Rain washes out Schenectady’s Scare-nectady parade

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A beloved Halloween tradition in the Electric City has been called off just days before it was set to begin.

The Schenectady Police Department announced Tuesday that this year’s Scare-nectady Haunted Patrol parade will not go on as planned.

Officials cited forecasts of heavy rain, cold temperatures, and strong winds expected Thursday evening as the reason for the cancellation.

Key Points

  • Schenectady’s annual Scare-nectady Haunted Patrol parade has been cancelled due to predicted severe weather.
  • Police said heavy rain and wind would make conditions unsafe for participants and spectators.
  • The department will instead offer trick-or-treating at the police station on Thursday evening and Friday.

Weather concerns end long-standing tradition

The department said the combination of wet, windy, and dark conditions would create unsafe circumstances for parade-goers and participants alike. The decision was made after closely monitoring weather forecasts through the week. Each year, the Scare-nectady Haunted Patrol draws more than 1,000 people to the downtown area, featuring police vehicles, community groups, and local businesses decked out in Halloween themes.

Police station opens doors for trick-or-treaters

Despite the disappointment, officers are still offering a safe Halloween option. On Thursday evening and Friday, the Schenectady Police Department will welcome local children to stop by their station for candy. The department thanked residents, volunteers, and partner agencies for their support and said they look forward to reviving the haunted parade next year.
