Seal pup shuts down Long Beach Boulevard after waddling into traffic
HARVEY CEDARS, NJ – Morning traffic on Long Beach Boulevard came to a halt Tuesday after a young gray seal was found resting in the middle of the roadway, prompting police to block off streets until rescue crews arrived.
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center received a call February 24 from the Harvey Cedars Police Department reporting a seal in the roadway. Officers and members of the Harvey Cedars Department of Public Works stopped traffic as the female gray seal pup made her way toward Middlesex Avenue.
Authorities closed the road while the seal stopped and rested in the middle of the block.
The Stranding Center’s team responded and transported the pup to its hospital for a medical evaluation. Officials said the seal had no visible injuries but was in thin overall body condition.
She is currently being monitored and resting in Pen 2 of the facility’s Pool House. Additional photos are expected to be released after the animal has time to recover from the incident.
Police credited Patrolman Daniel Grundtisch and the Harvey Cedars Department of Public Works with keeping the animal safe until rescue personnel arrived.
