Schenectady Police Thwart Attempted Robbery at Stewart’s

SCHENECTADY, NY – On Friday, Schenectady Police Department officers responded to a panic alarm at Stewarts, 1010 McClellan St.

 The alert was due to a male attempting to steal a cash register. A vehicle description linked him to several other incidents that occurred earlier in the day.

With coordination from the Capital Region Crime Analysis Center, police tracked and located the suspect’s vehicle.

The pursuit ended when the suspect crashed into a vacant house on Summit Ave and attempted to flee on foot. He was apprehended with minor injuries behind a house, aided by the Schenectady County Task Force.

Scott A. Vanbergen, 39, from Saratoga County, faces multiple charges including Attempted Robbery, Unlawful Fleeing, Resisting Arrest, and Driving while Ability Impaired. Investigations into his involvement in other burglaries and larcenies within Schenectady and surrounding areas are ongoing.
