its small size and inability to eat due to the taped mouth. The incident has also brought to light that the necessary animal show permits were not obtained by the school before hosting the event. Fugate stressed the importance of such permits to ensure the safety of both participants and animals at public events.
