Once mighty NJ GOP boss George Gilmore suffers new humiliation in Toms River fire commissioner race

by Shore News Network September 22, 2025
By Shore News Network

Toms River, NJ – George Gilmore, once the most powerful Republican kingmaker in New Jersey politics, has sunk to a stunning low — backing yet another losing candidate in a small-town fire district election just months after a bruising defeat in the GOP governor’s primary.

Gilmore, the former Ocean County Republican chairman whose grip on statewide politics once determined elections, saw his candidate Michael Hopson, allegedly his nephew, fall short in a bitterly fought Toms River fire commissioner race. The loss follows Gilmore’s high-profile push for radio host Bill Spadea in the GOP primary for governor, a move that collapsed against Jack Ciattarelli.

Saturday’s contest capped a messy rerun of a February election marred by ballot errors and a dispute over write-in votes. In the rematch, Anthony Cirz emerged victorious, adding to Gilmore’s streak of political setbacks.

Gilmore’s collapse from political giant to sidelined figure began years earlier. Convicted on federal tax charges, he was forced to give up his law license, his post as Ocean County chairman, and his seat on the county election board. A pardon from then-President Donald Trump revived his role in local politics, but his influence has never fully recovered.

These days, the only influence the disgraced chairman wields is with those whom he has secured public jobs for across the county, and his shrinking circle of insiders.

The February fire district election had already been a debacle. Richard Tutela secured one seat outright with 690 votes, but the second seat devolved into controversy after Hopson was initially certified as the winner with 615 votes, narrowly edging Golden’s 614 and Cirz’s 615. The confusion stemmed from how write-in votes were handled. Two votes had gone to candidates already listed on the ballot — one to Cirz, one to Golden.

Dawn Halliwell, the fire district’s financial clerk, counted those ballots despite being advised not to, triggering an appeal that ultimately forced the redo. The new vote handed Cirz a clear victory and left Gilmore empty-handed once again.

For Gilmore, the loss underscores just how far he has fallen from the days when a nod from him could make or break a campaign in the state.

Key Points

  • Former Ocean County GOP chairman George Gilmore backed another losing candidate in a Toms River fire commissioner election.
  • Gilmore’s fall from power began after a federal tax conviction, though a Trump pardon restored some influence.
  • The fire race redo was ordered after ballot mishandling in February, ending with Anthony Cirz defeating Gilmore’s ally Michael Hopson.

Governor Moore Vows to Work With Trump Administration of Key Bridge Rebuild

by Shore News Network September 22, 2025
By Shore News Network

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Gov. Wes Moore reaffirmed Maryland’s commitment to rebuilding the Francis Scott Key Bridge in a statement Friday, responding to a letter from U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy as the state pushes ahead with one of the largest infrastructure projects in its history.

Moore reflected on the March 26, 2024 disaster, when the massive container ship Dali struck the bridge, sending it into the Patapsco River and killing six workers. He noted that within 11 weeks, crews had cleared the federal channel to the Port of Baltimore, a process some experts predicted could take nearly a year.

The governor said the bridge rebuild remains in the design phase, with demolition and pre-construction already underway. He emphasized the economic stakes, pointing out that 13 percent of Maryland’s economy is tied to the Port of Baltimore, which leads the nation in vehicle and farm equipment imports and ranks among the top U.S. ports for coal, salt, and total cargo volume.

Moore said his administration is coordinating with the Trump Administration on ways to reduce costs and speed construction. Price estimates for the project are expected to be finalized in the coming months, with the Maryland Department of Transportation slated to provide updates.

The governor also confirmed Maryland is pursuing litigation while using insurance settlements and advance construction funding to keep progress on track.

“The safety of the bridge and the sound stewardship of taxpayer dollars remain our top priority as we work to fully restore economic vitality,” Moore said.

Tractor-trailer crash shuts down I-68 as DUI wreck, burglary and multiple arrests hit Cumberland

by Shore News Network September 22, 2025
By Shore News Network

CUMBERLAND, Md. – A tractor-trailer crash that blocked Interstate 68 for hours, a drunk-driving wreck that left a woman critically hurt, and a string of weekend arrests kept Cumberland police on high alert.

Just before midnight Saturday, officers rushed to the Crosstown Bridge on I-68 eastbound after a 2021 Freightliner overturned and blocked the highway. The driver, identified as 25-year-old Kumar Mohit of Roseville, Calif., was rescued from the wreckage and taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. State and county crews shut down the roadway from LaVale to Cumberland for nearly seven hours while the truck and trailer were cleared. Investigators believe speed played a role.

Less than two hours later, on Sunday around 1:55 a.m., a 2009 Saturn Vue smashed into a utility pole on Park Street, snapping it in half and knocking out power across the neighborhood. Two passengers were rushed to the hospital, including a 26-year-old woman from Ridgeley, W.Va., who suffered life-threatening injuries. The driver, Richard Louis Webb Jr., 50, of Cumberland, was arrested at the scene. Police said he was intoxicated and driving without a valid license. Webb faces multiple DUI and traffic charges and was later released pending trial.

Later Sunday, police responded to reports of a trespasser at UPMC on Willowbrook Road. Officers arrested 56-year-old Eric Roger Marmaduke of Cumberland after he refused to leave a closed medical building. He was cited for trespassing and released.

That same night, officers on patrol in Pershing Street broke up a disturbance after a man allegedly yelled at patrons and resisted police commands. The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Noah Ryan Shaffer of Cumberland, was charged with disorderly conduct, intoxicated public disturbance, and obstructing and hindering. He was released on his own recognizance after an initial court appearance.

Also Sunday, 22-year-old Paityn Adison Gordon of Cumberland was arrested on a warrant tied to a May 1 crash on Industrial Boulevard. Investigators said Gordon was at fault in that wreck and later found to be driving an uninsured vehicle. She was released pending trial.

In a separate incident, officers responding to a burglary call at a Greene Street business discovered the front door glass smashed. Surveillance video and witness statements led police to identify the suspect as 42-year-old William Morgan Stewart Sr. of Cumberland. Stewart was arrested nearby and charged with multiple counts, including burglary and malicious destruction of property. He was taken to the Allegany County Detention Center awaiting a court appearance.

Police said they were assisted by the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office, Maryland State Police, volunteer fire companies, and the State Highway Administration throughout the weekend.

  • A DUI crash on Park Street left a Ridgeley woman with life-threatening injuries; the driver was arrested.
  • Police made multiple weekend arrests for trespassing, disorderly conduct, uninsured driving, and burglary.

Cumberland saw no shortage of chaos as crashes and arrests stretched across the weekend.

Mikie Sherrill Says Merge Toms River, Jackson, and Brick Schools with Lakewood

Sherrill’s School District Consolidation Plan Draws Sharp Criticism

TOMS RIVER, N.J. — Toms River, Brick and Jackson could be forced to consolidate school districts under Governor Mikie Sherrill’s new proposal. Sunday night, Sherrill unveiled her plan to force school districts across New Jersey to consolidate, a move that would make conditions much worse for many school districts in northern Ocean County.

One such move could see Jackson, Toms River, Brick and other Ocean County municipalities involved in a countywide forced merger under Governor Mikie Sherrill.

Mikie Sherrill Says Merge Toms River, Jackson, and Brick Schools with Lakewood
Bus services in Ocean County would also be regionalized, including the Lakewood Student Transportation Authority (LSTA)

Sherrill said her plan to drive down the costs of education means eliminating districts such as Jackson, Toms River, Brick and Lakewood, and merging them together, creating would could be called the Greater Lakewood Regional School District.

While Sherrill did not specifically mention towns by name, she repeatedly said that countywide consolidation would be mandated, meaning taxpayers in Lacey, Toms River, Jackson, Berkeley and others would be communally funding districts like Lakewood.

In other parts of the state, an Essex County consolidation would see towns like Bloomfield and Belleville merging with Newark.

For residents of those towns currently being forced to sell schools, cut programs and fire teachers under Governor Phil Murphy, that is an apocalyptic scenario.

In reality, the move is nothing more than an NJEA-sponsored power play to consolidate legislative powers and to concentrate school board powers in larger domains so the union will have an easier time controlling curriculum, policy, and worker contracts. There would be fewer bargaining units.

Governor Murphy and my colleagues have not been supportive of my bill. Both parties have failed on this and continue to. Happy to finally see a gubernatorial candidate support this @MikieSherrill

https://t.co/KmMVsnTrT5

— Vin Gopal (@vingopal) September 22, 2025

Mikie Sherrill, on Sunday, showed her cards, and it appears she’s holding a couple of jokers. One of those jokers is New Jersey State Senator Vin Vopal who took immediately to social media to cheer on Sherrill’s radical plan.

The other is the NJEA.

One person not buying the plan was Jack Ciattarelli.

Mikie Sherrill Says Merge Toms River, Jackson, and Brick Schools with Lakewood
New Jersey Democrat State Senator Vin Gopal meets with constituents in Lakewood Township, including Democrat assemblyman Avi Schnall. File Photo. Agudath Israel of America.

Jack Ciattarelli said what makes New Jersey great is the idea of “home rule,” where each town will decide its own fate and operate its own school district.

Ciattarelli said while there could be some cost savings in consolidation, he was adamant that if any school districts wanted to consolidate, under home rule, it is up to those districts to chart their path, not Trenton.

He said he would not force any districts to consolidate, as Sherrill said she would.

Worse, in Ocean County, where the Democrats’ flawed funding formula has decimated schools in Toms River and Jackson, those districts could be forced to merge with a district like Lakewood, where private schools and flawed funding have driven up costs to the point where the district is in extreme dire financial straits.

It’s not just Sherrill that wants this. Vin Gopal, a prominent Murphy-aligned Democrat at the Jersey Shore, is now acting as Sherrill’s wingman in the forced consolidation.

“Jack Ciattrelli is 100% wrong on not mandating consolidation and shared services of government agencies—New Jersey has too much government. We need compulsory consolidation. Another area Mikie Sherrill is 100% right on. 565 towns and 600 school districts. We need mandatory shared services to lower costs for NJ residents,” Gopal said.

Gopal is the chairman of the powerful Senate Education Committee in New Jersey and serves as a political henchman, paid for by the NJEA.

Gopal has sat idly as districts across the Jersey Shore sell schools, cut teachers, consolidate, and downsize, while districts like Newark continue to get more funding, new schools, and hundred-thousand-dollar parties, despite being among the lowest ranked districts in New Jersey.

Gopal has ignored multiple requests from towns like Jackson and Toms River to help them through the current S2 funding crisis in the region.

The consolidation of school districts would further entrench the NJEA power base for a complete takeover of the state’s educational system. With the NJEA calling the shots, it could drop New Jersey from 12th to even lower in the national rankings.

Ciattarelli pointed out that it was a bad idea. Under decades of Democrat control, New Jersey has gone from America’s second-best education system to 12th.

He was skeptical of the plan announced at Sunday’s debate by Sherrill and immediately rejected it, saying instead he will fix the broken school funding formula and raise the educational bar to bring New Jersey back to the top of the educational stack in the U.S.

Mikie Sherrill will keep New Jersey as a sanctuary state to protect illegal aliens from Trump administration

Ciattarelli, Sherrill clash over sanctuary policies in fiery New Jersey debate

TRENTON, N.J. – Immigration policy took center stage Sunday night as gubernatorial candidates Jack Ciattarelli and Mikie Sherrill sparred over New Jersey’s “sanctuary state” stance and the Immigrant Trust Directive enacted under Gov. Phil Murphy.

Sherrill, a Democrat and former federal prosecutor (for 11 months), said she would maintain Murphy’s directive — which limits cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities — arguing that the Trump administration violated the rights of undocumented immigrants.

As 600,000 undocumented residents live in New Jersey, and Sherrill said her position does not shield individuals who commit crimes.

But Republican candidate Ciattarelli quickly countered, saying Sherrill’s one year as a prosecutor was marked by plea deals on serious cases and questioned her claim of toughness on crime. He pledged that his first executive order as governor would be to rescind sanctuary state policies.

The exchange underscored a stark policy divide between the candidates in a state with one of the largest undocumented immigrant populations in the nation. While Sherrill framed her stance as protecting immigrant communities and civil rights, Ciattarelli argued that ending sanctuary policies is essential to restoring law and order in the state.

Key Points

  • Mikie Sherrill pledged to keep New Jersey’s sanctuary state policies and Immigrant Trust Directive.
  • Jack Ciattarelli said his first executive order would end those policies.
  • Immigration highlighted sharp differences between the two in Sunday night’s gubernatorial debate.

TOMS RIVER, N.J. – A Jackson Township man accused of fatally shooting a 28-year-old woman earlier this month will remain behind bars until trial after consenting to detention in Ocean County Jail, prosecutors announced.

Shaquille Green, 29, appeared September 18 before retired Superior Court Judge Wendel E. Daniels, temporarily assigned on recall, and agreed to remain detained while awaiting trial. Jack Ciattarelli Leaves Mikie Sherrill Speechless After Congresswoman’s Mic Drop Moment Backfires

by Shore News Network September 22, 2025
By Shore News Network

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – A heated exchange over personal finances and ethics left Rep. Mikie Sherrill momentarily speechless during Sunday night’s New Jersey gubernatorial debate, as Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli once again noted she is profiting from her time in Congress through questionable stock trades.

Trump-endorsed Jack Ciattarelli is cooking Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill in the NJ Gubernatorial debate:

“In the 7 years that she’s been in Congress, she’s tripled her net worth… While you were sitting on the House Armed Services Committee, you were trading defense stocks.” pic.twitter.com/hMPwssPWTq

— johnny maga (@_johnnymaga) September 22, 2025

Sherrill thought she had a mic drop moment when she said, “It doesn’t matter because I’m going to make sure that he doesn’t get to serve again when I win for governor in November of this year.”

Ciattarelli, a former state assemblyman, told the audience that Sherrill had tripled her net worth during her seven years in Washington.

He charged that she violated federal stock reporting laws and pointed to a report alleging she traded defense stocks while serving on the House Armed Services Committee.

That’s where the tables turned on the Virginia native, Sherrill.

“There’s a big difference between her public service and mine,” Ciattarelli said. “It cost me money, the time I put in, and it took me away from my company. In the seven years she’s been in Congress, she’s tripled her net worth. She broke the law. She had to pay fines for violating federal law on stock trades and stock reporting. And while sitting on the Armed Services Committee, she was trading defense stocks.”

The New York Times has confirmed Ciattarelli’s allegations. Sherrill was found guilty of improperly trading stocks while in Congress. A 2022 New York Times report identified Representative Mikie Sherrill and dozens of other lawmakers who failed to disclose stock trades as required by law properly. Sherrill has faced scrutiny and political attacks regarding fines received for late disclosure and the increase in her family’s net worth while in office, allegedly through sitting on committees with advanced intelligence on financial decisions by the federal government.

The back-and-forth capped an already tense debate that featured clashes over immigration, the state Motor Vehicle Commission, and New Jersey’s sanctuary policies. Ciattarelli repeatedly framed himself as a candidate who lost money serving the public, while portraying Sherrill as a career politician who benefited financially from her office.

The stock-trade allegations, which have dogged several members of Congress in recent years, underscored Ciattarelli’s strategy of focusing on ethics and accountability. Sherrill’s campaign has rejected claims of wrongdoing, saying her financial disclosures comply with federal law.

Key Points

  • Jack Ciattarelli highlighted Mikie Sherrill tripling her net worth in Congress and trading defense stocks while on the Armed Services Committee.
  • Sherrill, briefly left speechless, later vowed to defeat Ciattarelli in November’s gubernatorial race.
  • Debate featured clashes on immigration, motor vehicle services, and ethics in public service.

Ciattarelli’s attack line landed hard, leaving Sherrill fighting to shift the spotlight back to policy.

Ciattarelli says Motor Vehicle workers will return to work if he is elected

by Shore News Network September 21, 2025
By Shore News Network

TRENTON, N.J. – Motor Vehicle Commission operations became a flashpoint in the governor’s race as Jack Ciattarelli and Mikie Sherrill clashed over whether in-person services should return to pre-pandemic levels.

Many of the state’s MVC employees are tele-commuting, working from home since COVID-19 shut down centers statewide.

They are still working from home, and the service quality of the MVC has gone from bad to worse since.

Ciattarelli said that if elected, MVC workers will be back in customer service centers full-time, ending the heavy reliance on online scheduling and long appointment backlogs.

He pointed to Florida as an example, where residents can walk in without an appointment and leave the same day with a Real ID. By contrast, he said, New Jerseyans are forced to book appointments months in advance.

“The MVC should get back to work in the office, and I’ll make sure service levels increase,” Ciattarelli told voters.

Sherrill, however, suggested the current hybrid system is functioning, with most services now offered online. She said residents should not need to make unnecessary trips to MVC offices to obtain IDs or handle routine transactions. At the same time, she acknowledged that improvements are still needed to ease wait times and streamline the system.

The exchange highlighted a fundamental difference in approach: Ciattarelli pushing for a full-scale return to in-person service, and Sherrill leaning toward refining the digital-first model.

Key Points

  • Jack Ciattarelli pledged to return MVC workers to in-person offices and eliminate months-long waits.
  • Mikie Sherrill defended the expanded online system but admitted improvements are needed.
  • The debate reflects contrasting visions of how New Jersey residents should access motor vehicle services.

Texas man charged with terroristic threats against NYC mayoral candidate Mamdani

by Shore News Network September 21, 2025
By Shore News Network

QUEENS, N.Y. – A Texas man has been indicted on charges of making terroristic threats as a hate crime after a series of threatening, anti-Muslim messages were sent to New York State Assemblyman and mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, prosecutors announced.

Jeremy Fistel, 44, of Plano, Texas, was arraigned Thursday on a 22-count indictment charging him with four counts of making a terroristic threat as a hate crime, four counts of making a terroristic threat, seven counts of aggravated harassment in the second degree as a hate crime and seven counts of aggravated harassment in the second degree.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said Fistel began leaving violent and threatening messages for Mamdani’s office in June, escalating through July. According to prosecutors, the messages included threats to shoot the assemblyman, harm his family and references to his Ugandan and Muslim background. On July 8, Fistel allegedly submitted a written message through Mamdani’s website calling for his death and expressing hopes that his wife and children would be murdered.

Fistel was arrested in Texas on September 11 and extradited to Queens on September 17. He was arraigned the following day before Queens Supreme Court Justice Michelle A. Johnson, who ordered him to return to court on November 19. If convicted of the top charge, he faces up to 15 years in prison.

DA Katz said that, according to the charges and investigation, on June 11, at approximately 11:27 a.m., Fistel allegedly left a message on Mamdani’s office voicemail saying, in part, “Hey Zohran, you should go back to fcking Uganda before someone shoots you in the fcking head and gets rid of your whole fcking family, too. You piece of sht Muslims don’t belong here.” On June 18, at approximately 9:45 a.m., Fistel allegedly left a message saying that Mamdani was not welcome in New York, or in America and to “Go on and start your car. See what happens…yeah, keep an eye on your house and your family. Watch your fcking back every fcking second til you get the fck out of America.” The message also said, “And check your beeper, too, terrorist fck. Beep beep.” On July 8, Fistel allegedly submitted a written message through the assembly member’s website, saying “I hope you get terminal cancer and die a painful death very soon. I’d love to see an IDF bullet go through your skull. Would be even better if you had to watch your wife and kids murdered in front you before they end your pathetic miserable life…I hope you all die painful sudden deaths. Do us all a favor and kill yourself.” On July 23, at approximately 1:47 p.m., Fistel allegedly left a voicemail message saying Mamdani and his family deserved to die and that “Fcking terrorist piece of sht. All you and your Muslim fck loser friends and relatives and family and wife and kids deserve to die. You deserve to be six feet under the fcking ground. I hope somebody does it quickly, somebody shoots you in the f*cking face…I hope you get raped and murdered as well.”

The investigation tied the threatening voicemails to Fistel’s cellphone and the written message to his email account. Authorities said he had attempted to block his caller identification during the calls.

The case was investigated by the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force, with assistance from the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service.

Key Points

  • Jeremy Fistel of Plano, Texas indicted for threats against Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani.
  • Messages included violent anti-Muslim statements and death threats toward Mamdani and his family.
  • Defendant faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted; next court date is November 19.
