Remembering Officer Thomas Worthington: A Tragic Loss in 1909 Blizzard

BALTIMORE, MD — The Baltimore Police Department commemorated the valor of Police Officer Thomas Worthington, who tragically lost his life on March 4, 1909.

A live wire electrocuted Officer Worthington during a severe blizzard that wreaked havoc across Baltimore, causing widespread damage to power and telegraph lines.

While patrolling his beat, Officer Worthington encountered a downed wire at the intersection of McMechen Street and Mount Royal Avenue. In a fateful moment, as he attempted to remove what he believed was a deactivated wire, a live wire fell, striking him and resulting in his immediate death.

Officer Worthington’s dedication to his duty was evident through his 12 years of service with the Baltimore Police Department. His sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily. The Baltimore Police Department vows to never forget his service and sacrifice in a remembrance post on social media on Monday.
