A resident of Jackson, New Jersey is upset after township code enforcement officers issued what is suspected to be hundreds of violation notices to residents who placed basketball hoops on the curbsides of the township.
According to violation notices, township code enforcers threatened residents with jail time and fines of up to $2,000 if their hoops were not removed.
I am concerned about the slew of violations that were issued in Jackson the past few weeks to homeowners who have basketball hoops and hockey nets on the side of their street, and a new ordinance the Township Council is considering that would ban such things in the township.
Jackson is a beautiful residential neighborhood where children play basketball and hockey all the time. It is a good, clean healthy outlet.
I do not understand why the town is suddenly punishing residents for providing their children with healthy outlets. I saw one violation notice that said violators could get up to a $1,000 fine. A $1,000 fine for a moveable basketball hoop?
I hope the council members and the mayor will reconsider this new ordinance.
