Investigation in Baltimore Leads To Firearms Arrest

Baltimore, MD – Last Tuesday, law enforcement officers from the Western District Action Team investigated individuals inspecting CDS in the 600 block of Cumberland Street. The investigation resulted in the arrest of two males, 33 and 30 years old, respectively.

Property shown in the accompanying picture was confiscated by investigators from the arrested men. Immediately following their arrest, the suspects, both legally forbidden from having weapons, were taken to the Central Booking Intake Facility and charged accordingly.

Now That Rutgers is Making Deals, New Jersey Law Makers Submit List of Demands

TRENTON, N.J. – Sen. Parker Space, Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia, and Assemblyman Michael Inganamort from the 24th Legislative District have called on Rutgers University to prioritize the interests of state taxpayers over radical protestors. The lawmakers have presented their demands while criticizing the university’s handling of recent protests.

Rutgers University administrators reportedly conceded to eight of the 10 demands made by protestors, such as providing scholarships for students from Gaza, establishing an Arab cultural center, and hiring more staff specializing in Middle East studies. These actions have sparked concerns among the lawmakers about the university’s approach to the situation.

During a recent state budget testimony, Rutgers University President Jonathan Holloway estimated that meeting protestors’ demands would cost around $175,000.

“The right to protest ends when you fundamentally disrupt campus safety and university operations, and I am appalled at the lopsided approach embraced by the leadership at Rutgers University. Jewish students should not be marginalized or fear for their own safety,” Fantasia (R-Sussex) said. “We are recommending the university rescind its offer to pay for protestor demands, such as tuition for ten students from Gaza. Our state university should be uplifting disadvantaged New Jerseyans and Americans. Rutgers must make a concerted effort to restore public confidence by protecting all students and taxpayer dollars.”

During state budget testimony Thursday, Rutgers University President Jonathan Holloway said meeting the demands of the protestors should cost approximately $175,000. Rutgers University receives more than $1 billion in state aid toward its annual budget.

Following the negotiations, the House Committee on Education and Workforce called on Holloway to testify on May 23. Rutgers was already facing increased federal scrutiny over acts of antisemitism on its campuses.

“A public university that agrees to shift taxpayer funding to appease agitators deserves public scrutiny. We applaud the decision of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce to compel Holloway’s appearance this month and support state legislative hearings,” Inganamort (R-Morris) said. “Rutgers must be held accountable for its disconcerting actions.”

On Thursday, Holloway confessed he did not attend the negotiations personally, but instead sent a representative from his cabinet. He also claimed the urgency of the meeting and escalating developments on campus meant he did not feel obliged to include diverse voices in the discussions.

“We are not asking a lot of Rutgers University. We want the institution to make a public commitment to their standards and do better going forward so that we can repair its reputation,” the lawmakers said.

This revelation comes as Rutgers faces heightened federal scrutiny over incidents of antisemitism on its campuses.

STAFFORD, VA—A man was arrested early Wednesday morning at the Wawa on South Gateway Drive for public intoxication and consuming alcohol in public view. The incident occurred at approximately 2:44 AM.

First Sergeant N. Zotos and Deputy J.A. Martin responded to a call from a woman who reported that a man had aggressively demanded she contact the police because he was intoxicated. Upon arrival, deputies located the suspect who not only admitted to being drunk but also continued to consume alcohol in their presence.

Due to his belligerent behavior, the man was detained and is being held pending his ability to participate in a bond hearing.

Newark Man Charged After Pointing Gun at Woman on West Main Street

NEWARK, DE—Newark Police have charged Mykai Thomas, a 22-year-old Newark resident, with aggravated menacing and related offenses following an incident on Tuesday night. Authorities responded to a call around 11:03 PM at the 100-block of West Main Street where a male reportedly pointed a firearm at a female before fleeing in a vehicle.

The investigation revealed that the female victim was walking on West Main Street when Thomas allegedly exited his vehicle, masked, and pointed what appeared to be a firearm at her.

The victim screamed and escaped the scene, while Thomas drove away.

Detectives utilized area surveillance cameras to swiftly identify Thomas’ vehicle. On Thursday, they executed a search warrant on his vehicle and discovered a firearm.

CBP officers seize $496K in cocaine in commercial truck hauling cotton candy at World Trade Bridge

LAREDO, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations officers at World Trade Bridge seized cocaine hidden within a tractor trailer hauling cotton candy. 

“Our frontline officers continue to maintain resolute vigilance and that dedication to the mission coupled with an effective use of technology resulted in the interception of a significant amount of cocaine,” said Port Director Albert Flores, Laredo Port of Entry. “Seizures like these reinforce the importance and necessity of our ongoing border security mission.”

The seizure occurred on Thursday, May 9, at World Trade Bridge, when a CBP officer referred a tractor hauling a shipment of cotton candy for secondary inspection. Following a non-intrusive inspection system examination and deployment of CBP canines, CBP officers discovered 15 packages containing a total of 37 pounds of alleged cocaine hidden within the conveyance.

The narcotics had a combined street value of $496,879.

CBP seized the narcotics. Homeland Security Investigations special agents are investigating the seizure.

San Diego Field Office seizes over $1 million worth of narcotics concealed under pedestrian-crosser clothing during the month of April

SAN DIEGO – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers assigned to the San Diego Field Office seized approximately $1,755,500.00 worth of narcotics in 12 separate incidents this past month from suspected smugglers crossing through ports of entry on foot. Narcotics were concealed under clothing and suspects ranged from 14 to 21 years of age in each of the associated incidents.

“It is evident that drug trafficking organizations continue to prey upon and exploit our youth,” said Sidney Aki, CBP Director of Field Operation for San Diego. “Juveniles need to understand that, regardless of what they hear, there are risks and consequences for smuggling narcotics. We will continue to work with our communities to raise awareness of these dangers.”

CBP officers seized a total of 3.85 pounds of cocaine, 45.17 pounds of methamphetamine, and approximately 79,300 fentanyl pills with an estimated street value of $1,755,500.00.

Suspects in these incidents were arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations for further investigation. The narcotics were seized by CBP officers. The San Diego Field Office, comprised of the San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, San Diego air and seaport, Calexico East/West, Tecate, and Andrade Ports of Entry, will continue to work closely with federal, state, and local law enforcement to crack down on drug smuggling. These efforts include youth engagement through CBP’s Border Community Liaison and School Resource Programs, as well as social media engagement and other awareness campaigns.

These seizures are the result of Operation Apollo, a holistic counter-fentanyl effort that began on October 26, 2023 in southern California, and expanded to Arizona on April 10, 2024. Operation Apollo focuses on intelligence collection and partnerships, and utilizes local CBP field assets augmented by federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial partners to boost resources, increase collaboration, and target the smuggling of fentanyl into the United States.

Senior Official Performing the Duties of Commissioner Troy A. Miller delivered the following testimony to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security FY 2025 Budget Hearing April 30:

Chairman Amodei, Ranking Member Cuellar, and Members of the Subcommittee –Thank you for the opportunity to testify today and discuss the Fiscal Year 2025 President’s Budget for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Before I begin, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the four law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty yesterday – and those gravely wounded. A senseless tragedy, and a stark reminder of the dangers our nation’s law enforcement officers face every day. Our thoughts are with their families and colleagues, and we hope for swift recovery for the injured. CBP is standing shoulder to shoulder with you all.

It is my distinct honor to represent the men and women of CBP here today. As a career law enforcement official, I can speak firsthand to the changes I have seen over the last 30 years when I started with the U.S. Customs Service. 

I can honestly tell you: I have never been more proud of the accomplishments of the CBP workforce than this past year. Just last week I had the great privilege to recognize some of their incredible achievements during our annual Commissioner’s Awards ceremony. These awards celebrate the extraordinary work CBP’s dedicated and talented people do every day – their everyday heroism.

All while facing serious challenges: from unprecedented migration flows, to increased risk in the trade environment, to the persistent threats and sophisticated tactics of transnational criminal organizations facilitating drug and human smuggling. I can assure you that the men and women of CBP are up to the challenge.

I could not be more grateful to the Members and staff of this Subcommittee for your continued support of CBP’s mission and workforce. You have ensured that we have the personnel, technology, equipment, and infrastructure to fulfill our broad responsibilities, and take care of our incredible workforce.

The Fiscal Year 2025 President’s Budget builds on CBP’s ongoing efforts to expand our situational and domain awareness; respond to emerging threats; and detect and intercept dangerous drugs and contraband.

This Budget:

  • funds critical enhancements to border security technology;
  • modernizes our facilities and processes to increase personnel safety and operational efficiency;
  • and provides for additional agents, officers, and support staff.

First and foremost, we are the nation’s largest federal law enforcement agency. At our borders and beyond, CBP continues to counter the threat of sophisticated criminal organizations engaged in drug smuggling. As you know, synthetic drugs like fentanyl are devastating our communities. In Fiscal Year 2023, CBP seized 27,000 pounds of fentanyl — the equivalent of approximately 1.2 billion doses. That’s nearly double the amount we seized in FY 2022.

Our borders must be the last line of defense, not the first, so our enforcement efforts are multilayered and begin beyond the borders. That’s how we are attacking the fentanyl problem. Using intelligence and advanced targeting, we are going after the whole supply chain, from precursor chemicals to production equipment. We are also enhancing information sharing and collaboration with our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners, foreign governments, and the private sector. We are bolstering our enforcement capabilities in the trade environment — pursuing key proposals to strengthen our ability to combat de minimis shipment exploitation.

We continue to experience serious challenges with increased migration between the ports of entry: most of this is being driven by criminal organizations engaged in the lucrative — and cruel — human smuggling business.

We are prioritizing national security and disrupting criminal networks, while maximizing consequences for unlawful entry, including detention, prosecution, and removal. At the end of the day, our goal continues to be getting our Agents and Officers back to the law enforcement mission they were hired to do. The funding you have provided is critical to maximizing our immigration consequence delivery system.

Like I said at the start, the men and women of CBP are the driving force of our agency. In the coming years, we are expecting a retirement surge due to a large number of personnel reaching eligibility. We are planning now, with a human capital strategy to ensure the necessary staffing levels to perform our critical missions. I appreciate your support to confront this challenge by increasing hiring well in advance.

As I know you are all aware, CBP employees have difficult, and often dangerous, jobs. I see it as one of my top priorities to take care of our folks. With critical funding and guidance provided by Congress, CBP has expanded the availability of key programs like on-site clinicians, and enhanced our suicide prevention, chaplaincy, and peer support programs that are improving employee wellbeing and performance. With your partnership, CBP will continue to build on these investments and prioritize employee support and resilience.

CRAIG STANFILL: The American Experiment Has Gone Down In Flames

What are we to do about it?

In the late eighteenth century, a group of unusually enlightened men gathered to plot rebellion against the most powerful military power of the day. Their grievances were many, set down in the Declaration of Independence. This storied document was many things, but above all it was a cry of rebellion against tyranny: against the arbitrary, capricious and unwelcome rule of the English over the colonies. It was a cry for liberty.

Against all odds, their rebellion succeeded and, a few years later, they met once again to devise a form of government that would be strong enough to see to those things that only government can do, such as military defense and the enablement of trade between the states. They were, however, leery of the dangers of tyranny, and so they crafted a unique form of government: a federal republic, with power dispersed among the several states, and numerous checks and balances to prevent abuse.

It was a noble experiment, and it served us well for centuries, but it is essential that we understand that this experiment has now failed in its primary purpose: to secure our liberties and to forestall tyrannical rule.

The evidence of this failure is indisputable to anyone with eyes to see. Unelected bureaucrats can impose their will on the citizenry in a way that so far exceeds the arbitrary and capricious rule of the English as to stagger the imagination.

They are imposing upon us regulations to all but outlaw vehicles powered by fossil fuels. They have decreed that a woman can become a man, and a man can become a woman, with utter disregard for biological reality.

They have colluded with the internet oligarchs to censor dissent and to silence their political opponents. They are using the mechanisms of law enforcement to protect their friends and to persecute their enemies.

The intelligence services are spying on Americans, and the FBI looks more and more like the secret police with every passing day. I am afraid of my government; I fear the knock on the door in the middle of the night. The grievances listed in the Declaration of Independence look trifling by comparison.

If the Democrats get their way, it will get even worse. They have made it clear that they intend to undo the system of checks and balances that have kept tyrants at bay for centuries. They will eliminate the Senate filibuster.

They will pack the Supreme Court and turn it into something like the Soviet Politburo, an organ of political power unaccountable to the people with absolute authority over every aspect of life. They will continue to push for non-citizen voting rights, allowing millions of illegal immigrants to vote in key local and state elections.

And, perhaps worst of all, power will be further centralized in Washington under the Democrats, who will willingly crackdown on local and state governments that don’t adopt their left-wing vision. In short, a form of absolute tyranny will be established.

Our constitution was designed to prevent this from happening. It is time for us to recognize that our experiment in self-rule has failed, and that we must do something about it before it is too late.

How did we get here? It all starts with federal money. Money is, and always has been, a profoundly corrupting influence in government. This has been true throughout history, going back to the Romans and even before.

Money is power. Money is control. Money gives you the ability to reward your friends and punish your enemies. Federal money has become a lever used by the bureaucrats to impose their will on state and local government, emasculating the federal system.

The Biden administration is giving away trillions of dollars in public funds to support its allies and to buy votes with the money they’ve taken from us. But no matter how many trillions of dollars they fritter away, it’s never enough, and they are on the verge of spending the country into bankruptcy. The system they have constructed will inevitably collapse, and take us down with it.

What then shall we do? How can we reclaim our lost freedom and save ourselves from the coming tyranny?

To do this, we need to be as bold as our opposition. They have stated that the American system is to be burned to the ground and replaced with something new. I agree, in part. Yes, burn it to the ground — but replace it instead with something old: the Federal Republic the founders intended us to have. This will require a massive — and I mean massive — reduction in the size and the scope of the government, and a return to its stated purpose, as eloquently laid out in the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States:

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

This, and no more.

Vulnerable Dems Voted To Boot George Santos. It’s A Different Story With Their Fellow Democrat Indicted For Bribery

Numerous swing district Democratic House members won’t say whether they’d vote to expel recently indicted Democratic Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar after having voted to oust indicted Republican New York Rep. George Santos just months ago.

The Department of Justice indicted Cuellar and his wife on May 3 for allegedly accepting $600,000 in bribes from an oil and gas company controlled by the Azerbaijanian government, as well as a bank located in Mexico City. Over a dozen Democrats running for reelection in battleground districts who casted several votes in 2023 to remove Santos from the chamber did not respond to multiple requests for comment about whether they’d do the same to Cuellar.

The members include Democratic Reps. Mike Levin of California, Josh Harder of California, Yadira Caraveo of Colorado, Jahana Hayes of Connecticut, Darren Soto of Florida, Eric Sorensen of Illinois, Frank Mrvan of Indiana, Hillary Scholten of Michigan, Angie Craig of Minnesota, Chris Pappas of New Hampshire, Gabriel Vasquez of New Mexico, Pat Ryan of New York, Greg Landsman of Ohio, Marcy Kaptur of Ohio, Emilia Sykes of Ohio, Matt Cartwright of Pennsylvania, Vicente Gonzalez of Texas and Val Hoyle of Oregon.

The vulnerable Democrats voted against referring an expulsion resolution introduced by Democratic California Rep. Robert Garcia to the Ethics Committee in May 2023; voted for GOP New York Rep. Anthony D’Esposito’s failed expulsion resolution in November 2023; and voted for Republican Mississippi Rep. Michael Guest‘s successful resolution that removed the indicted member in December 2023.

However, none of these members provided answers to the DCNF as to whether they’d vote to boot Cuellar.

Cuellar maintains his innocence and said in a statement on May 3 that he intends to seek reelection in November. The congressman’s seat is currently characterized by The Cook Political Report as “Lean Democrat.”

Santos was first indicted in early May 2023 over alleged wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds and making false statements to Congress. The Republican was hit with a 23-count superseding indictment in early October related to fraud and conspiracy.

Other swing district Democrats eventually voted to oust Santos after the House Ethics Committee released a report in mid-November, finding “substantial evidence” the Republican broke the law.

Democratic Reps. Sharice Davids of Kansas, Jared Golden of Maine, Steven Horsford of Nevada, Susie Lee of Nevada, Dina Titus of Nevada, Don Davis of North Carolina, Andrea Salinas of Oregon, Chris Deluzio of Pennsylvania and Kim Schrier of Washington opposed sending the first expulsion resolution to the Ethics Committee, while Reps. Susan Wild of Pennsylvania and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington and Kim Schrier of Washington voted “present.”

Davids, Golden, Horsford, Lee, Deluzio, Perez and Schrieron voted against D’Esposito’s effort to oust Santos, with Davis and Wild voting “present.” Titus and Salinas did not vote.

Only one of the other aforementioned Democrats responded to the DCNF’s requests for comment, with Deluzio signaling he wouldn’t support an effort to expel Cuellar unless the Ethics Committee completes a potential investigation.

A spokesperson for Deluzio called the allegations “egregious, and would be unacceptable from any American—much less a member of Congress” in a statement to a local outlet on Saturday, which his office pointed the DCNF toward upon request for comment.

“Just as he did before voting to expel former Congressman George Santos, Congressman Deluzio will let the judicial process and any Ethics Committee investigation run their course,” Deluzio’s team said at the time.

A spokesperson for the Ethics Committee declined to comment when asked about such an investigation.

Republicans are aiming to capitalize off of Cuellar’s indictment this cycle, with the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) compiling past statements from Democrats who called for Santos’ expulsion, Politico reported on Monday.

“Can swing district Democrats buck their party leadership who is protecting Cuellar and say he should resign?” a NRCC official told Politico. “The House Democrats’ official slogan is ‘people over politics.’ Are they going to subscribe to that or no?”

House Democratic leadership has defended Cuellar’s “presumption of innocence,” including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar.

Cuellar’s office did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

US Says Israel May Have Violated International Law – But Stops Short Of Full Conclusion

The U.S. said on Friday that Israel may have violated international law in its war against Hamas in Gaza, but stopped short of issuing a full conclusion on the matter.

Israel has been conducting military operations against Hamas in Gaza since Oct. 7, in part with the help of American military aid. The State Department issued a report to Congress on Friday that it is “reasonable to assess” that Israel may have used U.S. weapons in a matter “inconsistent” with international law, but has not seen enough evidence to come to that determination fully, according to a copy obtained by Just Security

“Given the nature of the conflict in Gaza, with Hamas seeking to hide behind civilian populations and infrastructure and expose them to Israeli military action, as well as the lack of USG personnel on the ground in Gaza, it is difficult to assess or reach conclusive findings on individual incidents,” the State Department said in its report on Friday. “Nevertheless, given Israel’s significant reliance on U.S.-made defense articles, it is reasonable to assess that defense articles covered under NSM-20 have been used by Israeli security forces since October 7 in instances inconsistent with its [International Humanitarian Law] obligations or with established best practices for mitigating civilian harm.”

“In any conflict involving foreign partners, it is often difficult to make swift, definitive assessments or determinations on whether specific U.S. defense articles or services have been used in a manner not consistent with international law,” the report reads. “However, there have been sufficient reported incidents to raise serious concerns.”

The report covers Israel’s military activities starting Oct. 7, the day which Hamas attacked Israel and killed roughly 1,200 people, prompting a massive counteroffensive. President Joe Biden ordered that the report be created in a National Security Memorandum in February.

While the report casts criticisms against Israel’s military, it also notes that Israel made assurances to the U.S. in March that American weapons were being used in accordance with international law — assurances which were found to be “credible and reliable.” The State Department said Israel has begun addressing the violations outlined in the report, and no determinations were made that the nation obstructed or hamstrung the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, according to the State Department.

The Biden administration and the Israeli government have been increasingly at odds with each other as to how the war against Hamas in Gaza should be conducted. The Biden administration is urging Israel to limit its military operations and avoid a ground invasion into Rafah — the southernmost region of Gaza — citing the impact it could have on civilians in the region.

The Biden administration delayed a shipment of military equipment to Israel last week over fears that the country would use them in a Rafah operation. The report did not find any instances that would justify halting military aid at a larger scope.

CNN Legal Analysts Set Correspondent Straight When She Tries To Defend Trump Judge For Mistrial Ruling

Two CNN legal analysts informed a network correspondent that Judge Juan Merchan’s mistrial denial ruling was not fair to former President Donald Trump’s defense.

Merchan denied Trump’s attorney Todd Blanche’s motion for a mistrial Tuesday after [censored] star Stormy Daniels’ testimony, which he claimed was “unduly prejudicial,” with the judge questioning why the defense did not raise more objections. CNN anchor Audie Cornish echoed Merchan’s sentiment of saying it was the defense’s fault that Daniels’ testimony was excessively detailed, but network legal analysts Elie Honig and Elliot Williams told her the judge could have stepped in at any time.

“That‘s actually one of the things I found most striking were these repeated attempts to call for a mistrial, but with one of them ending with the judge basically telling them that they were bad at their jobs, saying to Trump‘s attorneys, ‘look, I don‘t know why you let that go.’ That is your job to stop that moment and that I feel like is one of those moments that people can look back on and see in the record as being kind of a turning point, if anything,” Cornish said.

“Something we haven‘t talked a lot about this week is that prosecutors and the judge can also step in at a certain point,” Williams said. “And the judge, and Elie and I talked about this one day earlier in the week where you‘re asking questions and the judge just says, ‘objection sustained.’ Where the other side didn’t object to it, but they should have and he’s sort of slapping them on the wrist for not having done so. And if the judge truly felt that evidence should not have been getting into court, he had every right and ability to cut it off.”

Merchan suggested he will tell the jury only to take into account a limited portion of Daniels’ testimony in the trial about an alleged $130,000 payment from Trump to the [censored] star for her to keep quiet about an alleged affair.

“But is there a world where he wouldn’t want to be jumping in. Right? In a case so high-profile?” Cornish asked.

“This is where I think the judge was actually quite unfair to Trump‘s team when it came to ruling because he said, ‘well, it‘s your fault. You should have been objecting.’ First of all, Trump‘s team raised it before the day started, and the judge said, ‘I’m with you, we’re not going to get out of control with the details.’ And second of all, Trump‘s team did object three, four times and the judge said, I agree,” Honig said. “Objection sustained. So what are they supposed to do? Pop up every question? You look horrible in front of the jury.”

Jonathan Turley Says Trump Judge Crossed ‘The Line’ By Suggesting Witness Be Called By Alvin Bragg’s Team

George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley said Friday that the judge in former President Donald Trump’s trial crossed “the line” with a suggestion to prosecutors.

New York Judge Juan Merchan suggested that Former Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg testify after prosecutors from the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg sought to introduce Weisselberg’s severance package into evidence, according to Politico. Turley called the suggestion “very unusual” when asked about the development by Fox News host Martha MacCallum.

“It reminds me of a judge when I started out as a lawyer who was notorious because he would say, ‘Is the defense ready to present its case,’ and turn to the prosecutors and say ‘Are we ready to present our case?’ This is a little bit crossing the line. You’re not supposed to be making this a mutual effort,” Turley said.

Weisselberg was sentenced to five months in jail for perjury in April over testimony in Trump’s civil fraud trial.

Trump faces 34 felony charges of falsifying business records in an indictment secured by Bragg in March 2023 in a case centered around a $130,000 payout to [censored] star Stormy Daniels as part of a confidentiality agreement.

Turley earlier voiced criticism of Merchan over his handling of former Trump attorney Michael Cohen. The judge toldprosecutors to inform Cohen not to make public comments about the former president and the case on Friday.

“Cohen is out there, you know, attacking the president, campaigning against the president. People are attacking Cohen. Were you protecting against?” Turley asked. “He’s in the middle of a firestorm of his own creation and so the gag order makes no sense at all, it’s achieving nothing except silencing the leading candidate for the presidency and to have the sudden epiphany that just maybe, Cohen should be instructed not to make these statements is a bit late.”

“I mean, he’s closing the door after the horse has gone,” Turley continued. “I mean, this is the weekend before he appears on the stand. So, I would have expected at a minimum that the judge would have been very clear at the beginning of the case that these witnesses are asked not to make public statements.”

ALEX McFARLAND: A Free Education In Iran For Students Who Are Pro-Hamas

Iran’s state-owned Press TV reported that Iran’s Shiraz University “as a gesture of solidarity” will offer scholarships to any student suspended for anti-Israel, pro-Hamas protests on U.S. campuses.

This is not Babylon Bee satire. Shiraz U made the offer. Will Cal Tech, Harvard, or UPenn students transfer from where free speech and protesting are defended to where they are punished? If so, they are in for an eye-opening experience. Then again, if your moral compass is Hamas, your eyes and values may need re-examining.

Only a few students in the protests could even articulate their cause. Most just faithfully held placards or chanted, “Free Palestine!” A minority defaced college property … to prevent genocide?

To students considering an Iranian degree, I say go. See extremism in action. Test your sensitivities. Here are three recommendations to guarantee a full radical extremist Iranian college experience:

1 — On the first day, wear your pride flag tee shirt, tell everyone you’re gender-fluid, and only answer to your preferred pronouns.

2 — Before going, verify that all your credits transfer for your Interstellar Lesbian Dance Theory degree.

3 — Buy your falafel-a-week meal plan in advance. The exchange rate is 49,990 rials to one U.S. dollar.

Here’s a crash course in Iranian society; you will need it: Female students must comply with Iran’s “decency law” instituted under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. He decreed that women in public not covered by full-length gowns and hijabs were considered “naked.” The punishment for being uncovered is 74 lashes and 60 days in prison. Beatings are optional but common.

Iran’s “morality police” enforce the dress code. In 2022, they arrested and brutally beat 22-year-old Mahsa Amini for wearing an “improper hijab.” She died in their custody a few days later.

Witness photos show Amini wearing a hijab, but enforcers claim some hair was visible. NGO Iran Human Rights documented that Iranian forces killed over 130 people (mostly women) who protested Amini’s murder.

Unlike the West, Iran crushes dissent. “The government also often charged political dissidents with vague crimes, some of which carried the death penalty, such as ‘antirevolutionary behavior,’ ‘corruption on earth,’ ‘siding with global arrogance,’” said the State Department’s 2023 report on human rights in Iran.

I’m not seriously suggesting any student study in Iran. I do recommend a summer reading: Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order. Nearly thirty years ago, Harvard Professor and Carter administration member Dr. Samuel Huntington wrote that the world faced 1,000 years of dark ages if militant Jew-hating, Christian-hating and America-hating Islamic extremism multiplied.

Huntington suggested their ideologies would lead to a new civilization, not based on land, economics, or politics but on radical religious, murderous global aspirations. Sounds like the October massacre? It should. “From the river to the sea…” calls for Israel’s extinction.

Huntington predicted a fanatical, convert-or-die civilization. Can you say “infidel?” He saw a world where apocalyptic Islam replaced Christians, Jews, Buddhists, and even atheists. Decades of EU open borders, naïve Critical Theory professors, and more than $13 billion donated to U.S. universities from nations like Qatar fuel his predictions.

Students and legislators worldwide might benefit from a semester in Iran. If they survived, they would learn the Iranian people are not evil, just the regime.

The values that built our institutions could rescue them. English minister John Harvard founded Harvard University. Its original motto was “Truth for Christ and the Church.” While most people are not yet zealots of bombastic ideologies, they are expanding, and time is expiring on Huntington’s clock. Acknowledgment of objective reality and Jesus Christ is still the answer.

The Stage Is Set For Alvin Bragg’s Star Witness—An Admitted Liar—To Take The Stand Against Trump

NEW YORK—Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s team called five witnesses and concluded a significant portion of their case Friday, clearing the way for Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen — an admitted liar — to take the stand.

Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass told the judge they would call just two more witnesses next week, potentially resting their case against former President Donald Trump by the end of the week. Cohen, whose recommendations include pleading guilty to lying to Congress and admitting that he lied under oath to a federal judge, is expected to take the stand on Monday to corroborate key aspects of Bragg’s case.

Trump is charged with 34 felony counts for allegedly falsifying business records while reimbursing Cohen for a $130,000 payment made to keep [censored] star Stormy Daniels quiet about her claims of an affair in the lead up to the 2016 election.

Many of Friday’s witnesses were custodial witnesses who prosecutors called to verify evidence like phone records and social media posts, though Madeleine Westerhout, who was Trump’s executive assistant at the White House, also concluded her testimony Friday.

Westerhout said that she did not have any specific recollection of Trump speaking with former Trump Organization Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg in 2017. She told prosecutors Thursday that she recalled Trump on a few occasions calling Weisselberg for clarification on checks he had questions about.

Westerhout also confirmed Friday that Trump would sometimes sign documents and checks without reviewing them, agreeing he is a person who would “multitask.”

Merchan suggested Friday, in response to a concern raised by Trump’s defense, that Weisselberg be called into court out of the presence of the jury, at least initially, to see if he is willing to testify. Weisselberg is currently in jail serving a five month sentence on perjury charges related to his testimony during Trump’s civil fraud case and previously plead guilty to tax fraud.

Other witnesses Friday included employees of AT&T and Verizon, who testified to phone records, and two paralegals from the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, who testified about Trump’s social media posts, text messages between Stormy Daniels’ manager Gina Rodriguez and National Enquirer editor Dylan Howard and summaries of phone records prepared by the office.

The text messages revealed Rodriguez initially was asking $250,000 for Daniels’ story but lowered the price after negotiating with Howard.

One of Trump’s tweets introduced into evidence Friday included his May 2018 Twitter post about paying Cohen.

“Mr. Cohen, an attorney, received a monthly retainer, not from the campaign and having nothing to do with the campaign, from which he entered into, through reimbursement, a private contract between two parties, known as a non-disclosure agreement, or NDA,” Trump wrote at the time.

Merchan dismissed the jury before lunch, concluding a week that featured the dramatic testimony of Stormy Daniels, which caused Trump’s defense to twice motion for a mistrial. The judge denied both motions.

After the jury left Friday, defense attorney Todd Blanche asked Merchan to order Cohen to stop talking about Trump and the case.

Cohen has taken to social media to criticize Trump, repeatedly referring to him in a number of Twitter posts as “VonShitzenpants.” Recently, he’s been speaking live on TikTok about the trial.

Blanche referenced an instance Friday of Cohen wearing a shirt with a picture of Trump behind bars on TikTok.

Georgia Longstreet, one of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office paralegals who testified Friday, said when asked by Trump’s defense that she has not recently reviewed Cohen’s TikTok as part of her job.

Merchan instructed prosecutors to tell Cohen that “the judge is asking him to refrain making any more statements.”

Many of the witnesses who have testified so far have continued to portray Cohen in an unfavorable light. David Pecker, former National Enquirer publisher, agreed that Cohen is prone to exaggeration.

Keith Davidson, former attorney for Karen McDougal and Daniels, called Cohen a “very aggressive guy.” Davidson said he thought Cohen was “going to kill himself” after he called him to air frustration about not getting a spot in the Trump administration, where he had hoped for a position as high as attorney general.

Likewise, former White House communications director Hope Hicks testified that Cohen had a tendency to go “rogue,” taking actions campaign staff found unhelpful and frustrating.

Merchan denied Trump’s bid to prevent Cohen from testifying in March. “Michael Cohen is a liar,” Trump’s attorneys had argued. “He recently committed perjury, on the stand and under oath, at a civil trial involving President Trump. If his public statements are any indication, he plans to do so again at this criminal trial.”

Former Federal Prosecutor Predicts On MSNBC That Michael Cohen Won’t Be ‘Last Witness’ Because He Isn’t ‘Good’

Former federal prosecutor Jon Sale forecasted on Friday that former President Donald Trump’s previous attorney Michael Cohen is not going to be the final witness against him because he will not be “good.”

Trump faces 34 felony counts of allegedly falsifying business documents in relation to reimbursing Cohen, who is set to be a key witness testifying against him starting Monday, for $130,000 paid to [censored] star Stormy Daniels in the lead-up to the 2016 election. Sale said on MSNBC’s “Katy Tur Reports” that prosecutors like to begin and end with what he referred to as “a good witness,” citing this preference for his prediction that Cohen will not be the final witness the prosecution calls to testify.

“If you look at David Pecker, the first witness, frequently the prosecution wants to start off with a good witness and end with a good witness,” Sale said. “So I don’t think that Michael Cohen’s going to be the last witness. But I think what they’re concerned about is that he testify to a point where, like Stormy Daniels did, where he demonstrates that he is so biased that he might not have told the truth.”

Pecker indicated in his testimony that he did not perceive Cohen as reliable, agreeing he was “prone to exaggeration.” Cohen has persistently attacked Trump on social media, including referring to him as “VonShitzenpants.”

Trump’s former attorney also recently went on TikTok, where the former president’s current attorney Todd Blanche said he donned a shirt with a picture of Trump behind bars and announced that he was running for Congress. Judge Juan Merchan on Friday requested that prosecutors tell Cohen that “the judge is asking him to refrain making any more statements.”

Trump’s gag order bars him from making public statements regarding witnesses in the trial, which include Cohen and Daniels, both of whom have continuously discussed the case on social media and criticized Trump. Merchan in March denied Trump’s request to block Daniels, as well as Cohen, from testifying.

The [censored] star admitted she hates Trump under cross-examination.

Biden Admin Announces $400 Million In New Military Aid For Ukraine

The U.S. announced a new military aid package for Ukraine on Friday, as part of a broader $60 billion package approved by President Joe Biden last month.

Included in the package are air defense munitions for the Patriot missile system, Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMAR) and munitions, Javelin and TOW guided missiles, armored personnel carriers and tactical vehicles, artillery and small weapons rounds, as well as an assortment of other armaments, State Department Secretary Antony Blinken said in a statement on Friday. Kyiv had been urgently requesting the package to utilize in its war against Russia, whose own military is fighting at full force.

“As President Biden has made clear, the United States and the international coalition we have assembled will continue to stand with Ukraine in its defense of its freedom,” Blinken said on Friday.

The $60 billion aid package that passed with Biden’s signature and bipartisan approval in Congress includes $14 billion for the direct purchase of weapons through the Pentagon’s Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. At least $23 billion goes toward replenishing the U.S.’ weapons stockpile, which can be transferred to foreign allies through the presidential drawdown authority.

The $400 billion package reported on Friday will be tapped through the $23 billion tranche of the package, according to CNN. It is the second time aid has been drawn down after the U.S. announced a $1 billion package immediately after Biden signed the $60 billion aid bill; the aid was delivered to Kyiv within hours of the announcement.

The Pentagon also announced $6 billion in security assistance two days after Biden signed the bill, though that was tapped through $14 billion in the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, rather than the president’s drawdown authority, according to CNN.

Ukraine has been pleading with its Western allies for months to quickly send additional military aid so it can continue defending against Russia’s invasion, which is slowly making territorial advancements along the eastern front. Ukraine was forced to withdraw from several positions in that region in recent months amid a shortage of manpower and munitions, while Russia’s military – though it has suffered immense losses — has fully resurged.

Some defense experts and lawmakers fear that even with additional aid, Ukraine will not be able to achieve its goal of securing a military victory against Russia.

“$50 billion, $60 billion, $10 billion — it doesn’t matter. It has to be tied to a strategy and to an objective that’s achievable,” Michael DiMino, senior fellow at Defense Priorities and former CIA officer, previously told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “It has to be a realistic objective. And I would argue that taking back 100% of Ukraine’s territory is not really a feasible military objective at this juncture.”

US Orders Withdrawal Of 1,000 Troops From Hostile African Nation After Negotiations With Regime Fail

The Department of Defense(DOD) has issued formal orders to all 1,000 combat troops to withdraw from Niger, a war-torn African country that has become increasingly hostile to the American presence in the region, Politico reported on Friday.

Niger, ruled by a junta-backed regime, had made it clear in recent months that U.S. troops stationed for counterterrorism operations were no longer welcome and needed to withdraw quickly, a request that the Biden administration granted in April. Behind the scenes, however, the Biden administration had been working to reach a deal with the junta to keep some troops in Niger; after this effort failed, the Pentagon ordered a full withdrawal for all troops in Niger, putting an end to all U.S. ground-based counterterrorism efforts in the Sahel region, according to Politico.

The 1,000 stationed U.S. combat troops will begin leaving Niger within the next several months, although the timeline could shift depending on circumstances, one U.S. official told Politico. The troops will move to other locations in the region where they can conduct operations until they are evacuated; evacuation efforts will not include U.S. embassy personnel.

The U.S. has had a counterterrorism presence in Niger since 2013 to fight radical jihadism in the Sahel. Niger’s democratic government was overthrown by a military-led junta in 2023, which created its own government and rejected the U.S.’ presence while welcoming Russian forces to provide security operations.

Calls for the U.S. to withdraw from the region have peaked in recent months, with mass protests breaking out across the region demanding that the American forces leave. Troops have been mostly holed up in a U.S. airbase in Niger that has reportedly had reduced access to essential resources, such as medicine and equipment, and limited communication with the DOD or the State Department, as the Junta has refused to allow diplomatic flights to enter the country.

Several defense experts and former U.S. officials who previously spoke to the Daily Caller News Foundation said the situation had become so volatile that the troops needed to evacuate as quickly as possible for their own safety.

“If you don’t want to see another Benghazi or another Mogadishu, these guys got to go,” Michael DiMino, a senior fellow at Defense Priorities and former CIA officer, told the DCNF, referring to previous incidents in which U.S. forces in Libya and Somalia came under attack and were killed by militants in 2012 and 1993. “ “It’s gotten so dire that the only question is, can we stay or not without American troops being overwhelmed… I don’t think our interests in the Sahel are great enough to demand the sacrifice of our men and women.”

Fernando Castillo in June 2023 solicited a $5,000 bribe from a citizen of El Salvador and Mexico in exchange for paperwork that would allow her to remain in the U.S., according to a Justice Department press release. The former Border Patrol agent was subsequently caught and has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.

“A federal officer who sells his office for personal gain shatters public trust in government officials,” U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza said of the case. “Unfortunately, Castillo’s crime unfairly tarnishes the honest officers who serve the public with dedication day in and day out.  We will eagerly hold officers like Castillo accountable.”

Castillo was working at the Central Processing Center in Texas when he approached the woman, who was awaiting deportation, and offered her “papers” that would allow her to remain in the U.S., according to court documents reviewed by Border Report. He then made false entries into her immigration and file and printed them out.

However, the woman alerted immigration authorities after she noticed money missing from her purse, according to the court documents. Federal authorities researched her file and realized Castillo made changes to her immigration status, essentially permitting her to remain in the U.S.

Agents arrested the Border Patrol agent when he met with the woman with the fraudulent documents.

Castillo pled guilty to one count of bribery of a public official on Feb. 1. Along with his 18-month prison sentence, he will serve one year of supervised release and pay a $100 fine, according to the Justice Department.

“Fernando Castillo engaged in conduct that betrayed the oath he took to faithfully serve the citizens of the United States of America,” Special Agent in Charge John Morales of the FBI El Paso Field Office said in a statement. “His behavior should not take away from the outstanding work done each day by the vast majority of law enforcement professionals at U.S. Border Patrol.”

News of the sentencing comes as Customs and Border Protection officials on the southern border continue to deal with an unprecedented immigration crisis.

Since President Joe Biden took office, at least 6 million encounters have taken place at the U.S-Mexico border, with the White House and state governments forced to spend billions to deal with the influx.

CHARLYCE BOZZELLO: Here’s How One Of America’s Most Powerful Unions Turned On Israel

College campuses across the country are overrun with anti-Israel — and often antisemitic — protests. Students at these “elite” schools have formed encampments, damaged school property, and derailed academic calendars in their rage against Israel. The United Auto Workers (UAW) is one of their most vocal allies.

What does Gaza have to do with autoworkers? The answer is exactly what you might suspect — absolutely nothing.

These protests are not being carried out by autoworkers. Instead, the UAW’s army of coastal elite graduate school students are leading the charge against Israel. It’s hard to imagine a group more disconnected from actual autoworkers, many of whom UAW President Shawn Fain is looking to organize.

How did a union whose roots started in representing factory workers make such inroads in academia? It was out of necessity. The UAW’s membership has been declining for years, recently reaching its lowest level since the Great Recession. As unionized auto jobs plummeted, the UAW did what any traveling snake oil salesman would do: Instead of improving its product, the union found a new group of customers.

Now, over 100,000 of the UAW’s current active membership are graduate students and academic workers. As membership shifts away from the factory floor and closer to the faculty lounge, the union’s priorities seem to have shifted along with them.

These changing priorities are best shown by the career of Brandon Mancilla, director of UAW Region 9A, which promoted a recent anti-Israel rally at New York University. The protest included calls for an “intifada,” and chants of the well-known anti-Israel slogan “from the river to the sea.” The rally was also promoted by the UAW’s national leadership.

Mancilla is not an autoworker. He joined the union through the UAW local representing Harvard’s graduate student workers. After graduating, he worked for UAW local 2325 — which represents lawyers, not auto workers — before being elected to represent Region 9A.

NYU is hardly alone. UAW-represented student workers were among those at the tent encampment at Columbia. UAW local 4811, which represents student workers at the University of California, even threatened a strike over the school’s rejection of the union-led anti-Israel protests.

Nationally, the UAW has declared its support for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict, even appearing at press conferences with controversial anti-Israel politicians like Rep. Ilhan Omar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, where Shawn Fain said he was “proud” to stand with them.

Fain recently took to social media to issue a statement defending the campus protests against Israel shortly after police cleared out the occupation of a Columbia University building. This statement was even reposted on the UAW’s official website. Notably, the site does not feature a statement condemning the original Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack which killed over 1,000 Israelis.

Radical student groups seem to be the UAW’s flavor of the month. But Fain continues his crusade to organize autoworkers in the historically anti-union South. Workers who live in the real world — rather than in ivory towers — should be able to see right through him and his union’s antics.

CNN Host Admits Trump’s Immigration Policies Were ‘Right,’ Says Biden Must Bring Them Back

CNN Host Fareed Zakaria in an interview set to air on Friday acknowledged former President Donald Trump’s policies to have immigrants apply for asylum from their home country and remain in Mexico were correct.

Biden’s administration disposed of Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy in August 2022 after being forced to reinstate it in November 2021. Zakaria on PBS’s “Firing Line with Margaret Hoover” said Trump’s policy for immigrants to apply for asylum from their home country and wait in Mexico worked, urging Biden to put it back in place as well as take “symbolic” actions to secure the border.

“Today, people are coming in aided by cartels to whom they pay huge amounts of money, and they’re not running away from law enforcement,” Zakaria told host Margaret Hoover. “They’re running towards law enforcement because they have figured out that all they have to do is say the magic words: ‘I have a credible fear of persecution.’ And bingo, you’re in the country legally. You get two court hearings. They could take seven years. Meanwhile, you slip into the shadows of the economy. So the whole system is broken. And Biden needs to confront that and say, you know, ‘We are going to have to reform the whole system.’ I would wish he’d do something much more extreme, like say the old asylum system is dead. No one is coming in through that process. You have to apply from your home country.”

Hoover said this was Trump’s policy and asked if Biden should follow what his predecessor did for political reasons.

Zakaria answered affirmatively, adding, “And it’s also the right policy because the old asylum system is being gamed by millions of people.”

The policy sent nearly 70,000 migrants to stay in Mexico until their hearings in immigration court, according to the American Immigration Council. The Biden administration has taken back numerous Trump-era border policies, including his Muslim travel ban and border wall project.

“I still think what Biden should do is declare an emergency national security crisis, send National Guard, shut down the amnesty process and say we’re going to redo it,” Zakaria said. “It’s quite possible courts will throw out elements of what he does, but this is a place where Biden should learn something from Trump. Much of what Trump did, the Muslim ban, banning TikTok, the shutting down the border, was overturned by courts.”

“But people remembered that he was trying,” he added. “Where he was. Symbolically, it helped him a lot. Biden needs to do something symbolic at the border. Bill Clinton had a great line. He said the American people don’t need the president to succeed, but they need to catch him trying. He’s got to be seen to be trying to do stuff.”

Federal Court Denies Steve Bannon’s Appeal On Contempt Of Congress Charges

A federal appeals court upheld on Friday the contempt of Congress conviction against Steve Bannon, The New York Times reported.

Bannon, a former President Donald Trump advisor, was convicted in 2022 after ignoring a subpoena from the Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. The three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit unanimously rejected Bannon’s appeal, where he had argued that he relied on the advice of his legal counsel when refusing to respond to the committee, according to the NYT.

“Effectively enforcing congressional subpoenas would be exceedingly difficult if contempt charges required showing that a failure to appear or refusal to answer questions was not just deliberate and intentional, but also done in bad faith,” the judges wrote. “Otherwise, any subpoenaed witness could decline to respond and claim they had a good-faith belief that they need not comply, regardless of how idiosyncratic or misguided that belief may be.”

“Bannon insists that ‘willfully’ should be interpreted to require bad faith and argues that his noncompliance does not qualify because his lawyer advised him not to respond to the subpoena,” the judges added. “This court, however, has squarely held that ‘willfully’ … means only that the defendant deliberately and intentionally refused to comply with a congressional subpoena, and that this exact ‘advice of counsel’ defense is no defense at all.”

The ruling makes it likely that Bannon could serve a four-month prison sentence, according to the NYT. Former Trump aide Peter Navarro began serving a four-month sentence in March after being convicted on similar charges.

Bannon also faces charges stemming from an investigation by the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg stemming from an effort to raise funds for constructing a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, according to CNN. The trial is scheduled to start later this year, the NYT reported.

Biden Admin Reportedly Set To Significantly Strengthen Tariffs On Chinese EVs, Critical Minerals

The Biden administration is reportedly set to significantly enhance tariffs targeting Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) and other green energy-related products as early as next week, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

The administration will approximately quadruple tariffs against Chinese EVs, and U.S. officials will also increase levies against critical minerals, solar products and batteries that are sourced from China, according to the WSJ, citing people familiar with the matter. The question of Chinese tariffs has divided Biden administration policymakers, and the reportedly forthcoming tariffs are in response to growing fears that Chinese companies are beginning to ramp up green technology exports and pose a threat to American firms.

China dominates the global supply chains for the raw minerals needed to manufacture many different types of green technologies that the Biden administration is pushing to advance its sweeping climate agenda. The administration has sought cooperation with China on long-term climate goals, but its dominance of the green supply chain has also spurred considerable debate about the degree of access that cheaper Chinese products should have to the U.S. market as American green energy companies are trying to stand themselves up.

The Biden administration is reportedly focused particularly on Chinese EVs, which currently face a 25% tariff, according to the WSJ. The reported forthcoming changes will increase that tariff to approximately 100%, a substantial increase reflecting the concern of some American car manufacturers and legislators that the scale of Chinese EV manufacturing could potentially overcome the 25% tariff.

“China will take all necessary measures to defend its rights and interests,” a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Friday while denouncing the reportedly forthcoming moves, the WSJ reported. The official announcement could come as early as Tuesday, though it is possible that the timeline gets pushed back.

The politics of the upcoming presidential election are also a factor in the administration’s decision on the tariffs, according to the WSJ.

Former President Donald Trump has warned of a “bloodbath” for the American auto industry if he does not win the election because he perceives President Joe Biden as too weak on China.

Trump has claimed that he would consider hitting all Chinese exports with a tariff of 60% or more if reelected, the WSJ reported. Both Trump and President Joe Biden have made an effort to highlight to working-class voters in states like Michigan and Pennsylvania that they are committed to protecting their interests from foreign competitors in China and elsewhere.

The White House, the Treasury Department, the Commerce Department and the Department of Energy did not respond immediately to requests for comment.

Advocates argue that the current law places a burden on records custodians, diverting them from daily operations to handle or deny OPRA requests, especially affecting municipal governments and law enforcement agencies. Critics of the bill’s amendments believe they will hinder public access to government records.

Notably, the revised bill requires specific identification of the staff members, relevant information, and timestamps for email requests, making it challenging for most requesters to provide necessary details.

The updated legislation allows agencies to take legal action against individuals whose requests disrupt operations, empowering judges to restrict access to public records. This bill also permits custodians to increase record fees and transfer the responsibility of proving production costs to the public.

Requesters taken to court will no longer receive attorney’s fees, while those making anonymous requests must waive their appeal rights.

Serial Shoplifter Arraigned on Grand Larceny Charges in Queens

Queens, NY – Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Aaron Smalls, 39, was arraigned on charges of grand larceny in the second and fourth degrees and four counts of grand larceny in the third degree for stealing jewelry from Queens stores valued at $170,000. Smalls, from Staten Island, also faces charges of robbery and assault for a separate incident in 2021.

If convicted, Smalls could face up to 15 years in prison. He was ordered by Queens Criminal Court Judge Diego Friere to appear in court on Friday, May 13. Smalls allegedly used a tactic of asking to view expensive jewelry in stores and fleeing with the items in hand.

The accused was apprehended at the Woodside Motel in Queens Boulevard on May 8 by members of the Queens Warrant Squad. The investigation involved multiple precincts as well as the Queens Grand Larceny Squad led by Detective William Dugan. Catherine Jahn of the Major Economic Crimes Bureau will prosecute the case.

Drunk Driver Crashes Into Pole, Blames Car, Arrested

Stafford, VA – Early this morning, residents in Stafford experienced road closures on Telegraph Road when a driver collided with a pole.

On Tuesday night, Deputy J.J. Suh responded to the accident scene around 10:12 p.m. after receiving reports that a vehicle had flipped, trapping the driver inside.

Upon arrival, Deputy Suh found a communications pole destroyed, hindering traffic flow. Following suspicions of alcohol involvement, the driver underwent field sobriety tests and was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence. Cleanup efforts resulted in road closures until 8:34 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The man’s name was not released at this time.
