Fatal train incident under investigation near Handshake City Tuesday night

Utica, NY – Emergency crews responded to a fatal incident Tuesday night after a person was struck by a train near a set of railroad tracks off Whitesboro Street. The scene, located near the Handshake City area, quickly became the focus of a multi-agency investigation. Police and fire units were dispatched at approximately 8:00 p.m. following reports of a train striking an individual. Upon arrival, responders confirmed the victim had died at the scene.

Investigation underway with CSX Railroad

“At approximately 8:00PM Utica Police and Utica Fire units were dispatched to the railroad tracks off of Whitesboro St near Handshake City regarding a train striking an individual,” the Utica Police Department said.

Authorities are now working alongside CSX Railroad to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The identity of the individual has not been released. “The Utica Police Department is currently on scene conducting an investigation in conjunction with CSX Railroad,” the department said.

Victim pronounced dead at scene

Officials confirmed there were no lifesaving measures possible due to the severity of the incident.

“The individual who was struck was immediately declared deceased,” police stated.
