Sanitation worker finds wanted fugitive hiding inside garbage can in Huber Heights

HUBER HEIGHTS, OH – In a bizarre twist of luck and timing, a wanted fugitive’s escape attempt came to an end Monday morning when a trash collector discovered him hiding inside a garbage can — earning the suspect the nickname “Oscar the Grouch” from amused officers of the Huber Heights Police Department.

Key Points

  • A driver fled a traffic stop and hid inside a trash can to avoid capture.
  • A trash collector spotted the man and alerted police.
  • Officers quickly arrested the suspect without injury.

Fugitive’s hiding spot leads to quick arrest

According to Huber Heights Police, Officer Tyree had initiated a routine traffic stop earlier in the morning when the driver bolted from the vehicle on foot. After briefly losing sight of the suspect, officers set up a perimeter around the area.

That’s when a local sanitation worker, making his usual morning rounds, discovered something unusual inside one of the neighborhood trash cans — the fugitive himself. Police humorously dubbed the man “Oscar the Grouch” in reference to the Sesame Street character known for living in a garbage can.

Officers credit teamwork and quick response

Officer Perez, who responded to the scene, apprehended the suspect swiftly and without injury. Police said the coordination between officers and the quick-thinking trash collector led to the man’s safe capture.

The suspect’s identity and charges have not yet been released pending further investigation. Authorities praised the sanitation worker for his alertness and cooperation.
