Popular brooklyn restaurant "new corner" shuts doors after 80 years

TOMS RIVER, NJ – Although Ocean County seems a world away from Brooklyn in New York City, the words “New Cawn-uh’s” can be heard during backyard barbecues, front lawns and restaurants around the county on any given day. For many New Yorkers living in Ocean County, New Corner is the gold standard of Italian food to compare all local Italian restaurants to, but of course, there’s no comparison.

There’s not much Americans can agree upon these days, but for the tens of thousands of Brooklyn and Staten Island transplants now living at the Jersey Shore, New Corner was one thing most people agreed on.

“After much deliberation, sadness, and a heavy heart, I decided – after 84 years of business – to officially announce that I will not be reopening Colandrea New Corner Restaurant,” owner Vincent Colandrea said in a statement. “First and foremost, I want to thank all of you – countless customers, loyal patrons, dedicated staff, collaborative partners, long-time purveyors, and sincere friends that have become our extended family – for the heartfelt memories you contributed to Colandrea New Corner Restaurant’s 84-year history. We are absolutely honored to have served three generations of family, friends and our community.”

The restaurant was featured in the 2019 Robert DiNero movie, the Irishman.
