SECAUCUS, N.J. — Authorities in Secaucus are investigating multiple incidents of tampered mailboxes across the township, with reports indicating that unknown individuals have applied sticky substances to mail slots, the Secaucus Police Department announced Saturday.
Police are urging residents to use caution when utilizing public mailboxes and to report any suspicious activity or signs of tampering immediately. “If you encounter any mailboxes that have been tampered with, please report the location to us as soon as possible,” the department said in a statement shared on social media.
The tampering appears to involve the application of adhesive substances to mailbox slots, potentially intended to interfere with mail deposits. Authorities have not disclosed how many mailboxes have been affected or whether the incidents are connected.
Residents are advised to inspect mailboxes carefully before use and to consider mailing sensitive documents from inside post offices or secure locations until the issue is resolved.
The Secaucus Police Department is actively investigating the matter and encourages anyone with information to come forward.
Mail tampering cases are a federal offense and are typically referred to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service for further investigation.
