U.S. Border Patrol agents captured a Richmond Hill man trying to smuggle three Burmese pythons into the United States through a border crossing in Champlain.

Calvin Bautista, age 36, was arraigned today on an indictment by the Department of Justice charging him with smuggling.

United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman alleges Bautista smuggled the snakes in his pants as he rode on a bus that crossed the U.S.-Canadian border.

According to Freedman, Bautista now faces up to a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release.
