Police seek shooter after toddler fatally struck in DC

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A 3-year-old girl struck by gunfire early Saturday while sitting in a parked vehicle has died, and the Metropolitan Police Department is now investigating the shooting as a homicide.

Officers responded around 3:03 a.m. on July 5 to the 1000 block of 14th Street, Southeast, where they found the child with a gunshot wound to the upper body. She was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

The victim, identified as Honesty Cheadle of Southeast D.C., succumbed to her injuries on Monday.

Investigators believe at least one suspect opened fire on the block, hitting a parked vehicle in which Cheadle was seated with family members.

The case is being handled by MPD’s Major Case squad. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
