Police Find His Mother Shot While Arresting Man Wanted for Layhill Murder

LAYHILL, MD – Manuel Alejandro Ayala, 23, of Layhill, has been arrested and charged in connection to a homicide and shootings that occurred on Monday, September 4.

At 7:54 p.m., 4th District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to a report of a shooting in the 14200 block of Punch St.

An adult male was found in the street with a gunshot wound and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers also discovered 65-year-old Rosa Maria Benitez-Ozuna, also of Layhill, deceased inside a nearby home.

The suspect’s mother was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

Ayala, a resident of the home, was identified as the suspect and was taken into custody without incident. He has been charged with first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and multiple firearm-related charges. He is awaiting a bond hearing.
