Professional basketball comes to the jersey shore

BELMAR, NJ – Professional basketball is returning to the Jersey Shore as the Jersey Shore Breaks officially join the revived United States Basketball League (USBL), the organization announced Thursday.

The Breaks will compete in the 2026 USBL season, marking the league’s national relaunch after more than a decade-long hiatus. Games are scheduled to begin in March, ushering in a new era of spring basketball for fans across the country.

The USBL, historically known as “The League of Opportunity,” will feature at least 15 teams in its comeback season, including the Baltimore Rhythm, Seattle Super Hawks, San Diego Sharks, Reading Rebels, and Virginia Valley Vipers.

League’s revival restores spring basketball tradition

Founded in 1985 by Daniel Meisenheimer, the USBL built its reputation as a launching pad for players aspiring to reach the NBA. More than 150 alumni advanced to the professional ranks, including Muggsy Bogues, Manute Bol, Spud Webb, and Anthony Mason.

After ceasing operations in 2008, the league’s return brings renewed focus on community involvement, player development, and affordable, family-oriented entertainment.

The Jersey Shore Breaks will host their home games in Belmar, offering fans live, high-energy basketball just steps from the oceanfront.

Leaders celebrate league’s comeback

“Today marks a huge moment for our community and for the game we love,” said Erik Gaines, community liaison and partner for the Jersey Shore Breaks. “We’re honored to bring professional basketball back home — and to be part of something that gives players and fans a reason to get excited every spring.”

USBL Commissioner Dennis Truax said the 2026 relaunch is rooted in the same spirit that defined the league’s legacy. “The USBL has always been about opening doors — for players, coaches, and entire communities,” he said.

Executive Director Ingrid Hutt added that the new season will blend opportunity with entertainment. “Our goal is simple: to create unforgettable game-night experiences. With strong teams like the Jersey Shore Breaks leading the charge, the USBL’s future looks brighter than ever.”
