Biden Admin Reportedly Set To Significantly Strengthen Tariffs On Chinese EVs, Critical Minerals

by The Daily Caller May 11, 2024
By The Daily Caller

The Biden administration is reportedly set to significantly enhance tariffs targeting Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) and other green energy-related products as early as next week, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

The administration will approximately quadruple tariffs against Chinese EVs, and U.S. officials will also increase levies against critical minerals, solar products and batteries that are sourced from China, according to the WSJ, citing people familiar with the matter. The question of Chinese tariffs has divided Biden administration policymakers, and the reportedly forthcoming tariffs are in response to growing fears that Chinese companies are beginning to ramp up green technology exports and pose a threat to American firms.

China dominates the global supply chains for the raw minerals needed to manufacture many different types of green technologies that the Biden administration is pushing to advance its sweeping climate agenda. The administration has sought cooperation with China on long-term climate goals, but its dominance of the green supply chain has also spurred considerable debate about the degree of access that cheaper Chinese products should have to the U.S. market as American green energy companies are trying to stand themselves up.

Biden’s Electric Vehicle ‘Mandate’ Might Just Be A Surprise Gift To China https://t.co/UYUgjdaPGD

— Daily Caller (@DailyCaller) April 8, 2024

The Biden administration is reportedly focused particularly on Chinese EVs, which currently face a 25% tariff, according to the WSJ. The reported forthcoming changes will increase that tariff to approximately 100%, a substantial increase reflecting the concern of some American car manufacturers and legislators that the scale of Chinese EV manufacturing could potentially overcome the 25% tariff.

“China will take all necessary measures to defend its rights and interests,” a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Friday while denouncing the reportedly forthcoming moves, the WSJ reported. The official announcement could come as early as Tuesday, though it is possible that the timeline gets pushed back.

The politics of the upcoming presidential election are also a factor in the administration’s decision on the tariffs, according to the WSJ.

Former President Donald Trump has warned of a “bloodbath” for the American auto industry if he does not win the election because he perceives President Joe Biden as too weak on China.

Trump has claimed that he would consider hitting all Chinese exports with a tariff of 60% or more if reelected, the WSJ reported. Both Trump and President Joe Biden have made an effort to highlight to working-class voters in states like Michigan and Pennsylvania that they are committed to protecting their interests from foreign competitors in China and elsewhere.

The White House, the Treasury Department, the Commerce Department and the Department of Energy did not respond immediately to requests for comment.

Dem Assault on Access to Public Records Goes Too Far, GOP Lawmakers Argue

by Traffic Reporter May 11, 2024
By Traffic Reporter

Trenton, N.J. – Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz, together with government transparency advocates, opposes the majority party’s move to dismantle New Jersey’s open public records act. The fast-tracked legislation, initially introduced in March, has been amended and released from legislative Appropriations committees this week, with a scheduled vote on Monday.

Advocates argue that the current law places a burden on records custodians, diverting them from daily operations to handle or deny OPRA requests, especially affecting municipal governments and law enforcement agencies. Critics of the bill’s amendments believe they will hinder public access to government records.

Notably, the revised bill requires specific identification of the staff members, relevant information, and timestamps for email requests, making it challenging for most requesters to provide necessary details.

The updated legislation allows agencies to take legal action against individuals whose requests disrupt operations, empowering judges to restrict access to public records. This bill also permits custodians to increase record fees and transfer the responsibility of proving production costs to the public.

Requesters taken to court will no longer receive attorney’s fees, while those making anonymous requests must waive their appeal rights.

Phil Murphy Announces Plan for New Regulations for Coastal Communities

by Conservative Times May 10, 2024
By Conservative Times

TRENTON, NJ—Governor Phil Murphy and Commissioner of Environmental Protection Shawn M. LaTourette announced today that New Jersey is set to overhaul its environmental regulations to address the increasing risks of coastal flooding, sea-level rise, and other climate-related threats. The initiative, known as the REAL (Resilient Environments and Landscapes) reforms, positions New Jersey as the first state to comprehensively update land resource protection regulations in response to the current and projected impacts of climate change.

Governor Murphy described the REAL reforms as a vital part of the state’s strategy to enhance resilience against the escalating effects of climate change. These reforms are the result of extensive scientific research and stakeholder engagement, aimed at protecting residential and commercial areas from the threats of rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and frequent flooding.

Commissioner LaTourette emphasized the administration’s leadership in addressing climate change, noting that the REAL reforms were developed through a robust, science-based process involving substantial stakeholder input over the past four years. These reforms are expected to not only improve environmental quality and flood protection but also to provide necessary tools for building resilient communities, particularly in areas most vulnerable to climate impacts.

The proposed amendments will affect New Jersey’s flood hazard, stormwater, coastal zone, and freshwater wetland regulations. A formal rule proposal is scheduled for publication in the New Jersey Register in July, followed by a 90-day public comment period and three public hearings.

Details about the REAL proposal and upcoming webinars for the public can be found at dep.nj.gov/njreal/. This initiative is part of the broader New Jersey Protecting Against Climate Threats (NJ PACT) initiative, underscoring the Murphy Administration’s commitment to fortifying the state’s defenses against the adverse effects of climate change and enhancing community resilience for the future.

Teachers Are Frustrated, Morale is Low Nationwide and in New Jersey

by Shore News Network May 10, 2024
By Shore News Network

TRENTON, NJ — A new Morning Consult poll highlights a significant decline in teacher morale, reaching a four-year low. This trend points to widespread dissatisfaction within the teaching profession, particularly emphasized in states like New Jersey. Here, teachers face challenges such as adapting curricula to new state laws, witnessing book removals, and dealing with increased student misbehavior and absences.

Despite these issues, there is a rising trend in support for school choice policies among educators. The poll indicates strong backing for Education Savings Accounts with 69% approval, open enrollment policies at 63%, and charter schools receiving 50% support. However, support for school vouchers is notably lower at 41%.

Proposed measures to address teacher dissatisfaction include salary increases and greater autonomy in the classroom, offering some hope for improving the professional environment in schools.

These findings underscore the complex landscape of K-12 education and the diverse opinions among teachers regarding potential reforms.

Rights Group Puts Target on Major Retailer That Pulled Plug on LGBTQ Clothing During Pride Month

by Conservative Times May 10, 2024
By Conservative Times

TRENTON, NJ —Kelley Robinson, President of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), has expressed disappointment in Target Corporation’s recent decision to not stock LGBTQ+-themed merchandise in some stores during Pride Month. In a statement released today, Robinson highlighted the significance of Pride merchandise and its symbolism of allyship and support for the LGBTQ+ community.

It has nothing to do with being anti LGBTQ. It has more to do with few people buying clothes from the line in recent years.

According to Bloomberg News, “Target Corp. won’t sell LGBTQ-themed merchandise in some stores during Pride Month in June, after a backlash dented revenue last year. The Minneapolis-based retailer said it plans to offer Pride products in select stores based on historical sales performance.”

“Pride merchandise means something. LGBTQ+ people are in every zip code in this country, and we aren’t going anywhere,” Robinson stated. She emphasized the growing demographic of Gen Z, noting that 30% identify as LGBTQ+, and underscored the importance of businesses visibly supporting the community.

Robinson concluded that Target’s decision could alienate LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies, potentially impacting the company’s bottom line and core values. The Human Rights Campaign, as the largest civil rights organization working towards LGBTQ+ equality in the U.S., continues to advocate for visible and genuine support of LGBTQ+ rights across all sectors.
