Baltimore retiree stuns himself with $150K scratch-off win before doctor visit
BALTIMORE, MD — A recently retired Baltimore man had his morning routine upended when a simple detour to a Catonsville convenience store left him holding a winning lottery ticket worth $150,000.
The unexpected windfall occurred on Saturday when the former state employee, early for a medical appointment, stopped for breakfast and ended up at the Soda Pop Shop on Ingleside Avenue. With time to spare, he picked up two $10 More Money scratch-off tickets and scanned them at the store.
The second ticket revealed a top prize of $150,000, leaving him stunned and unable to process the moment. Overwhelmed, he skipped breakfast and postponed his medical appointment. He immediately contacted his son and fiancée to share the news before preparing to claim the prize.
He officially claimed the winnings on Tuesday at Maryland Lottery headquarters, opting to add the funds to his retirement savings. The man had retired in September and described the win as perfectly timed.
The retailer, Soda Pop Shop, will receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
The More Money scratch-off, which launched nearly a year ago, still has two $150,000 top prizes remaining, along with thirteen $10,000 prizes and numerous smaller prizes ranging from $10 to $5,000.
