PATERSON, N.J. — A city park is undergoing a full-scale transformation as part of what officials are calling a “park renaissance” in Paterson’s 4th Ward.

Mayor Andre Sayegh announced the redevelopment of Vera Ames Park this week, highlighting a series of additions aimed at enhancing the public space for families and residents. Planned improvements include a new playground, splash pad, pavilion, community garden, and updated basketball courts.

The park, located in one of the city’s most densely populated neighborhoods, has been named after Vera Ames, a living community leader known locally for her decades of civic involvement. The upgrades are part of a broader initiative to improve quality-of-life infrastructure across Paterson.

“A MAJOR UPGRADE!” Mayor Sayegh posted on social media. “This particular park in the 4th Ward named after the living legend, Vera Ames, is shaping up to be one of the best public spaces in the state.”

Construction timelines have not yet been released, but the city indicated that work is already underway and the upgrades are expected to be completed in phases.

Citywide improvements aimed at increasing access to recreation

City officials have recently prioritized recreation space improvements, citing the importance of accessible outdoor amenities in urban areas. The Vera Ames Park project follows several similar efforts to refurbish aging parks in various wards across Paterson.
